
Seveno Capital, Borderless Healthcare eyes US$1.8 trillion global wellness market
KUALA LUMPUR: Seveno Capital and Borderless Healthcare Group have launched The Well Estate, the world's first medical wellness real estate company to target the growing US$1.8 trillion global wellness market.
According to a statement, the new joint venture between Seveno Capital and Borderless Healthcare Group will focus on asset owners within the 'wellness archipelago' of Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia.
Seveno Capital is led by Park Hotel Group founder and healthspan entrepreneur Allen Law while Borderless Healthcare Group is led by global healthcare technology, media, telecommunication, service and content pioneer Dr Wei Siang Yu.
Law said The Well Estate will enable hospitality asset owners to align their business and guest offerings with the global wellness and longevity revolution that will be equally as transformative as artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, Dr Wei added that The Well Estate sets a new standard for immersive guest experiences that is profitable, purposeful and scalable.
The Well Estate will support hotel and hospitality asset owners to shift from a 'room yield' to a 'room plus' business model by providing turnkey medical wellness solutions, giving guests live access to health and medical experts as well as famous content creators.
By unlocking new revenue streams and increasing the value of each guest stay, The Well Estate aims to improve asset utilisation, particularly for underused spaces such as gyms and spas, with guests also having access to personalised diets, fitness, yoga, mindfulness and health programmes.
According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness industry was valued at US$5.6 trillion in 2023 and is projected to reach US$8.5 trillion by 2027. The wellness economy is also expected to grow by 8.6 per cent annually through 2027, outpacing global gross domestic product (GDP), while luxury wellness resorts can generate 30 to 50 per cent higher daily rates than traditional hotels.
The initiative comes as hotels are investing heavily to meet this demand and to capture a larger share of this lucrative market; integrating labs, diagnostics, intravenous (IV) drips and longevity hubs into their amenities, positioning themselves at the forefront of the evolving wellness economy.

Petronas CEO: Malaysia could become net energy importer within five years
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia could become a net energy importer within the next five years amid rising electricity demand, said Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) president and group chief executive officer Tengku Tan Sri Muhammad Taufik. He said that the surge is driven by rapid economic development, a growing middle class and increasing reliance on technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at a press conference in conjunction with the Energy Asia 2025, Tengku Muhammad Taufik warned that the current electricity supply infrastructure may struggle to keep up with surging demand, which has been growing at an annual rate of 6.5 per cent. He noted that the company is already prepared for this scenario and is currently working to establish a third regasification terminal, following those in Melaka and Johor. "Electricity demand is no longer just from industry and households, but also increasingly from data centres and AI-driven systems. Existing supply alone won't be able to support this," he said. Tengku Taufik said that while Malaysia continues to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) from East Malaysia, the demand in Peninsular Malaysia will soon outstrip supply. We already enjoy the gas supply being able to be robustly sourced not only from our fields offshore east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, but also from our joint development area in Thailand. "About two billion cubic feet of gas that has been delivered to reach our coast and also service the power and non-power needs is going to be outstripped. "Depending on the gas reforms we can expect in the next four to five years, we are going to be growing dependence on a LNG," he added. On global energy volatility, he pointed to the recent rapid jump in oil prices from US$65 to US$75 following missile strikes in the Middle East as a clear sign of how sensitive global markets are to geopolitical shocks. "Anecdotally, you can see it in the behaviour here — the number of oil and gas leaders who've had to step out every hour to manage operations and monitor their exposure in the region. "I don't think anyone's calm. If anything, it's the phenomenon of the ducks swimming over water, we are paddling furiously," he said. Petronas, which has operations in Iraq and personnel based in Abu Dhabi, is among the energy players directly impacted by instability in the region. "Many underestimate the importance of reliable energy supply, especially during a crisis. Overreliance without consistent investment in infrastructure can lead to severe disruptions," Tengku Taufik added. He echoed a warning by Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser, urging the industry not to downplay the importance of energy availability during geopolitical crises. "This is not just about price. It's about the resilience and continuity of the entire energy system. "The industry is often caught in a cycle of inconsistent investment. when supply seems sufficient, funding dries up. But when demand picks up again, we scramble to catch up," Tengku Taufik added.

