YouTube to gauge US users' ages with AI after UK and Australia add age checks

YouTube announced on Tuesday that it will begin to use artificial intelligence to estimate the ages of users in the US, in order to show them age-appropriate content. The rollout of the new feature comes one day after Australia's government announced it would ban children under 16 from using YouTube and less than a week after the UK implemented sweeping age checks on content on social networks. YouTube's AI age verification on its home turf indicates it is putting into place a form of compliance with the Australian and UK requirements, despite its persistent opposition to age-check requirements. 'Over the next few weeks, we'll begin to roll out machine learning to a small set of users in the US to estimate their age, so that teens are treated as teens and adults as adults,' wrote James Beser, director of product management for YouTube Youth, in a blog post titled Extending our built-in protections to more teens on YouTube. YouTube was promised an exemption from Australia's social media ban last year by the then communications minister, but the Australian government said on Monday that the platform would, in fact, be included in the country's ban on children under 16 using social networks. The ban is slated to take effect in December. Google, YouTube's parent company, strenuously advocated against the Australian ban and has threatened to sue to overturn it. On 25 July, the UK's long-awaited Online Safety Act took effect. The law requires social media and other internet platforms to implement safety measures protecting children – preventing them from accessing pornography or content that promotes dangerous behavior – or face large fines. Sign up to TechScape A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives after newsletter promotion By testing the new AI tool in the US – the platform's second largest market after India – YouTube is following the example of other tech companies, which have in some cases followed tightened privacy regulations in the past by implementing stricter mandates for all their users. In the US, California often functions as a de facto tech regulator, both by virtue of playing host to many of Silicon Valley's biggest players and by passing stricter regulations than other states. Like Australia and the UK, some states in the US have passed age verification laws targeting social media sites, though these have not been interpreted as applying to YouTube. When YouTube determines a user is teen or pre-teen, the site will disable personalized advertising, activate digital wellbeing features and put stricter content filters as well as behavioral restrictions into place. YouTube's AI will assess a user's age via multiple behavioral factors, including what kind of videos the user searches for, the categories of videos they watch, and how long the account has been active, per its blog post. 'This technology will allow us to infer a user's age and then use that signal, regardless of the birthday in the account, to deliver our age-appropriate product experiences and protections,' Beser wrote, adding that the company has used the technology in other markets prior to introducing it in the US. If the AI's estimation is incorrect, YouTube says it will allow a user to verify their age with a credit card, a government ID or a selfie. How the Australian government will ensure that under-16s stay away from the world's largest video site, one of the internet's primary destinations for both children and adults, remains an open question. In June, a test of the technology meant to estimate Australian users' ages was 'not guaranteed to be effective'.

National Lottery 36-hour pause will allow ‘biggest tech upgrade' since launch

All draw game sales and prize claims will be paused in shops across the UK from 11pm on Saturday night following the Lotto and Thunderball draws until 'late Monday morning', operator Allwyn said. The National Lottery website and app will also be down over the same period. New National Lottery 'playstations' will be set up (Allwyn/PA) Allwyn advised players to buy draw tickets, check results and claim prizes before 11pm on Saturday and warned that they would not be able to log into their online accounts, buy draw tickets or claim prizes – in-store or online – until Monday. Players will be able to check results until systems go offline and will still be able to buy Scratchcards. They will also be able to see the latest draws and view the full results for the Saturday draws on the National Lottery's YouTube channel. During the pause, Allwyn will transfer and upgrade the National Lottery's gaming and retail systems to new platforms. However, it warned that a 'small proportion' of in-store terminals could experience delays coming back up if certain upgrade processes are interrupted for various reasons. The Czech-based Allwyn group – which took over the 10-year licence to run the lottery from Camelot in February last year – said the systems and in-store terminals powering The National Lottery dated back to 2009, 'before iPads, Uber and Instagram', which now needed to be modernised to deliver on 'ambitious' plans for a National Lottery 'fit for the future'. Allwyn chief executive Andria Vidler said: 'This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver The National Lottery that the UK deserves. 'We're making unprecedented and much-needed changes, which will move us closer to achieving our vision for The National Lottery, restoring its magic and significantly increasing its positive impact on lives across the UK. Allwyn UK chief executive Andria Vidler hailed a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity' to deliver an upgrade (Allwyn/PA) 'These major upgrades will mean short-term disruption for players and our retail partners but they will allow us to deliver on our promise to bring new, exciting games, a better player experience and our commitment to double returns to Good Causes from £30 million to £60 million every week by the end of the 10-year licence.' The switchover has been beset by delays after Allwyn took over the licence, which has held back the launch of new draw-based games. It was unable to switch to a new technology provider after agreeing to extend the contract for the existing supplier, International Games Technology (IGT). IGT had challenged the Gambling Commission's decision to award Allwyn the 10-year licence in court, but later dropped the legal action. Allwyn has previously admitted that delays to the new games it had hoped to introduce in 2024 will hold back the amount of money it can give to good causes in the early part of its 10-year licence. But the group remained committed to its long-term goal to double money for good causes, despite falling short of early targets.

Nintendo Direct announced for Thursday but don't expect Metroid Prime 4

After weeks of rumours, Nintendo has officially confirmed a Direct presentation for this week, but it's not quite what fans were hoping for. A Nintendo Direct presentation for this week looked inevitable, between leaked game announcements and the word of various insiders, but now it's been officially confirmed. As announced on X, a Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase will take place on Thursday, July 31 at 2pm UK time and 3pm CET in Europe. It will be available to stream on YouTube. The showcase will span 'roughly' 25 minutes and feature 'information on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games from our publishing partners'. In other words, don't expect any updates on first-party Nintendo games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby Air Riders, or Splatoon Raiders. This might be disappointing for some, especially those hoping for a Metroid Prime 4 release date, but there are many unanswered questions regarding the Switch 2's third party support. More Trending We still don't have release dates for Elden Ring or Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the console, while Ubisoft has heavily hinted a port of Assassin's Creed Shadows is on the way. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. A number of Microsoft published games are also rumoured for Nintendo's system, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator. A PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 port of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 has been rumoured for some time as well. Beyond those, it's highly likely some indie titles will get shown. This might be where we get an official release date for Hades 2, following its launch in early access, or ports of UFO 50 and Blue Prince. As for what we know is coming this year from third parties, Star Wars Outlaws, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Little Nightmares 3 and Borderlands 4 are all set to launch this year on Switch 2. 007 First Light is also coming to the console, but not until 2026.
