Feds charge man for buying fireworks in NM, claiming he was going to use them against police in LA
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A Texas man is facing federal charges after allegedly purchasing fireworks in New Mexico and expressing plans to use them to harm law enforcement officers and government officials during protests in California, according to the Department of Justice. 'Threats like these strike at the heart of law and order — we will not hesitate to bring federal charges against anyone who seeks to harm law enforcement or endanger the safety of our communities,' Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated in part in a news release. Story continues below Wildfire: House sitter becomes unexpected hero, saving four protected raptors during Trout Fire Trending: New restaurant in Old Town takes over space left by beloved eatery Crime: Man sentenced for stealing copper in downtown Albuquerque News: Feds charge man for buying fireworks in NM, claiming he was going to use them against police in LA The feds said Grzegorz Vandenberg, 48, visited a travel center in Lordsburg to purchase the fireworks on June 12, 2025. While there, Vandenberg reportedly asked the cashier about the biggest fireworks that he could buy and the ones that could cause harm, according to court documents. Vandenberg told store employees that he was a prior special forces military and claimed he could make pipe bombs. He then reportedly told employees that he was traveling to Los Angeles for the 'riots' with the intent to kill law enforcement officers or government officials, court documents stated. Store staff reported that Vandenberg invited an employee to join him and his platoon in California and also claimed to have mortar explosives in his possession and reiterated his plan to use them to kill officers, per court documents. Officials said Vandenberg purchased six mortars, each containing 60 grams of gunpowder, and 36 large fireworks before leaving the store in a vehicle with Montana license plates, heading west on Interstate 10. Before he could leave, the cashier wrote down the vehicle's license plate number, officials said. 'Our message is clear: If you come after law enforcement officers, the FBI will spare no effort to find you and bring you to justice,' said FBI Director Kash Patel in the news release. 'This defendant allegedly intended to use explosives to attack police officers currently conducting law enforcement operations in Los Angeles and – with the help of a store cashier who took down his license plate information – we were able to put a stop to that plan. Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to serve the American people and the FBI will always do our part to protect them.' Vandenberg is charged with transporting explosives in interstate commerce with the knowledge and intent that they would be used to kill, injure, or intimidate individuals. The DOJ said Vandenberg will remain in custody on conditions of release pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled. If convicted of the current charges, Vandenberg faces up to 10 years in federal prison. The Las Cruces Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Tucson Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Phoenix Field Office, Tucson Police Department, U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and Homeland Security Investigations El Paso. Arrest of Chinese nationals in swing state, Israel's fight with Iran are 'wake up' call on CCP threat: experts
Recent arrests of Chinese nationals at the University of Michigan have resurrected concerns about CCP-owned farmland and property in the United States, particularly in Michigan, and caused some to draw parallels with the current conflict between Iran and Israel. Earlier this month, two Chinese nationals were charged with allegedly smuggling a "dangerous biological pathogen" into the U.S. to study at the University of Michigan in an incident that FBI Director Kash Patel described as a "sobering reminder that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) continues to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate our institutions and target our food supply, an act that could cripple our economy and endanger American lives." Later, a third Chinese national with connections to the university was arrested, renewing questions about China's efforts to infiltrate and influence various sectors in the United States, including buying up farmland, which has been a growing concern nationwide. A 2023 report from the United States Department of Agriculture found that "foreign persons held an interest in nearly 45 million acres of U.S. agricultural land," which represents 3.5% of all privately held agricultural land and 2% of all land in the country. New Legislation Aims To Tell China 'No' On Buying Up American Farmland While China is not at the top of the list of countries in that report, the arrests in Michigan have prompted calls from Congress to ensure that the CCP, viewed by many as the nation's top geopolitical adversary, is not buying up farmland in the United States. Read On The Fox News App Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts exclusively told Fox News Digital this week that China has been aggressively buying American agriculture, "which is why we need to have a heightened sense of vigilance around protecting our homeland." Ricketts, along with Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, introduced the bipartisan Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure (AFIDA) Improvements Act that seeks to implement recommendations published by the Government Accountability Office in January 2024, which found the AFIDA was ill-equipped to combat foreign ownership of American agricultural land. "China's land purchases aren't just about acreage—they're about access," Michigan GOP