Revealed: How Liverpool boss Arne Slot 'convinced Hugo Ekitike to join Liverpool during video call', ahead of £80m move
Ekitike, 23, is nearing an £80million move to Merseyside as the Reds seek to bolster their attacking options ahead of the upcoming season.
As the transfer inches closer to being a done deal, details have emerged of a video call that allegedly took place between Slot and Ekitike.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, published on Monday morning, Slot was claimed to have discussed how the striker would fit into his plans at Anfield.
The post cited an article from French publication L'Equipe, which stated: 'In Arne Slot's video call with Hugo Ekitike, the idea of a 4-2-3-1 is presented to the player.
'Slot discusses an evolution in the Reds' game plan, including possession sequences.
The call was claimed to have occurred in a post uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, on Monday morning
'In this context, he also needs a creative, mobile number nine capable of combining, pushing forward, and also playing deep.
'Ekitike emerged from this exchange seduced.'
The France U21 international wants to move to the Premier League champions - which saw Newcastle United pull out of the race to sign him after their £70million offer was turned down.
It was indicated last Thursday that Liverpool were ready to bid for Etikite and they have been in discussions with the Bundesliga club over the structure and amount they are willing to pay.
Etikite has an £86million release clause and it remains to be seen how close they will get to that figure.
Newcastle's own failure to land the Frenchman comes after Liverpool made an approach for their star striker Alexander Isak.
The Athletic reported last week that Liverpool had not made a formal offer and remain 'well aware' of the Magpies' stance that their star man is not for sale.
However, speculation was rife around his future at St. James' Park after he was let out of Newcastle's squad for their opening pre-season friendly - a 4-0 loss against Celtic on Saturday.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe explained the Swede's absence from the squad after the match
But Magpies coach Eddie Howe was quick to address the situation after his side's defeat at Parkhead.
He said: 'I chose to send him home. The last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand and under that scrutiny, then if he wasn't going to play today, we mutually agreed he shouldn't be here.
'It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us, but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. Both [Joelinton and Isak] are fit but not ready to play. Alex has trained and is fine but we didn't want to take the risk with him.
'Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal,' he added. 'I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him.

Florian Wirtz will make Liverpool tick, the 16-year-old prodigy ready for the first team - and the one area Arne Slot STILL needs to strengthen: FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED from the Reds' 2-4 defeat by AC Milan
Liverpool fell to defeat in the first match of their pre-season tour of Asia after old foes AC Milan exploited poor defending to beat the Premier League champions 4-2. The Reds fell behind early to a Rafael Leao strike before Dominik Szoboszlai equalised. Noah Okafor scored two after the break and Ruben Loftus-Cheek was also on target for the Italians, while Cody Gakpo scored a consolation goal for Liverpool. Arne Slot's men now jet on to Tokyo for the second leg of their tour and the boss has plenty to ponder – with both positives and worrying signs to come out of this game. Mail Sport's Lewis Steele was in Hong Kong and here are his five key takeaways… Centre back(s) needed at Liverpool Joe Gomez is now back in England after flying home from Liverpool's tour of Asia on Friday night, reporting pain in his Achilles. It was decided that instead of him staying out here for the second leg of the tour in Japan, it would be best for him to travel back to the north west to undergo recovery work. The injury has only been mooted as minor and he is expected back soon – but it is still a worry given the long-serving defender played just 11 minutes in 2025 with two lengthy lay-offs last season. With Jarell Quansah signing for Bayer Leverkusen for £35million earlier this transfer window, that leaves just three senior centre backs – and one is already on the treatment table. Ryan Gravenberch and Kostas Tsimikas, who made a late mistake for Milan's fourth, were both trialled at the heart of defence in this game but neither of them seem like long-term options. Yes, Gravenberch has played there before and has done