Woman's 10 mortgages 'laundered illegal tobacco funds'

Yahoo28-02-2025

A woman has been charged over an alleged multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud to launder funds on behalf of a crime gang selling black market tobacco.
Xiaoli Xue, 36, has been accused of fraudulently inflating her income to secure 10 home loans worth almost $7 million since 2020.
She then allegedly laundered funds from organised criminals in the illegal tobacco trade via the repayments.
Following her arrest at Berala in the city's west, police raided two properties, seizing $2.5 million worth of cigarettes as well as loose tobacco, more than $100,000 in cash and a luxury SUV.
An illegal gambling den and an unlicensed tattoo parlour believed to be linked to the organised crime group were also uncovered, police said.
NSW Police Financial Crimes Squad Commander Gordon Arbinja said the use of fraudulent mortgages showed the lengths organised criminals would go to conceal their activities.
"We will not tolerate criminals who undermine the integrity of our financial system," he said.
Xue was granted bail in Burwood Local Court on Friday after being charged with charged with 20 fraud and criminal proceeds offences.
She will have to hand over passports and report to police daily, while $100,000 will need to be deposited to secure her release.
Xue is due to face court again on April 30.
The seized assets have been frozen and the state of NSW will attempt to claw back the alleged criminal proceeds.
The arrest comes after an investigation into seven properties spanning more than six months.
In November, state police revealed there had been a string of attacks on tobacconists in northern NSW, sparking fears Victoria's cut-throat turf war over the illicit cigarette and vape trade had spilled across the border.
More than 100 arson incidents in the southern state have been linked to Middle Eastern organised crime syndicates and outlaw motorcycle gangs fighting to control the black market.

'We should be disgusted by our lack of action and stop arms sales to Israel'

Protesters gathered outside an MP's office this morning (May 30) to call for an end to UK arms sales to Israel. The group gathered outside Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi's office on St George's Road in Bolton town centre. This comes as more than 300 actors, musicians, activists and others used an open letter to call on the Prime Minister to 'take immediate action to end the UK's complicity in the horrors of Gaza'. Eileen Murphy, at the Bolton protest, said: "We're here to lobby MPs to stop arms sales to Israel as they are killing innocent children. The UK government also suspended trade talks with the Middle Eastern nation over its conduct in a war that has seen more than 50,000 Palestinian civilians die since Hamas' assault on October 7, 2023, killed 736 Israelis.

Former NYPD Commissione Bernie Kerik dead at 69

Ex-NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik, whose career included White House stints under President Trump and former President George W. Bush, died Thursday after being hospitalized with cardiac illness. He was 69. Kerik's high-profile career was peppered with both success and controversy. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on Sept. 4, 1955, he served in the US Army before joining the NYPD in 1986. Former NYPD Commissioner and national security expert Bernie Kerik has died at age 69. FREELANCE In 1994, he left the force and joined the Department of Corrections, being named its commissioner four years later by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also tapped him as the city's top cop in 2000. Kerik was at the helm of the NYPD and received wide praise for deploying cops during the department's response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that downed the Twin Towers, earning the nickname 'America's Cop.' In 2003, following the US invasion of Iraq, then-President George W. Bush named Kerik to head up a provisional police force in the post-war Middle Eastern nation. The former top cop later founded Kerik Group, a private crisis and risk management consulting firm. Kerik was hospitalized with an unnamed cardiac illness before his death on Thursday. FREELANCE Bush nominated Kerik to head the US Department of Homeland Security in 2004, but the ex-commissioner withdrew his nomination while admitting he had employed an illegal immigrant as a nanny — which led to his guilty plea to ethics violations in the Bronx in 2006. His legal troubles worsened in 2009, when he pleaded guilty to eight federal felonies, including charges that he evaded taxes on a $255,000 gift for home repairs and made false statements to federal officials while being considered for the Homeland Security post. Kerik served four years in federal prison before he was pardoned by Trump in 2020 during his first term in the White House. More recently, Kerik was grilled by Congress during hearings stemming from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and was subpoenaed to disclose privileged Trump administration documents reportedly linked to the investigation. He is survived by his wife, Hala Matil Kerik, and three children, including a son with ex-wife Jacqueline Llerena.

2 additional jewelry scams reported on the same day in Tukwila

The Tukwila Police Department is reminding the public to be vigilant after two additional cases of a specific jewelry theft were reported. Earlier this month, police in Tukwila and Kent put out warnings for a series of robberies, particularly targeting members of the Asian community. According to police, most of the incidents happened outside of Kent, but they were still close enough to have the department put folks on alert. During the crimes, the suspects have approached victims in a seemingly friendly manner. They often engage in small talk, ask for directions, or offer gifts such as money or jewelry, Kent PD said. According to police, in some cases, suspects have asked to pray with the victim, during which they may place fake jewelry or a towel around the victim's neck. 'They discreetly and forcibly remove the victim's real jewelry, sometimes without the victim noticing until later. In more serious cases, suspects have threatened or used violence, including the display of knives,' Kent PD wrote. The suspects are described as both a man and a woman, often appearing to be of Middle Eastern descent and estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old. Kent Police say these incidents have been reported at the Great Wall Shopping Mall and the Hong Kong Market in Burien. These two recent incidents happened on Wednesday near S 180th Street in Tukwila. What You Can Do to Stay Safe: Be aware of your surroundings at all times Shop with a friend or family member, especially in locations where incidents have occurred Avoid wearing visible or expensive jewelry in public, particularly in the areas mentioned above. Report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement immediately. If you have any information about these incidents, contact the Kent Police Department KPDTipLine@ OR call our tip line @ 253-856-5808. If you have been a victim of this crime in the past and have not made a report, call 911 OR the non-emergency police dispatch line 253-852-2121.
