Bears coach Ben Johnson purchased a $3.25M mansion in Lake Forest earlier this year
Johnson held a variety of assistant coaching roles for the Detroit Lions for six years — including his final three years as offensive coordinator — before the Bears hired him on Jan. 21. Through an opaque land trust that masks their identities, Johnson and his wife bought their new house in Lake Forest, which was built in 2013 and has five full bathrooms, three half bathrooms, four fireplaces, white oak hardwood floors, 10-foot ceilings on all floors, four-piece moldings, radiant heat floors in every full bathroom and a spiral staircase.
Other features include an office with custom walnut paneling and built-in Burmeister shelving, French doors and a kitchen with quartz countertops, custom Burmeister soft-close cabinetry, Wolf double ovens, a Wolf six-burner cooktop, a 48-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, two Miele dishwashers, a walk-in pantry and work area and a large island that contains a quartz countertop, a breakfast bar that seats four and a Shaws farmhouse-style prep sink.
The mansion also has a mud room and a lower level with radiant heat flooring, an exercise room, a theater room with a retractable screen and a rec room with a fireplace and a wood bar. On the second floor, the primary bedroom suite has a vaulted ceiling, a walk-in closet with an island and a primary bathroom with radiant heat flooring and a double vanity. Outdoor features include a cedar shake roof, copper gutters and downspouts, a three-car garage with radiant heat floors, a lighted sport court, a brick fireplace and a bluestone patio with a built-in Fisher & Paykel grill with separate gas burners.
The mansion sits on a 2.45-acre property. The sellers first listed it in February for $3.35 million, and went under contract with the Johnsons just five days later.
Ellen Chukerman of Compass represented the Johnsons in their purchase. She declined to comment on the deal.
The mansion had a $50,159 property tax bill in the 2023 tax year.
As Elite Street first reported, the Johnsons on July 19 listed their four-bedroom, 3,940-square-foot house in Plymouth, Mich. for $1.1 million, and the home currently has a contract pending.
Johnson's predecessor as the Bears' permanent head coach, Matt Eberflus, continues to own a seven-bedroom, 11,310-square-foot lakefront mansion in Lake Bluff that he purchased in 2022 for $3.9 million. Eberflus now is the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

Houston Texans star suffers potential severe injury, carted off field at training camp
Houston Texans star suffers potential severe injury, carted off field at training camp originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Texans are gearing up to begin preseason play on Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings. And while there is a lot of excitement to get games started for the 2025 season, the Texans will be doing it without one of their top defenders. New Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered an injury in Thursday's training camp practice, which led to him being carted off the field. "CJ Gardner Johnson was carted off," ESPN Texans reporter DJ Bien-Aime reports. "He did not walk to the sidelines or anything. He was carted off from the spot he was injured." It sounds as if this was serious, which means Houston could be in the market for a new safety if Gardner-Johnson is going to miss significant time. J&J signs $2bn incumbency deal at CDMO Fujifilm's new hub
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will invest $2bn into a new drug manufacturing facility in North Carolina, US, as the pharma giant begins to outline how it will spread a $55bn pot announced earlier this year to boost domestic manufacturing. The investment arrives via a ten-year deal with contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) Fujifilm Biotechnologies. The drugmaker has outlaid more than $2bn over the period for a 160,000ft² manufacturing facility at Fujifilm's new manufacturing hub in Holly Springs, North Carolina. J&J did not reveal what it would use the new facility for and provided little information on timelines, although Fujifilm has said separately that the Holly Springs hub will operate on large-scale cell culture manufacturing of bulk drug substances. Fujifilm hopes for the hub to become operational in 2025 and has so far injected $3.2bn into the site. Regeneron is also set to become an incumbent of the hub, agreeing a $3bn deal – similarly lasting ten years – with Fujifilm in April 2025. In March 2025, J&J announced it would invest $55bn to bolster US manufacturing operations. This strategy, which includes the building of four new manufacturing sites, comes amid an ongoing push by US President Donald Trump for the country to become less reliant on pharmaceutical imports from overseas countries. A main way to accomplish this is via increased onshoring of drug manufacturing, and J&J has become just one of many pharma companies to redirect investment amid tariff-mediated pressure from the president. Roche outlaid a similar amount to J&J, planning $50bn worth of investment in the US. Eli Lilly and AstraZeneca have also committed to billion-dollar spending to bolster manufacturing in the US. J&J has plans beyond just the Holly Springs facility, saying it will share 'plans for advanced manufacturing facilities in the US, as well as the expansion of current US manufacturing' in the coming months. The drugmaker has already started constructing a facility in Wilson, around 85km east of Holly Springs, North Carolina. The site, which will manufacture biologics, was announced by J&J with a $2bn investment in October 2024. J&J's CEO Joaquin Duato said: 'J&J has more manufacturing facilities in the US than in any other country, and we continue to strengthen our presence here. 'With the recent signing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, we continue to expand our investment in the US to lead the next era of healthcare innovation.' Bears TE Colston Loveland poised to follow growth arc of Lions' 1,615-yard, 17-TD star
Bears TE Colston Loveland poised to follow growth arc of Lions' 1,615-yard, 17-TD star originally appeared on The Sporting News When Ben Johnson was hired as the Chicago Bears' head coach, it was probably the offensive players who got the most excited. They'd seen firsthand how the Detroit Lions offense thrived with him as their coordinator. And among those offensive players, the rookies are the ones really buzzing about the season ahead. Starting their NFL careers under Johnson feels like a huge opportunity, with results likely to go beyond what they're expecting. One rookie who looks set for a big growth leap is tight end Colston Loveland. On Thursday, ESPN's Courtney Cronin highlighted Loveland's potential by comparing him to Sam LaPorta, Johnson's standout tight end with the Lions. She noted, "As a rookie, LaPorta was targeted 120 times (89 catches, 889 yards) and turned in the second-most touchdowns ever by a rookie tight end (10)." "LaPorta was second on the Lions in receiving in 2023 and the team's third-leading receiver in 2024," Cronin added. Johnson will expect similar numbers from Loveland. This blueprint gives the tight end a clear path to learn and make a comparable impact in Chicago under Johnson's system. Under Johnson's watch as offensive coordinator, LaPorta has recorded 1,615 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons. LaPorta has been clear about how much he'll miss his offensive coordinator in Detroit. In March, during an appearance on the "Up & Adams" show, he said, "He was one of the big reasons they brought me into the Lions. I have nothing but respect for him, but come Sunday afternoons this fall, there will be friends turned to enemies." "It hurts, of course," LaPorta added. "You spend a lot of time with these people, invest a lot of energy and effort and hard work together." Now the Bears HC has another rookie to nurture. Under Johnson, Colston Loveland will have to prove why the Bears made him their 10th pick. Johnson's scheme is flexible and he also has a veteran like Cole Kmet alongside him, so his development will be quick.
