How a San Francisco record label is amplifying Cambodian voices

Before performing a ballad dedicated to his late mother, Cambodian rapper and singer Norith warned the sold-out crowd gathered at Asian Art Museum's Samsung Hall that his emotions might get the best of him.
'It's my first time performing this live,' he said.
The audience on this recent weekend held its breath. Over a spare backbeat with sampled and live instrumentation, Norith elegantly peeled back layers of vulnerability in his native Khmer language, sharing the loneliness he and his father feel, and the love and belief his mom bestowed upon him. His song shares the same title and sentiment as 2Pac's 'Dear Mama,' though sung in a different language from across the ocean.
Norith made it through without breaking. The heavily Cambodian American audience gathered in Samsung Hall on Saturday, July 19, for this one-of-a-kind performance, however, was visibly moved. Many dabbed the corners of their eyes while witnessing his mournful tribute.
The emotional song was just one of the featured 'unplugged' performances by five Cambodian artists dominating the present and shaping the future of Khmer music. Along with Norith, there was pop singer and 'The Voice Cambodia' semifinalist Suzana; rapper Yuuhai; multi-instrumentalist and singer Vanthan; and rapper VannDa, who is the country's most visible symbol of contemporary Khmer music.
The show was like an intimate 'Tiny Desk' concert set in Phnom Penh, except it was San Francisco, the city at the fulcrum of technology, eclectic music and thought. For more than an hour, the five artists traded rhymes and vocals in Khmer and English, with Vanthan providing beats and loops using modern and traditional instrumentation.
Today, artists in Cambodia bear a heavy burden. From 1975-1979, the country was ruled by the Khmer Rouge, who carried out a genocide of the Cambodian people, while also destroying its art and 90% of its musical instruments. After the Khmer Rouge was overthrown in 1979, the country had to rebuild its cultural legacy from the ground up.
Suzana was in awe that she was representing Cambodian culture in a San Francisco museum dedicated to Asian arts. It was her first time in America.
'I never thought I would be here,' Suzana told the crowd. 'This is like a dream.'
The Bay Area — where roughly 6,000 of the 270,000 Cambodians in the U.S. live, according to the Pew Research Center — played a role in elevating these burgeoning Khmer voices. Empire, a San Francisco-based record label and music distributor, partnered with Cambodian entertainment company Baramey Production — whose founder Laura Mam is a San Jose native — for the event. The next day, they hosted an Oakland pop-up with all five artists where they sold merch and snapped selfies with fans.
In late March 2025, Empire and Baramey signed a deal to help Cambodian artists like VannDa and Suzana find wider exposure and hopefully produce a hit single.
'America is still the place to make your voice heard on a global scale,' Mam told the Chronicle. 'And especially for this event, to come to the Bay — which celebrates diversity — I believe good things can happen. Southeast Asian music will be represented on a larger scale and I think we're part of the wave.'
The Baramey artists were in the city to participate in a special songwriters camp that Empire facilitated at its South of Market studios. They joined other Asian artists — Litty and Zen Masuta from Japan, Basboi from Indonesia — for a week working alongside American songwriters and producers, including Grammy-winner!llmind, who made records with Drake, Beyoncé and J Cole. One afternoon, Empire CEO Ghazi chartered a bus where the artists spent the day visiting local landmarks.
Ghazi designed the Empire Asia camp as a cross-cultural exchange, helping artists improve and expand their art in terms of scope and diasporic markets. It's part workshop, part strategy to embolden the talent pool and build bridges. Two years ago, an Empire Africa camp produced the 2023 hit single 'Lonely at the Top' for Asake, and more recently completed an electronic dance music camp.
Ghazi is now planning future camps for Middle Eastern and Arabic-speaking North African artists.
'It's just really nice to bring everybody together in a creative space and allow them the freedom to do what they love to do most, which is make music,' Ghazi said.
With Empire's influence and proven hit-making prowess exemplified by Shaboozey's 2024 hit 'A Bar Song (Tipsy),' Baramey artists like VannDa have a bright future. For those gathered at Samsung Hall, it was a rare chance to experience Cambodia's artists on the verge of a global breakthrough. Given the historical implications, it was an emotional moment for both artist and audience.
'Setrey Serey (Unbroken),' tears of pride and recognition flowed freely.
'I think the Cambodian community here felt seen,' said Mum. 'Our artists represent a beacon that we hope can be seen in the world and not be invisible anymore. They bring the sound of our despair, our joy, our love. These are the sounds of Cambodia.'

