138 Johor Religious School Canteens To Be Halal-certified By Year-end

Barnama14-07-2025
JOHOR BAHRU, July 14 (Bernama) -- A total of 138 Sekolah Agama Kerajaan Johor (SAKJ) canteens will be halal-certified by December, in line with the implementation of the Johor State Halal Development Plan 2030, said State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid.
He said the first phase of the initiative involved 50 Grade A and 88 Grade B school canteens, and that the remaining 437 Grade C canteens would be addressed in stages beginning next year.
'This initiative is part of the state government's efforts to reach the target of 500 new halal certificates by the end of this year as an initial step towards achieving 5,000 by 2030.
'This concerted effort aims not only to improve halal compliance standards in schools but also to increase awareness among canteen and cafeteria operators, as well as food providers at government departments and agencies,' he said in a Facebook post.
He said the state government also planned to extend the halal certification campaign to the private sector to support the development of a more comprehensive halal ecosystem in Johor.
Mohd Fared said Johor had 1,200 halal certificate holders to date, and this figure was expected to grow further with the development of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
'Halal is not only a religious obligation for Muslims, but it has also been recognised as a benchmark for high standards of cleanliness, management, and business integrity.
'This is clearly supported by non-Muslim entrepreneurs, many of whom are halal certificate holders in Johor and across the country,' he said.
He added that the Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) and the Johor State Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ) were currently working on a more efficient and user-friendly halal certification application framework to ease the process for applicants.

Trump annouces Indonesia trade deal that cuts tariffs, non-tariff barriers

Bernama WASHINGTON: United States (US) President Donald Trump announced Tuesday the finalisation of a "framework" trade agreement with Indonesia that he said will eliminate 99 per cent of the tariffs imposed on US exports to the island nation, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "It is agreed that Indonesia will be Open Market to American Industrial and Tech Products, and Agricultural Goods, by eliminating 99 per cent of their Tariff Barriers. "The United States of America will now sell American Made products to Indonesia at a Tariff Rate of ZERO, while Indonesia will pay 19 per cent on all of their products coming into the USA," Trump wrote on social media. "In addition, Indonesia will supply the United States with their precious Critical Minerals, as well as sign BIG Deals, worth Tens of Billions of Dollars, to purchase Boeing Aircraft, American Farm products, and American Energy. "This Deal is a HUGE WIN for our Automakers, Tech Companies, Workers, Farmers, Ranchers, and Manufacturers," Trump added. A senior Trump administration official earlier Tuesday described the agreement as a "framework" that they said "shows exactly how the President is resetting the terms of trade to ensure that we can reduce our deficit, both by regulating imports and also expanding exports." Besides eliminating nearly all tariffs on US exports to Indonesia, the agreement seeks to address "a range of non-tariff barriers" on agricultural and industrial US exports via exemptions on content requirements and licensing regimes, and other measures, the White House said in a statement. The official who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity said that some Indonesian exports would face trade duties above the 19 per cent rate established in the agreement. That includes goods that are shipped through Indonesia to US markets, or contain a lot of content from" third-party nations, which will face a 40 per cent tariff. Several of the agreement's provisions remain to be negotiated, however, including the removal of digital trade barriers and strengthening rules to ensure that the agreement's benefits can only be reaped by Indonesia and the US rather than third-party countries. The announcement comes just over a week before the US president's Aug 1 deadline for nations to strike new trade agreements with Washington or face heightened tariffs. The original July 9 deadline was pushed back by the White House to give negotiators more time. Peter Navarro, the US president's trade adviser, said in April shortly after Trump announced his tariff push that the administration would seek to conclude "90 deals in 90 days," but that goal has proved illusory. Prior to the Indonesia announcement, only two nations, the UK and Vietnam, concluded interim trade deals with Trump.

Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid tariff deadline concerns

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by cautious optimism ahead of the looming Aug 1 tariff deadline. At 8.03 am, the local currency strengthened to 4.2195/2375 against the greenback, up from Tuesday's close of 4.2300/2370. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is likely to trade between RM4.22 and RM4.24 today as markets remain wary of potential tariff impacts. 'Investors are adopting a guarded stance, waiting for clearer signals on trade policies,' he noted. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes attributed the ringgit's early gains to shifting macroeconomic conditions. 'The US dollar is under pressure from falling Treasury yields and domestic political concerns, which is benefiting emerging market currencies like the ringgit,' he said. Innes added that the ringgit's rebound reflects more than just a temporary bounce. 'A softer dollar, renewed trade talks, and hopes for tariff relief are creating a favourable environment for the ringgit,' he told Bernama. He also highlighted ongoing negotiations between Malaysia and the US, where Malaysian officials are reportedly seeking a reduced tariff rate of 15–20 per cent, compared to the proposed 25 per cent. Against other major currencies, the ringgit showed mixed performance. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8767/8891 from 2.8690/8739 and dipped versus the euro to 4.9528/9740 from 4.9512/9594. However, it edged higher against the British pound, rising to 5.7052/7295 from 5.7088/7183. Regionally, the ringgit strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.3001/3144 from 3.3011/3071 and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.7 from 259.1/259.7. It also gained slightly against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.43 from 7.41/7.43. However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.1138/1767 from 13.0899/1172. - Bernama
