Western Michigan point guard Chansey Willis committed to the U on Monday, following combo guard Langston Reynolds from Northern Colorado on Sunday.

'Chansey is a great playmaker who makes others around him better,' U head coach Niko Medved said in a statement. 'He is a dynamic scorer who can use his speed to his advantage. In addition, he's a great two-way player and we're excited to have him on our team.'
Willis, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, averaged 16.8 points and 5.8 assists in 24 games last season. He shot 43% from the field, 28% from 3-point range and 72% from the free-throw line.
Willis might have two years of eligibility remaining for Minnesota, following the start of his college career at Saginaw Valley State (Division II) as a freshman and Henry Ford College (a junior college) as a sophomore. Within the last year, current college players have not had years spent at junior college count against their NCAA eligibility.
Willis, a Detroit native, was the state of Michigan's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022.

The program officially announced Reynolds' addition on Monday.
'We're excited to add Langston to our team,' Medved said in a release. 'Langston is a physical, athletic guard who plays well in transition, can get downhill and has good rebounding ability. He also has a great personality and we're thrilled to have him in the Maroon and Gold.'
The Gophers now have four scholarship spots still available for next season.

Gophers football picked to finish 11th in Big Ten this fall

The Gophers football team was picked to finish outside the top half of the Big Ten Conference in the preseason poll released Monday. Minnesota received 192 total votes and slotted in at 11th in the 18-team league, one spot above rival Wisconsin. Penn State edged out Ohio State to win the conference in its second year with the four new programs from the West Coast. Gophers sophomore safety Koi Perich received five votes for preseason defensive player of the year, but the U didn't garner any votes for offensive player of the year, nor coach of the year. Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is the top defensive POY, Buckeyes receiver Jeremiah Smith is the No. 1 offensive POY and Nittany Lions coach James Franklin is the coach of the year favorite. Here is the full preseason poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total votes: As compiled by 1. Penn State (11) — 435 2. Ohio State (10) — 431 3. Oregon (2) — 405 4. Popular Big Ten podcast releases wild record prediction for Spartans this season

Do you think Michigan State football will lose its season-opener to in-state foe Western Michigan? Do you think that's even possible to happen? Well, there's at least one popular Big Ten podcast host who believes it's going to happen. Jon "JR" Rhoades of The Big Ten Huddle released his complete record predictions for every school in the Big Ten this week, and his thoughts for the Spartans were quite surprising. If not, outright wild... Rhoades has the Spartans going 5-7 overall on the year, which in itself isn't jarring or surprising to see. Michigan State has a win total over/under of 5.5 at many sports books so a 5-7 record is certainly in the realm and a common pick for the Spartans this year. But what stood out as wild to me is the fact that he has Michigan State going 5-7 overall with a 4-5 mark in conference play. For those that don't have the Spartans' schedule memorized or handy, Michigan State will play Western Michigan, Boston College and Youngstown State at home in non-conference play. This would mean, that Rhoades is predicting the Spartans to drop two of those three games -- which I'm assuming would be to Western Michigan and Boston College to open the season 0-2. Michigan State is currently an 18.5-point favorite over the Broncos on FanDuel for some perspective of how the betting experts expect the season-opener to play out. Maybe Rhoades didn't look at the Michigan State schedule before putting out this prediction or maybe he's very high on the Broncos entering this season. I even suppose he could be leaning towards an even more massive upset with the Penguins of Youngstown State coming into Spartan Stadium and shocking the world as a FCS school beating a Big Ten squad. Whatever may be the reasoning for this record, I personally will be ready to fire up the Jonathan Smith hot seat chatter if Michigan State were to go 1-2 in non-conference play this season. That isn't even something I'm personally considering in play -- which maybe isn't fair to Western Michigan or Youngstown State. Hopefully, Rhoades is completely wrong with this prediction and we don't see a massive upset to start the season on August 29. If he's right, though, then we are in for a very, very long season... Nearly 10 Spartans named to East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 preseason watch list

Michigan State football was well represented on this year's preseason East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 list. The annual preseason watch list for the East-West Shrine Bowl was released on Monday, with nearly 10 Spartans being included on the list. The East-West Shrine Bowl is a collegiate all-star game after the season for eligible players that can be drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie mini-camp. From Michigan State, here were the eight players that cracked the preseason watch list: This year's East-West Shrine Bowl will be played on January 27 in Frisco, Texas. Odds are, Michigan State will have at least one attendee in this year's event. Michigan State football opens the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FS1.