Thai cabinet approves bid to host Bangkok F1 race
BANGKOK: Thailand moved a step closer to staging Formula One on the streets of Bangkok when the cabinet Tuesday formally approved a government bid to host a race. The bid, worth a reported US$1.2 billion, would see the Thai capital host races from 2028 to 2032, if it is successful when it is submitted to the sport's governing body. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has held multiple meetings with F1 chief Stefano Domenicali in recent months to push the project forward, including last month in Monaco, home to the sport's most storied street race. The layout of the potential Bangkok street circuit has not been revealed but government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said it could include an area near Chatuchak market in the north of the city, which is a magnet for tourists every weekend. The Thai government has touted the idea of a "sustainable" race and said the grand prix could benefit the kingdom to the tune of US$600 million. Most of Formula One's 24-race schedule is confirmed for several years but gaps are set to open up and Domenicali has suggested that Thailand could be a contender to join the circuit. Formula One currently stages one race in Southeast Asia, in Singapore, which is regarded as one of the toughest races of the season because of the intense heat and humidity. Thailand's only current Formula One driver is London-born Alex Albon with the Williams team. - AFP

FMM urges clarity, dialogue on port tariff hike
KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM) remains concerned that the scale and timing of the recent port tariff hikes without detailed cost disclosures or comprehensive stakeholder consultation may place an undue burden on industry. In response to the explanations provided by the Port Klang Authority (PKA) in its press statement dated June 16, 2025, FMM said given the wide-ranging implications for trade, investment and the cost of doing business, it believes the rationale for the revision warrants further scrutiny. "FMM fully respects the right of all stakeholders, including PKA, to present and defend their positions. Constructive dialogue is essential to national development. "However, given the wide-ranging implications of this tariff hike, especially amid broader cost escalations and global uncertainties, we believe it is time to move beyond justification and toward pragmatic resolution," said FMM president Tan Seri Datuk Soh Thian Lai. Soh said the federation disagrees on PKA points that Port Klang's tariff rates will remain among the most competitive in the region. While Port Klang's official handling tariff of RM390 (approximately US$92 per TEU) may appear lower on paper, he said this figure does not reflect the actual cost borne by Malaysian shippers. "Terminal Handling Charges (THC) are not billed directly by port operators to shippers; instead, they are imposed by shipping lines, often with significant mark-ups. "Current publicly available rates by shipping lines show that Malaysian shippers are already paying an average of RM480 per 20-foot container, well above the existing RM300 port handling charge. "Increasing the tariff to RM390 without structural reform will effectively give shipping lines the latitude to raise THC further, potentially reaching the real-world cost range of US$120 to 130 per TEU," he said. Meanwhile, Soh pointed out that port operators face cost pressures like other industries, but it questions whether the proposed tariff hike is truly warranted given current financial and regulatory contexts. Under existing concession agreements, the costs associated with port development and infrastructure are contractually required to be fully borne by port operators, he said. As for the PKA's claims that relative to other increases, port charges are a small fraction of the total cost that consumers will ultimately bear indirectly, FMM disagrees with the narrow framing of cost impact based solely on per-kilogram increments. While PKA's micro-level calculation may appear negligible, he said it overlooks the broader and more significant issue, such as the cumulative cost burden placed on Malaysian exporters, importers and manufacturers. "PKA's analysis fails to acknowledge that logistics costs are already among the highest contributors to the cost of doing business in Malaysia. "The impact of a 30 per percent increase in container handling charges and a 200–243 per cent hike in storage charges cannot be minimised by simplistic per-unit cost metrics. "FMM reiterates that the evaluation of port tariff adjustments must be done holistically, accounting for their multiplier effect across the supply chain and national economy," he said. In addition, Soh said FMM reiterates that claims of "modest" increases are not supported by the quantum of the adjustments, which are among the steepest seen in recent memory. Without detailed, he said, transparent cost justifications, these increases will be viewed as revenue maximisation at the expense of trade facilitation. "Maintaining investor confidence and trade momentum requires a holistic approach where competitiveness is grounded in predictable pricing, stakeholder consultation and a transparent cost-recovery framework. "FMM urges the authorities to defer the hike and engage the industry in reassessing a sustainable, accountable tariff structure aligned with national economic goals," he added.
