Ex-Fox News host Jeanine Pirro - ridiculed on SNL - is new Attorney for the District of Columbia

Daily Mail2 days ago
Another former longtime staple presence of the Fox News Channel has officially joined the Trump administration.
Judge Jeanine Pirro was confirmed as the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia by the U.S. Senate on Saturday evening with a vote of 50-45.
Pirro was President Donald Trump 's second pick for the role, and has been serving in the position on an interim basis since May.
The president's initial selection for the post was Ed Martin, a longtime conservative activist, podcast host, and recent defender of January 6th rioters. Martin failed to garner enough support from enough Senate Republicans to proceed with his conformation.
Pirro's own confirmation process was not without hurdles. She had to be voted out of the Judiciary Committee twice. Democrats walked out of a committee hearing two weeks ago, claiming that Republicans improperly rushed the confirmation process. The walkout which invalidated the initial committee vote.
During a swearing-in ceremony for the Judge, which took place in the Oval Office back in May, Trump noted that 'Over five decades, Jeanine Pirro, known by millions as Judge Jeanine, has devoted her life to the pursuit of justice, the defense of freedom and the fair, equal and impartial rule of law.'
Trump also referred back to Pirro's early career as a district attorney in Westchester County, New York.
'And she went after real criminals, not fake criminals, like we seem to do today, nowadays,' the president added back in May.
Pirro will now formally serve in a unique position, overseeing both federal crimes, and serious crimes committed in Washington, D.C.
Her new jurisdiction encompasses the U.S. Congress, as well as the headquarters of most government agencies, which makes her role one of the most influential in the country. Cases brought before her division may include ones of national security and public corruption, as well as violent crimes and drug trafficking.
Republicans, including Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, praised Trump's selection of Pirro for the role, while doing their best to fend off attacks on Pirro from their Democrat counterparts.
'You may hear my Democrat colleagues criticize Ms. Pirro for some of her colorful remarks during her time as a TV personality,' Grassley, stated on the Senate floor ahead of Saturday's vote, adding that 'yes, she has a larger-than-life personality.'
However, Grassley added that, 'she has [a] decades [long] distinguished record as a prosecutor and judge. D.C. is fortunate that the president nominated her to serve as its U.S. attorney. Her job in the interim role, where she is stationed now, has been heralded.'
Democrats framed Pirro as 'an election denialist, recklessly peddling President Trump's Big Lie.' Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said that Pirro continued to push claims about the 2020 election, 'despite even her own Fox News producers and executives warning her to reel it in.'
Fox Corp, the parent company of Fox News, is still locked in a legal battle with voting machine technology company Smartmatic, and Pirro is among the list of Fox personalities accused of spreading false claims about the 2020 election.
Pirro's comments during her Fox News tenure also captured the attention of writers at the comedy show 'Saturday Night Live'. There, Pirro was played by Cecily Strong. In her portrayals of the Fox News personality, Strong frequently praised Trump, and also carried and drank alcohol during her imitations of Pirro.
After Saturday's confirmation vote, Pirro wrote on social media site X that she was 'blessed to have received a Senate confirmation vote this evening of 50 to 45 to be the United States attorney for the District of Columbia the largest United States Attorney's Office in the country.'
'Thank you to those senators who supported my confirmation and DC- get ready for a real crime fighter,' Pirro added in her X post.

UK's ex-Ambassador trashes Donald Trump in public roasting after being forced to quit

Lord Kim Darroch was forced to quit during Trump's first term after he described his administration as "inept" - and if anything he's more scathing in his latest assessment The UK's former ambassador to the US has trashed Donald Trump in a public roasting - describing the President as acting like a "medieval King". ‌ Lord Kim Darroch accused the American leader of turning the "Oval Office into a reality TV set". ‌ The former diplomat was forced to quit his role in 2019 during Mr Trump's first term after leaked briefings showed him describing the President's government as "dysfunctional", "inept" and "divided". ‌ Speaking to broadcaster Iain Dale at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Lord Darroch defended the letter, which he said was a result of then prime minister David Cameron urging him to be honest and direct. ‌ He told the audience in Scotland's capital that his comments were borne out by Mr Trump's actions as president. The former ambassador said Mr Trump was ultimately an unpredictable leader as he cited the numerous firings of top officials by the president, the various changes to his tariff policies and the recent move to place nuclear submarines near Russia. "He's sort of like a medieval king - that sort of capricious decision-making - than he is like a modern politician where consistency is seen as important," he said. ‌ "He doesn't think that's important at all. He thinks that every day is a fresh day. You're basically battling with media. "You're battling with your opponents. If it suits you today to reverse something you did last week, just do it. "If you look at tariffs, that's a perfect example of unpredictability of capriciousness." ‌ Lord Darroch suggested that Mr Trump's style stemmed from his time on the US version of The Apprentice. " Donald Trump was made by reality TV," he said, describing him as "the American version of Alan Sugar". He added: "He learned a lot about how to present himself from reality TV. ‌ "I think he's now literally turned the Oval Office into a reality TV set." During his discussion with Mr Dale, the former diplomat praised the Prime Minister's handling of foreign policy, including his relationship with the US President. He told the broadcaster: "So far, against a lot of predictions, Keir Starmer has proved himself really quite an adept Trump whisperer. ‌ "He's done some clever things, including phoning Trump up after the assassination attempt - that was a clever thing to do, going to see him to sort of kiss the ring before the election." The peer said the Labour leader had been better on foreign policy than domestic policy, but warned the PM there were "not many votes in foreign policy". Asked about defence, Lord Darroch suggested the UK would not be able to cope with a Russian invasion, although he said the chances of that were low. "The truth is I don't think we are close," he said. "I do think it's less distant than it was five years ago. "I do think the important point really is that we are woefully underprepared." Lord Darroch has been outspoken in his criticism of Mr Trump since he was forced to quit his stateside role. Mr Trump had criticised him as as a "stupid guy" and a "pompous fool".