Rep. John Moolenaar, chairman of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, told Fox News Digital. "Even small parcels near military bases or critical infrastructure pose serious national security risks. In my home state, we've seen concerning cases like Gotion's site near Camp Grayling. We need full transparency into who's buying land and where—because the Chinese Communist Party shouldn't be allowed to hide behind shell companies to gain a foothold in our country." Fbi Director Patel Leads Charge To Root Out Chinese Influence On Us Soil China's encroachment into Michigan's agriculture was enough of a concern for Republican state Rep. Gina Johnsen to introduce legislation earlier this year banning foreign adversaries from buying up farmland. "Our state's agricultural industry is a pillar of our economy. My community is an agricultural community," Johnsen said. Our farms provide food security, jobs, and economic stability for countless residents. However, there is growing concern about losing our farmland to countries of concern." Additionally, Chinese farmland has become a topic of conversation in the wake of revelations that Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear capabilities was aided by years of covert planning, surveillance and infiltration by Israeli intelligence. Code-named "Am Kelavi" (Rising Lion), the preemptive operation was the product of unprecedented coordination between the Israeli air force, the Military Intelligence Directorate, the Mossad and the country's defense industries. For years, they worked "shoulder to shoulder" to gather the intelligence files needed to eliminate Iran's most sensitive military and nuclear assets. As part of that operation, Israel was able to establish a drone base inside Iran, where Mossad operatives retrieved them from hiding spots to use against Iranian sites. Bryan Cunningham, president of Liberty Defense and former CIA intelligence officer, told Fox News Digital that the Israeli operation is a "wake-up call" for the United States about what a foreign adversary like China could potentially carry out in the United States. "As an intelligence officer, part of me says, I wish that the sources and methods of building these drone factories inside the target countries hadn't been revealed," Cunningham said. "But on the other hand, it does serve as a wake-up call, hopefully for our policymakers, and it also ties in, and if I were the administration, I would make this tie in immediately and loudly with the Trump administration's border strategy." Cunningham continued, "Our borders are where you're most likely to actually intercept these kinds of toxins, explosives, flares, 3D-printed weapons, ceramic weapons, whatever it is. So if it were me and I were the Secretary of Homeland Security, I would be tying this all together. You know, it is important to get people out of the country that have committed violent or other serious crimes in the country, but it's also really important to prevent people like these guys from bringing in those kinds of materials." The FBI is increasing its surveillance of Iranian-backed operatives inside the United States as Trump weighs strikes, a senior law enforcement official told Fox News on Friday. DHS reveals shocking 500% increase in assaults against ICE officers during operations
The Department of Homeland Security released shocking new statistics Thursday showing that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are facing a severe escalation in assaults during ICE operations. According to the release, agents have experienced a 500% increase in assaults while carrying out recent enforcement operations. "Just this week, an ICE officer was dragged 50 yards by a car while arresting an illegal alien sex offender," Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a press release. Ice Ramps Up Arrests Of Convicted Criminals As Riots Rage In Blue City: 'You Will Not Stop Us' The escalation extends to other immigration operations, including Border Patrol. On Thursday, DHS posted about an incident in Bell and Maywood, CA where Patrol vehicles were "violently targeted during lawful operations." A vehicle was rammed, and its tires were slashed, DHS said. Another civilian also struck a federal vehicle, totaling it, according to the department. The driver was arrested for alleged vehicular assault as a mob formed and continued to slash more tires. Read On The Fox News App Secretary McLaughlin said ICE agents put their lives on the line every day and blamed Democrats for allegedly putting them in harm's way by demonizing them. Dhs Fires Back At Democrats For 'Beyond The Pale' Rhetoric As Ice Agents Face Wave Of Violent Threats "Every day the men and women of ICE put their lives on the line to protect and defend the lives of American citizens. Make no mistake, Democrat politicians like Hakeem Jeffries, Mayor Wu of Boston, Governor Tim Walz, and Mayor Bass of Los Angeles are contributing to the surge in assaults of our ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE," McLaughlin said. "From comparisons to the modern-day Nazi Gestapo to glorifying rioters, the violent rhetoric of these sanctuary politicians is despicable. This violence against ICE must end." DHS said family members of ICE agents are also being targeted and doxxed. The department said anyone caught committing these crimes would be penalized. "Those who dox our ICE agents will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DHS said. "Secretary Noem's message is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down. ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the statement said. DHS said it will not be deterred and that CBP and its partners will continue to enforce the law — "relentless and unapologetic."Original article source: DHS reveals shocking 500% increase in assaults against ICE officers during operations
