Inverness weightlifter: 'How I lost 3 stone and found my power again after a break-up'

Inverness weightlifter: 'How I lost 3 stone and found my power again after a break-up'

Inverness weightlifter Sara Boussaikouk is excited.
I speak to her as she trains in the gym at Inverness Leisure, dragging massive weights around and obligingly posing for photos in between lifts.
Today is a 'light day', I'm reliably informed. It doesn't look anything of the sort to me, but I'll take her word for it.
Sara, 35, has recently been selected to compete at the prestigious Women's Weightlifting Grand Prix in Austria.
She trains four times a week for at least two hours at a time. She can lift the equivalent of a washing machine.
But just a few years ago, she was over three stone heavier and desperately unhappy after coming out of a bad relationship.
Sara says the change has been 'like night and day'.
And now, she is laser-focussed on getting to Austria and competing with the best in the world.
By day, Sara sits at her desk in her Inverness home and looks after the social media feeds and website of East Lothian Council.
But after work – and sometimes before work, or in between, or on days off – she spends most of her time at the gym.
She has only been weightlifting for about four years – it's perhaps not an obvious choice of hobby for a 30-something woman.
So how did she end up among the weights?
Sara said: 'I'd had a really bad few years with an unhappy relationship.
'I needed to do something – literally anything to get out of the house.'
In 2021, just as gyms were reopening after Covid, Inverness Leisure announced an Olympic weightlifting class and Sara felt it was for her.
She said: 'I came to the first class and I loved it – I was just obsessed with it.'
Soon, Sara was starting to take the challenge more seriously.
In the past, she had gone to the gym, taken part in roller derbies – even having a go at gymnastics and ice skating growing up.
But she says she was never really good at anything – until weightlifting came along, that is.
She said: 'I've always had an issue with my hip and I'm extremely clumsy – so it's a miracle that I'm doing this.
'This has been the first thing that I've been able to do and I've been good at.'
Alongside the two-hour sessions four times a week, Sara also tries to follow a high-protein diet.
She can burn 3,000 to 3,500 calories in a single training session and needs 200g of protein a day. An average steak has 25g of protein.
Sara said: 'It's just chicken and protein shakes constantly.
'Weightlifting is like a second full time job at the moment – it's ridiculous.'
Sara took a break from weightlifting a couple of years ago and her weight increased to over 17 stone.
When she came back, she knew she had to do something about it.
A 2,000 calorie a day 'diet' helped her lose almost exactly three stone, bringing her in just over 14 stone.
She is aiming to lose another 9lb – to drop a category in weightlifting competitions.
Sara said: 'I'm 100% happier now. It gives me an outlet and a voice that I didn't have before.
'It gives me a way to have some power again and build some confidence and meet new people. All my closest friends come here now.
'It's completely night and day – I don't know what I would have if I hadn't found it.'
Sara also gets fulfilment from coaching younger hopefuls at Highland Weightlifting Club. These days, many of her pupils are girls.
She says she inspired by three women in her life – her mum Fiona Boussaikouk, her sister Leila Daubney and her four-year-old niece Melody.
Sara is now aiming to get to the Women's Grand Prix in Wels in Austria in August.
She applied for a place and qualified and was chosen to represent Scotland in the Masters class. That's for lifters who have turned 35 – which Sara only did a month or so ago.
She can now lift 57kg in the snatch – that's the weight of a very large Giant Pacific Octopus, or 10 domestic cats, if that helps visualise it.
And in the clean and jerk, she lifts 76kg – basically a washing machine.
She said: 'I want to lift as heavy as possible for as long as I can.'
She is raising funds to help pay for the costs of the trip.
If everything goes to plan, she'll be attending the event with 15 other lifters from across Scotland. The only other Highlands and Islands competitor she knows of is from Skye.
Despite already having 15 competitions under her weightlifting belt, and already having a place at the Scottish Classic later in the year, Sara isn't full of confidence for Austria.
She said: 'I'm bricking it – I'm absolutely terrified.'

Kate serves up royal glamour at Wimbledon for women's final

Kate, who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, will present the trophy on Centre Court to the winner of the match between Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek on Saturday. Ahead of the final, the princess, wearing a white belted jacket and pleated skirt, met the winner of the ladies' wheelchair final, Wang Ziying. Accompanied by All England Club chairwoman Deborah Jevans, she also met 12-year-old Sophie Kneen, who is due to perform the coin toss at the ladies' final, and eight-year-old Lydia Lowe, who did the same at the ladies' wheelchair final. Kate, who donned a bow-shaped brooch in the Wimbledon colours of purple and green, also spoke with Jefferson Iweh, a ticket sales operator; Bob Flint, an honorary steward; and Wimbledon foundation host Shaniah Williams. Last year, the princess presented the Wimbledon men's final trophy to Carlos Alcaraz, in her second public engagement since she announced her cancer diagnosis. The Princess of Wales's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, were seen in the Royal Box on Monday, with the Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester also in attendance. The Queen told tennis star Novak Djokovic that she was keeping her 'fingers crossed' as she visited Wimbledon on Wednesday. The Princess Royal's son Peter Phillips attended the championships on Wednesday, with Hugh Grant and former prime minister Sir John Major also in the Royal Box. Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah, former footballer Ian Wright and Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins were among the notable names to attend a hot day at Wimbledon on Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to peak at around 30C and fall short of a record for a women's singles final day, with 31.2C having been recorded on the day of the 1976 final between Chris Evert and Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: 'There will be blue skies at Wimbledon throughout the day, so it will feel hot, with very high UV levels and a light wind. 'There might be a little bit more cloud around tomorrow, making it a degree lower.' The men's singles semi-final on Friday between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz was stopped twice in less than five minutes because of crowd emergencies, amid temperatures of 32C on Centre Court. Three fans also needed attention on Centre Court on Thursday in similarly hot conditions. The men's singles final on Sunday, with highs of 29C predicted, is unlikely to break the record of the warmest closing day on record of 34.1C recorded on July 3 1976. The extreme heat during the 1976 tournament prompted organisers to allow umpires to remove their jackets. Wimbledon has said the heat rule will apply for all singles events for players, which allows for a 10-minute break when the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is at or above 30.1C. The rule will apply after the second set for all best-of-three-set matches, and after the third set for all best-of-five-set matches. Players may leave the court during the break, but they may not receive coaching or medical treatment.

Royals, celebrities and sportspeople watched the action unfold from Centre Court's Royal Box. The Princess of Wales is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and delighted fans with her attendance on Saturday. The 74-seater box has been in existence for more than a hundred years and you can only get in there by invitation. Guests are invited by the chairperson of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. The British royal family appear frequently as well as other heads of states like presidents and prime ministers. Sports people such as Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah were pictured on Saturday as well as singers like Pixie Lott and model and actress Cara Delevigne. But one face that would have been of particular interest to Rangers fans is their new vice-chairman Paraag Marathe who was amongst the high rollers in the box. Marathe is the chairman of 49ers Enterprises - the commercial arm of the NFL giants San Francisco 49ers. They are part of the US consortium along with private health tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, which completed a takeover of Rangers this summer. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked Marathe is also the chairman of Premier League new boys Leeds United. He was there with his wife Jennifer. Last Saturday Rangers hero Graeme Souness was spotted in the Royal Box in the company with his wife Karen. Souness was given a warm welcome as he was introduced alongside other football figures such Jamie Redknapp and Graeme Le Saux - two men who both played under him - and England 1966 World Cup hero Geoff Hurst.
