'He's earned his way into the race now off this win,' Attard said.

Ridden by Pietro Moran, Mansetti sat a comfortable second in the early part of the race behind pacesetter War Signal. Moran pushed the three-year-old colt to the lead just before the top of the stretch and held off Scorching by a length at odds of 5-1.

'When we heard the outside horses around the turn, he really picked it up,' Moran, Woodbine's leading rider said. 'He showed me he's going to grind the rest of the way and down the lane it was just a matter of getting him home. He's all heart.'

Distance had been a question mark for Mansetti.

'This spring, he's trained differently,' Attard said. 'He's really mentally matured a lot.'
Article content
'He's always showed a lot of talent, it's just been a matter of one good race, one bad race.'

Mansetti may join well-regarded stablemate Dewolf in the plate. John Charalambous-trained Scorching may also be in the field after a good outing in his first start since October.

The Marine was one of five stakes on the card. Patches O'Houlihan scored his second turf stakes win in the $234,000 Highlander Stakes. And just like last year in the Nearctic Stakes, the reigning Canadian horse of the year nearly drifted to the outside rail but still managed to hold off My Boy Prince by a neck.

Jockey Sofia Vives tried to keep him as straight as possible but the five-year-old continued to drift his way to his 13th win in 16 career starts. Unfortunately, Patches O'Houlihan suffered a soft-tissue leg injury and was pulled up after the race. He was able to walk onto the horse van and was reported to be resting well once he returned to his stall.

Vives returned to win the $180,000 Nassau Stakes aboard 12-1 long shot Ocean Club. They took control of the race with over a half-mile remaining and had more than enough in the stretch to hold off Ready For Shirl for a one-length score.

Tom Proctor trains the five-year-old mare who now has six wins in 20 career starts. 2024 King's Plate winner Caitlinhergrtness was well back.

In the $158,000 Dominion Day Stakes, Funtastic Again took the lead at the break and went gate-to-tire. Victor Espinoza, making a rare venture to Woodbine, rode the five-year-old Wesley Ward trainee to the win. The Kentucky-based horse now has five wins in 13 career starts.

The $150,000 Selene Stakes was also won in gate-to-wire fashion. Serendipity took command within the first few strides in the 1 1/16-mile race and never saw a rival the rest of the way. Rafael Hernandez rode the three-year-old daughter of Street Sense, who was making her first start for trainer Josie Carroll and first start on a synthetic surface.

Montreal beats New York City FC 1-0 on Victor Loturi's goal to net first home win

New York City FC goalie Tomas Romero stops CF Montreal's Prince Owusu advance on net during second half MLS action In Montreal, Saturday, June 28, 2025. (Peter McCabe/The Canadian Press) Victor Loturi scored in the 23rd minute and Montreal won its first home game this season in nine attempts with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC on Saturday night. Montreal (3-12-5) completed the season sweep over New York (8-7-4) for the first time ever. Dante Sealy found himself isolated with a defender on the right side of the 18-yard box and he sent in a powerful shot that was spilled to Loturi for a one-touch finish. It was Loturi's first goal for the club. Montreal had two other good opportunities to double the lead in the second half. Luca Petrasso was left unmarked in front of the goal following a corner kick, but he was unable to control the bouncing ball. Moments later, Jules-Anthony Vilsaint was denied by a fingertip save from Tomas Romero. Jonathan Sirois secured his fourth clean sheet of the season. Montreal will face Inter Miami on July 5 if the Florida side is eliminated from the Club World Cup. This report by The Associated Press was first published on June 28, 2025.

FLAMES FREE AGENCY PREVIEW: Who could Conroy target on Canada Day?

With the 2025 NHL Draft now in the rearview mirror, attention will immediately turn to the annual free-agent frenzy. Article content While the Calgary Flames have gobs of salary-cap space, we don't expect them to be especially busy on Canada Day. They still have some more retooling to do before Craig Conroy is likely to be reeling in any big fish. Article content Article content With Dan Vladar set to test the market, Conroy is certainly shopping for a backup goaltender. His wish-list should also include a left-shot defenceman and perhaps a right-shot forward. Article content Postmedia Calgary's beat writers, Danny Austin and Wes Gilbertson, scanned the list of 100-and-some unrestricted free agents to offer up eight potential targets for the Flames … Article content Ryan Lindgren, D Article content Age: 27 Article content Current cap-hit: US$4.5 million Article content Why I'm intrigued: Lindgren, who spent parts of seven seasons in the Big Apple before being traded to Colorado in March, would address Calgary's need for another steady, dependable presence on the left side of their defence crew. The reason that he'd be my top target is that during his run with the Rangers, Lindgren played the vast majority of his minutes alongside Adam Fox. Since that was such a nice fit, could he be the ideal complement to help guide Zayne Parekh — like Fox, an offensive whiz — through his transition to the NHL? Lindgren, who is also an effective penalty-killer, should have several suitors so some term will be required. Article content Article content Current cap-hit: US$1.6 million Article content Standout stat: Suter put up 46 points last season. Only four Flames players had more Article content Why I'm intrigued: This largely comes down to the Flames not having a tonne of centres, but with the Pacific Division looking like it's going to get more competitive next year, why not weaken a rival? Suter isn't going to come in and be a star who transforms the Flames, but he's a legitimate centre who could give you cover if Mikael Backlund moves on after the final season of his contract or you look to trade Nazem Kadri. He'd be an affordable option and the Flames aren't at the point in their retool process where they should be looking to spend big. Article content Current employer: Carolina Hurricanes