Trump soars to new HEIGHTS and climbs roof for bird's eye view of White House makeover

President Donald Trump appeared at an unusual spot on Tuesday - the West Wing roof - as he hinted there could be more White House renovations up his sleeve. The president brought an entourage with him and stepped outside the White House residence onto the roof of the Palm Room and the press briefing room - a single-story portion of the West Wing that overlooks the newly revamped Rose Garden. 'Sir, why are you on the roof?' a reporter yelled to the president. 'Mr. President, what are you doing up there?' another journalist asked. Trump gave his trademark fist pump. 'Taking a little walk,' he replied. He noted that the planned White House ballroom would be on the other side of the residence, as there are plans to add 90,000 square feet to the current East Wing, where first lady Melania Trump has her offices. He then hinted that he could add something on top of where he was standing, making a domed gesture with his hands. 'Something beautiful,' he said. 'More ways to spend my money. We'll show you. It's just another way to spend my money for the country.' President Donald Trump is seen shouting to reporters from the roof of the West Wing over where the White House press briefing room is located 'Anything I do is financed by me so you don't have to worry, it's contributed,' he continued. 'Just like my salary is contributed but nobody ever mentions that.' Trump continued his tour and then was asked about his plans for the West Wing roof yet again. He joked that he was building 'nuclear missiles' on the roof. He then stepped back into the residence. Trump's appearance on the roof comes after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Thursday that the ballroom project was a go. Construction on the East Wing will begin in September, she said, with the expected cost to be around $200 million. Trump said he would finance all or part of the ballroom project, with the rest given by donors. The Rose Garden project is also coming to a close. Asked by the Daily Mail on Sunday how he thought it turned out, Trump said the project had received 'great reviews.' 'Yeah, we're getting great reviews of the Rose Garden and we had to do it,' the president said. 'When we had a press conference you'd sink into the mud. It was grass and it was very wet, always wet and damp and wet, and if it rained it would take three, four, five days to dry out and we couldn't use it really for the intended purpose,' he continued. The president took out the Rose Garden's grassy center, making it more patio-like instead. 'And it's a beautiful white stone and it's a stone that's the same color as the White House itself,' Trump said. 'And because it's very white it's going to reflect the heat and it's not going to be very hot.' The patio's drainage system resembles the American flag and the presidential seal has been stamped in the corners of the patio. Since taking office in January, Trump has also erected two large American flags on the White House campus, on both the North and South Lawn.

‘Sir, why are you on the roof?' Trump grabs birdseye view to survey $200M White House ballroom plans

Right smack dab in the middle of Washington, Donald Trump has found a place that's trouble proof. The 47th president on Tuesday climbed way up to the top of the stairs for an unannounced visit to the roof of the White House briefing room so he could survey the site of the massive ballroom addition which he announced last week. Reporters on site at the complex got word that Trump might be making an appearance at approximately 9:40 am, and after approximately an hour of waiting while Secret Service took various security precautions (including the rare placement of counter-snipers atop the West Wing), Trump exited a door leading from the State Dining Room to the roof of the briefing room at 10:45 am. Accompanied by James McCrery, the architect who has been engaged to design what Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described last week as 'a much-needed and exquisite addition' of 'innately designed and carefully crafted space' in the form of a 90,000 square foot ballroom attached to the East Wing of the building, Trump walked back and forth on the roof of the press workspace and appeared to be looking at the future site of the ballroom as well as the roof of the West Wing itself. When The Independent asked why he was on the roof of the White House, Trump quipped that he was 'taking a little walk' and mentioned the 'ballroom on the other side.' 'Just another way to spend my money for this country,' Trump said. 'Anything I do is financed by me.' Crews are scheduled to break ground on the project in September. It is expected to cost upwards of $200 million, though the president claims it will be paid for by him and as-yet unnamed donors rather than by taxpayers. According to the White House, the new addition would have a seating capacity of 650 — approximately three times the space available in the East Room, which is currently the largest room available on the 18 acre complex. This has meant that larger events such as state dinners have been held in tents constructed on the South Lawn in recent years. The new event facility will be built on the site of the White House's East Wing, which currently stands between the Executive Residence and Treasury Department headquarters. First built in 1902 and enlarged with a second floor four decades later, it houses offices for First Lady Melania Trump and her staff, the White House Military Office, the White House Visitor Office, and other White House support functions. Leavitt said those offices would be temporarily relocated during the construction. According to Leavitt, the East Wing will be 'heavily changed and reconstructed' once the new ballroom is completed. An interior rendering of the ballroom provided by the White House reveals a massive hall with ornate ceilings and chandeliers, replete with gold leaf throughout. The image is reminiscent of the ballroom which Trump had built on the grounds of Mar-a-Lago, the historic 1920s-era Palm Beach mansion that is both a private club run by his family's eponymous hotel and real estate company and his primary residence. Since returning to the White House for his second term in January, Trump has sought to update the appearance of the historic facility to make it more to his liking. He enlisted a cabinetmaker he has previously employed at Mar-a-Lago, who he referred to as his 'gold guy,' to give multiple surfaces in the Oval Office his own Midas touch, leaving the iconic room adorned with ostentatious splashes of pure gold leaf paint in places where there was no such ornamentation before. He has also ordered the iconic Kennedy Rose Garden to be converted into a patio much like the one on which he entertains guests at his Florida social club. The rose bushes that have ringed the area since the Kennedy administration remain, but the grass surface that has been the site of numerous events just outside of the Oval Office has been replaced with paving stones.