Barry McIlheney was joyously rock ‘n' roll, memorial service told

Former editor of Smash Hits and Empire magazines Barry McIlheney was a leader who was also 'joyously rock 'n' roll and punk rock', a memorial service has heard. The service at St Mark's in Dundela, Belfast, allowed former friends and colleagues to gather and celebrate the life of the journalist, broadcaster and publisher, who also launched Heat magazine. Mr McIlheney, originally from Belfast, died in May at the age of 65. Among those paying tribute at the service on Monday was Mike Edgar, formerly a BBC producer, who said Mr McIlheney had been a 'very special man'. He said: 'Barry had an unstoppable passion for music and everyone you could think of in the world of music had respect for him, and rightly so. 'Without Barry I would never have encountered the crazy worlds of Vince Power or The Pogues. 'They all loved him.' He added: 'Barry was a true journalist, someone who exuded confidence at the right time and never missed a good opportunity if it presented itself. 'On one occasion he was live on the radio with me doing a report from a phone box on Carnaby Street in London and as ever feeding in the 10 pence pieces and entertaining us royally. 'Whilst chatting live on-air, Barry looks out the phone box window and spots Depeche Mode walking down Carnaby Street. 'As quick as anything Baz kicks the door of the phone box open and shouts: 'Hey lads, come and talk to the good people of Northern Ireland on the radio!' – which unbelievably, they dutifully did. 'There then followed a Guinness Book of Records-style moment with three members of Depeche Mode and Barry stuffed into a phone box for what turned into a great moment of showbiz madness 'Only Barry McIlheney would have the brass neck to carry off same!' Mr Edgar said McIlheney, despite his success, had always remained passionate about Belfast. He said: 'Like his contemporaries David Hepworth, Mark Ellen or Niall Stokes, Barry might have worn a suit on occasion but no one could ever call him 'a suit'! 'Barry was a leader, but he was also joyously rock 'n' roll and punk rock.' He added: 'He was well read, brave in his work, always curious, never boring, always kind and always impressive. 'Barry was larger than life, he always greeted us with a smile on his face, wearing his big coat with an upturned collar, a cheeky glint in his eye, a smart one-liner up his sleeve, and a well-earned loveable Belfast swagger.' Delivering the homily at the service, Archbishop of Armagh Rev John McDowell said 'the good that Barry did will not be interred with his bones but will live on in your memories forever'. He said: 'Barry never forgot where he came from, but he didn't talk nonsense about it either. 'It wasn't everything and it wasn't nothing.'

Exclusive: S.F. record label proposes rooftop concert venue at new downtown HQ

San Francisco record label Empire has released music by hitmakers like Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and Cardi B. Now it's working on a major project that would bring more live music to the heart of downtown. Empire is proposing a new rooftop concert venue on the historic One Montgomery building that is also the company's new headquarters. Empire bought the property in January for $22.5 million and hopes to enliven the former bank building. An application was filed Monday to the Planning Department, calling for a new venue operated by the Main Post, a real estate platform. Empire hopes to host artist showcases, public and private concerts and industry panels. Empire founder Ghazi Shami, a San Francisco native, called it a new vision for the area that could help revive downtown. 'Empire has always been rooted in San Francisco, and we're proud to build our permanent headquarters in the heart of the Financial District, establishing a vibrant, world-class destination for artists and the community at large,' he said in a statement. 'Our vision has always been about more than just the music (— we create culture and cultivate community. By restoring a historic building for our new headquarters, we'll be able to further achieve our mission of supporting and empowering artists while offering incredible community-driven events.' The rooftop plans are the latest sign of investment and energy in downtown, which is still grappling with an over 30% office vacancy rate. Nearby, One Sansome St. has a new restaurant called Holbrook House that opened in 2023. The Transamerica Pyramid also received an extensive renovation that included an exclusive bar on the top floor and a public sculpture garden at ground level. And Hines is seeking to build a 1,225-foot office tower at 77 Beale St. that would be the city's tallest building. Outdoor concerts and parties have also become a more common occurrence in San Francisco, with a host of events including regular DJ sets and parties on Third Street, Mint Plaza and Front Street. Chinatown and Valencia Street have been home to night markets. The One Montgomery property, at the corner of Post Street, had been vacant since 2019, when Wells Fargo left the property. The rooftop was previously open to the public before the pandemic. Real estate investors Redco Development and AEW Capital previously bought the building for $82 million near the peak of the market in 2019 — nearly four times what Empire paid this year. Empire has been active all over the city. Empire artist Shaboozy, known for his hit 'A Bar Song (Tipsy),' is playing a free Civic Center concert on Sept. 13 that's expected to draw 15,000 attendees. The label has also collaborated with the Asian Art Museum; celebrated 415 Day; and hosted a party on the Embarcadero. The label plans to work with local San Francisco-based artists, construction unions and businesses on the project. 'When government provides safe and clean streets, we empower entrepreneurs to put their creativity to work for San Francisco. And Ghazi's vision for a brand new event venue and office at One Montgomery, backed by real investment and years of unshakeable commitment to San Francisco, is exactly the kind of forward thinking that will take our city to new heights,' Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement.