well, but playing him in defence means you miss his mercurial midfield displays. So, it feels like despite spending £295million and even if Alexander Isak was to make a sensational switch to the club, they are still at least one defender light. And that's not to mention the fact Real Madrid are courting Konate, whose contract is up next summer! Defence looks uncharacteristically open There were some off-brand mistakes from Virgil van Dijk in the first half, all of which can be excused by the fact that it is pre-season. AC Milan's first goal came from makeshift defender Gravenberch stepping too far up and being caught out by diving into a challenge. Then Van Dijk seemed to invite Leao to shoot and he duly obliged, though the Portugal winger still had a lot of work to do. In the second half, when Konate and Tsimikas were the defenders, Liverpool conceded two preventable goals on the counter-attack. One from the left, one the right, they were similar in that the Reds press was evaded and then pacy wingers exploited mass space in behind. Full backs Conor Bradley and Milos Kerkez were perhaps guilty of being on their toes as Leao and Alexis Sealemaekers darted past them and Milan ended up scoring. Again, not a huge worry – but work to be done by Slot on the training ground maybe. Wirtz will make the team tick The 50,000 locals who packed out the Kai Tak Stadium can say they were the first Liverpool fans to see him don the famous red jersey in a game. He played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Stoke last week but this was his first real outing – and wow, what a player. Liverpool have paid £116m for the privilege of him being their man but he looks like the sort of star who could transform their whole team. The German had some spellbinding moments here and could have registered a couple of assists if his team-mates' finishing was better. His first touch was breathtakingly good and, worrying for defenders of Premier League rivals, his link-up with Mohamed Salah was on point. The pair seemed to be on the right wavelength and, given this is only pre-season, that is pleasing for the coaching staff to see. How did young players fare? Rio Ngumoha is often cited as the best star in Liverpool's academy and labelled as a big prospect for the future. The first part of that sentence is correct but the ending is not: he is not one for the future, he is one for now. The 16-year-old caused all sorts of problems for AC Milan's defenders in the 45 minutes he played, with some mazy runs and eye-catching creative play. Signed from Chelsea a year ago, the kid who wears just 'Rio' on the back of his shirt was tipped for big things and Liverpool believed they had signed a golden gem. Even though he is still 16, it is not a huge surprise to see him progressing as he is in the first team ranks. Ngumoha was caught in possession cheaply in one of his first touches but settled after that. One thing he must work on in the coming years is to know when to play the simple pass and when to embark on one of his dribbles. Sometimes, it feels like he is trying to do too much – but fair play to him, he has a lot in his locker so why not try it? The same, perhaps, can be said about 18-year-old Trey Nyoni, another poached from a rival academy in his mid-teens. Midfielder Nyoni joined from Leicester in 2023 and is thriving in the big-boy picture now, with six first-team appearances to his name. Slot rates Nyoni highly and he had some eye-catching moments here, the most notable being when he danced through the Milan defence but could not find the finish. If he had that chance back, the teenager knows he should have taken on the shot earlier. Is it 'adios' to two South American stars? Two men were conspicuous by their absence. Neither Luis Diaz nor Darwin Nunez were in the 22-man matchday squad for Liverpool as speculation continues about their future at the club. Both are expected to leave this summer despite being on the Asia tour, with Bayern Munich readying a second bid for Diaz after a £58m was turned down. The Colombian is keen to pursue his options elsewhere. Nunez, likewise, has long been expected to depart the club despite clubs being unwilling to cough up the price Liverpool are asking for, which is around £70m. Though Saudi Arabian outfits are expected to return to the table for him, with Napoli previously in talks. The pair were at the stadium but the fact they were not playing was suspicious, and may point to their exits sooner rather than later. Alexis Mac Allister, meanwhile, is back in full training after nursing a long-term problem that he played through last season, while Wataru Endo is also likely to feature in his homeland of Japan after being out with illness.

