Man, 20s, rushed to hospital after late night city assault

A man was rushed to Cork University Hospital after being attacked on the city's southside on Saturday night. The incident unfolded around 10pm on St Finbarr's Street, near Elizabeth Fort and St Finbarr's Cathedral. The victim, a man in his 20s, suffered "non-life threatening injuries" and was taken to CUH. The Gardaí are investigating and officers have yet to arrest anyone. A Garda spokesperson confirmed to CorkBeo: "Gardaí received report of an incident of assault that occurred at approximately 10pm last night, Saturday, 9th of August 2025 on St Finbarr's Street in Cork City. "A man aged in his 20s was conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained during this incident.", reports Cork Beo. "There have been no arrests at this time. Investigations are ongoing." The location of St Finbarr's Street in the city. (Image: Google) This follows another incident on the southside of the city on Thursday where a woman was assaulted on Gilabbey Street, just 300 metres from the site of last night's attack. Recently, footage has also been shared of a separate incident on Washington Street, where a group of men were filmed fighting in the middle of the road. The video of the Washington Street brawl, shared online by one gobsmacked passerby, has been viewed thousands of times and follows a string of similar incidents in Cork city in recent months. These include an attack on a vulnerable member of Cork's homeless community that took place on Grand Parade in May. TDs slammed the May attack as "disgusting." Deputy Thomas Gould, Sinn Fein TD for Cork North-Central, voiced his concern at that time: "The greatest deterrent to crime in our city centre is a visible Garda presence, but the reality is that there just aren't enough Gardaí to maintain that in any meaningful way." Gardai to quiz couple whose ‘new evidence' was binned from McGregor case appeal – after pair approached ex-UFC star

The Irish Sun on Sunday has learned they approached McGregor prior to swearing the legal docs MAC COUPLE QUIZ Gardai to quiz couple whose 'new evidence' was binned from McGregor case appeal – after pair approached ex-UFC star THE couple whose 'new evidence' was binned from Conor McGregor's rape case appeal will be quizzed by cops, we can reveal. Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins provided sworn affidavits which were set to be used as part of the ex-UFC star's bid to overturn a civil jury's ruling that he raped Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel in 2018. 2 Steven Cummins and Samantha O'Reilly provided sworn affidavits with 'new evidence' by McGregor Credit: social media collect The Irish Sun on Sunday has learned they approached McGregor, 37, prior to swearing the legal docs. They claimed to have seen Ms Hand's then boyfriend assault her on the night of McGregor's alleged sex attack in December 2018. This was due to be a key prong of McGregor's appeal, which he last month lost, after Ms Hand won €250,000 in damages following the Civil High Court verdict last year. However, his legal team sensationally withdrew the material from his appeal. The Irish Sun yesterday revealed a Garda investigation has been launched in relation to the withdrawal of this 'new evidence'. The major probe is being led by National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. They are examining the contents of the affidavits, focusing on the withdrawal of the couple's claims by McGregor. Cops are examining whether perjury was committed, which has been strenuously denied. A senior source said: 'The investigation is examining the withdrawal of sworn material, so it is a given that those who provided that material will be interviewed in relation to it.' The Court of Appeal had referred the withdrawal of the couple's evidence to the DPP, who passed it to cops. Our source said: 'The Gardai are progressing on the matter and establishing the facts. 'When a number of tasks are completed, it will go back to the DPP to decide what the next steps are.'
