64% of Simhachalam temple redevelopment works are completed so far, says Endowments Minister
Simhachalam temple redevelopment works are being carried out under the supervision of both the Tourism and the Endowment Departments, and about 64% works were completed so far, said Andhra Pradesh Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy while expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of lives of seven devotees in the wall collapse incident.
Addressing media at his home at Santhapeta in Nellore on Wednesday, he said, 'On the occasion of Chandanotsavam, temple darshan began from 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Due to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, the rainwater flowed down from the hills causing the collapse of the newly-built wall. Immediate relief efforts have been initiated at the scene.'
PRASHAD scheme
The Union government is providing financial assistance to the State government for the development of famous temples at Simhachalam, Annavaram, Srisailam and Vijayawada under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme. The Union Ministry of Tourism had sanctioned ₹58.04 crore for the development at Simhachalam in 2022-23.
'The development works worth ₹31 crore have been completed at Simhachalam, however, the bills for ₹14 crore were paid till now. The works were going on at a slow pace due to delay in payments from the Centre. We have not yet inspected the quality of the ongoing works to ascertain the reason behind the wall collapse incident,' Mr. Ramanarayana Reddy told The Hindu.
Three-member committee
'The government has constituted a three-member committee, headed by Special Chief Secretary Suresh Kumar, to probe the wall collapse incident and further action will be taken based on the investigation report. The investigation committee includes an Inspector General and an Engineer-in-Chief,' he informed.
The Minister further said, 'As Chandanotsavam has been recognised as a government festival, Revenue Minister, Home Minister and I, as well as former Union Minister and Temple Trustee P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, have been supervising the arrangements for almost two months. Except for this unfortunate incident, everything went smoothly at the annual event.'
Better treatment
Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased persons, Visakhapatnam District In-charge Minister Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy said, 'We are providing better treatment to the injured. Although the authorities have been working hard for months, this incident happened due to untimely rain. The government will take steps to ensure such incidents do not recur.'

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has said that Sunday's tragic bridge collapse in Pune's Maval tehsil to structural failure caused by rust and excessive crowding. Speaking to reporters after the incident, Pawar said, 'We have received various versions of the incident. As per the preliminary information, the bridge was old and rusted. Many people were standing on the bridge when it collapsed.' The incident occurred around 3.30 PM in the Kundamala area, a popular picnic spot on the Indrayani River, which had been swollen due to days of heavy rainfall. While it wasn't raining at the time, at least 100 picnickers were reportedly present on the old iron bridge when it gave way. Four people have been killed and at least 18 people were seriously injured in the collapse. Search teams are still looking for at least three individuals, including a child, believed to be trapped under the collapsed structure. Bridge condition, overcrowding and ignored warnings under scrutiny The collapsed bridge, described as a pedestrian-only structure, had a warning board barring the entry of two-wheelers. Maharashtra Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, who reached the spot to oversee rescue efforts, said the bridge caved in under the weight of a large crowd. "The bridge was meant only for pedestrians. It seems people on the bridge did not pay heed to the instructions, which caused the incident," Mahajan said. He announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and confirmed that cranes were being used to remove the debris. District officials confirmed that three hospitals are currently treating the injured. A probe has also been ordered into the lack of police presence despite the area's popularity during the monsoon season. Union home minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and were briefed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the ongoing relief work. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with local police and fire departments, are continuing their efforts to locate the missing.

Rehearsal held ahead of International Yoga Day to be celebrated on June 21
Hundreds of yoga practitioners took part in the rehearsal on the Mysuru palace premises on Sunday ahead of the main event of International Day of Yoga to be held on June 21 at the same venue. Braving the inclement weather and intermittent drizzle, the rehearsal followed the standard protocol issued by the Union government. Nearly 3,000 persons cutting across all age groups participated in the reheasal, which was held from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The event was organised by the district administration and Mysuru Zilla Panchayat in association with the Department of Ayush. The district administration has set a target of drawing 15,000 participants for the Yoga Day event on June 21 and preparations by way of practice, publicity, and other yoga-related events are being held since June 1. The authorities had chalked out a 21-day plan in the run-up to the main event, and these are being held as per schedule, according to officials. The curtain raiser was held on June 1 at Lalitha Mahal Palace grounds and was followed by various promotional events, including Yoga Dhanush and Yoga Unplugged, with performance at various institutions to create greater interest in public in taking part in the Yoga Day event on June 21. The district administration has joined hands with various associations including the Mysuru Yoga Federation, JSS Institutions, yoga organisations in the city for the smooth conduct of this year's event. While the main yoga day event will be held at the palace, various institutions and organisations will conduct the event and perform yoga as per the standard protocol issued by the government. Incidentally, the Mysuru palace was the venue for the lead Yoga Day celebrations in 2022 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. In the days ahead, there will be a slew of publicity and demonstration of yoga in various schools and colleges so that more youngsters are drawn to the practice of yoga and incorporate it as part of their lifestyle.