West Ham unlikely to start legal battle with the FA if Lucas Paqueta is cleared of spot-fixing after two-year saga and collapse of dream Man City move
West Ham are unlikely to start a furious legal battle with the FA if Lucas Paqueta is cleared of spot-fixing in a two-year saga that led to the collapse of an £85million move to Manchester City. The bombshell verdict on whether Paqueta deliberately picked up four yellow cards during Premier League matches to influence betting markets is due to land in the coming days with sources suggesting the Brazilian is expected to be cleared. Paqueta was on the verge of a mega move to Manchester City in August 2023 when Mail Sport broke the news that the Brazilian was under investigation by the FA for four suspicious bookings. City pulled the plug as soon as West Ham made them aware of the investigation, costing Paqueta a dream move, potentially his entire career, and West Ham a huge payday. The investigation and trial is believed to have cost the club nearly £2m in fees and it remains to be seen whether the FA will have to stump up the bill, though club insiders believe it unlikely. West Ham will look to sell Paqueta this summer to help fund Graham Potter 's squad overhaul but stand no chance of landing a fee anywhere near as large. Paqueta's potential clearing has led for calls from the fan base to take action against the FA for the club missing out on a huge windfall. They needed to sell players before they could buy this summer to keep in line with PSR rules and they didn't make their first signing until Mohammed Kudus's £55m move to Tottenham. West Ham are furious at how long the trial has taken, and the toll it has taken on Paqueta, however senior Hammers sources told Mail Sport the club would not consider taking action against the FA. It's understood West Ham don't think it would be good for football if they were to sue the game's custodians. An emotional return to hometown club Flamengo is a possibility for Paqueta, though sources say the Hammers would want in way in excess of £25m otherwise will not consider selling him.

Will Lauren James play in Euro 2025 final? England vs Spain predicted line-ups
Lauren James was part of a 23-player England squad involved in training on Saturday morning ahead of the Euro 2025 final clash against Spain. The Lionesses are hoping to be crowned champions of Europe once again on Sunday following their triumph at Euro 2022 under Sarina Wiegman. England face a tough test against Spain, who beat them in the 2023 World Cup final, with supporters keep to know how Wiegman's side will line up. Metro has predicted the England XI for the Euro 2025 final – and you can scroll down for the latest team news, start time and how to watch it… Lionesses star James remains in a race to prove her fitness after being forced off at half time in Tuesday's semi-final comeback win over Italy. James picked up an ankle injury – and despite training the day before the final – Wiegman has said that she is unsure if the player will be fully fit. 'She's still recovering,' Wiegman said on Friday. 'She's doing things on the pitch and we have two more days so we're going to give her time. 'We don't know yet [if she'll be ready], but that's what we're going to go for – [we want to have] 23 players available for the game on Sunday.' If James is unable to start, Chloe Kelly could take her spot on the right wing after scoring a 119th-minute winner off the bench against Italy. England centre-back Esme Morgan made her first major tournament start last time out and is set to keep her place next to captain Leah Williamson. Alessia Russo looks set to start for the Lionesses too despite Michelle Agyemang's late heroics in the last two knockout games from the bench. Spain, meanwhile, are set to have Laia Aleixandri return to the backline after she served a one-match ban against Germany on Wednesday. Viewers will have a choice between BBC One and ITV 1, with both TV channels providing live coverage of the final in the United Kingdom. Analysis from Metro's Sports Reporter Liam Grace… England's road to the Euro 2025 final has been a rollercoaster of resilience and emotion – last-gasp equalisers, heart-stopping penalty drama and a defiant response to their opening ground-stage defeat to France have all shaped a storyline worthy of the grandest stage. Now, the Lionesses stand on the edge of history, with an opportunity to become the first England team ever to defend a major tournament title. It is Spain, the tournament favourites before a ball was kicked, who stand in their way. La Roja are aiming to make their own history – having never been crowned champions of Europe before – and they have a number of impressive stars who can cause England problems. Having scored four goals in five matches, Spain forward Esther Gonzalez enters the final as the tournament's leading scorer. England will also have to deal with the likes of Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas and Athenea del Castillo – some of the best players in women's football. We're set for a fiery rematch of the 2023 World Cup final – with previous clashes between the two nations packed with tension – so expect more of the same on Sunday… with England hopefully coming out on top. Prediction: England 2-1 Spain Speaking ahead of the final, England manager Wiegman said: 'I think that both teams have so much respect for each other. 'They are good on the ball, so I expect they'll have the ball a little bit more, but we have played games where we've had a certain amount of ball possession too. More Trending 'We are just preparing as well as possible. We have to defend really well and try to harm them at other moments.' Spain head coach Montse Tome added: 'It's an incredible joy to be in the final. I'm very happy for the players, the staff, and everything we are building here in Switzerland. 'Now, it's time to recover. We'll start looking at England more closely, although our analysts have already been watching them live and studying their performances. 'We're going to dive deeper into their game, and we're going all in.'
