Texas A&M athletic director comments on CFP's influence on SEC scheduling
After months and months of lengthy discussions regarding the state of the College Football Playoff and how the Southeastern Conference will handle conference scheduling moving forward, Texas A&M's athletic director discussed his thoughts on the impending decisions.
ESPN senior writer Heather Dinich reported that the Aggies' athletic director Trev Alberts gave his thoughts on the potential expansion of the CFP on Tuesday afternoon and how it affects the SEC scheduling discussions as a whole.
"Are we going to four autobids? Are we not? We need some answers... Nine games makes sense for a lot of different reasons, but it doesn't make sense for us if we're not guaranteed to be protected."
According to Dinich, the second-year athletic director for Texas A&M believes that the interest in conference representatives to extend league play to eight games instead of nine hinges upon the future of the CFP.
As reported by multiple outlets last week, the College Football Playoff has now adopted a straight-seeding concept, effective immediately starting this season.
Of course, the rules, regulations and concepts are being changed and new ones are being instated every single day. As Alberts stated in his discussions with Dinich, the commissions for both the CFP and the SEC need to determine what they want to do with scheduling and how they want it to look soon.

Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith believes offense is going to prove doubters wrong

It's no secret that Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith can do some superhuman things on a football field. He splashed on the scene last season as a freshman, having one of the best freshman seasons a receiver has ever had. As good as Smith was, however, as a receiver, he needed some help to get his catches, yards, and highlight plays that came early and often. The line had to block, and quarterback Will Howard had to be able to put the ball in the right spot on time. Over 1,300 yards and a College Football Playoff national championship later, it's safe to say all of that occurred in 2024. Now that the offense has to usher in a new quarterback, the offensive line has some pieces to replace, and two NFL running backs are no longer helping things out, and the consensus is that the OSU offense won't be nearly as good in 2025. According to Smith, however, not so fast. When speaking with Adam King of the CBS affiliate WBNS 10TV in Columbus, he had a warning for opposing defenses this fall. "I just can't wait until the season starts. We're definitely gonna put on a show," Smith said. "A lot of people are doubting us, I've been seeing on Twitter and social media. So I can't wait to prove a lot of people wrong this year." There's more than one way to move the football, and you have to believe this year's Ohio State team will do it differently than last season. With a former wide receiver (Brian Hartline) as Offensive Coordinator, a quarterback who isn't as mobile, and a running back room that will need to retool, you have to believe the passing game might be a priority in 2025. We'll see, but that has to have Smith excited and ready to go. Hopefully, his teammates can pull their weight and make him look prophetic. Nick Saban Predicted to Return to Coaching at Alabama's Biggest Rival

Nick Saban Predicted to Return to Coaching at Alabama's Biggest Rival originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy dropped a bombshell at SEC Media Days on Monday, hinting Nick Saban might want to return to coaching. That leads everyone to wonder where the legendary leader's road would lead him. On3 analyst Andy Staples believes it might be the Auburn Tigers. Advertisement "I don't think it's that difficult to find a couple of places that he would really enjoy. But if I finish the sentence, this media days will end right here," ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum said. "I think I know this school. I've already denied this story, but I think I know the school where he could be going." Staples and his co-host, Ari Wasserman, read between the lines of Finebaum's comments on "Andy & Ari On3." ESPN analyst Nick Saban© Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images "They're obviously talking about Auburn, aren't they?" Staples said. "They're implying Auburn. Auburn, they're mad at Hugh Freeze for playing too much golf, so they want Nick Saban to stop playing golf and come back. ... I think he could win there. I think they'd rally together to give him what he needed to win." Advertisement Staples' co-host, Ari Wasserman, pushed back, saying, "I don't buy (that). I think I would buy, like, West Virginia or Toledo before I would buy that." Staples believes Saban would demand a certain level of infrastructure — one that Auburn could provide — in order to return to the sidelines. Wasserman made another strong point against Saban joining his former bitter rivals. "Alabama fans would rightfully hate him, right? Like, why would you do that?" Wasserman said. "It makes no sense." This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 14, 2025, where it first appeared.

Iowa baseball pitcher Anthony Watts selected by Cardinals in MLB Draft

As the third Iowa baseball player chosen in the 2025 MLB draft following teammates Cade Obermueller, Daniel Wright, and Aaron Savary, Hawkeyes pitcher Anthony Watts has been selected by the St. Louis Cardinals. Just 15 spots after the Cleveland Guardians selected Savary in the 13th round, St. Louis used the No. 420 overall pick to select Watts in the 14th round on Monday from Atlanta, GA. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound right-handed native of Clive, Iowa, was primarily used as a relief pitcher out of the Hawkeyes' bullpen this past spring, posting a 4-4 record with a 4.72 ERA in 40 innings through 24 appearances. Watts also finished the season with 45 strikeouts, a career-low 19 base-on-balls, 27 hits allowed, and two saves. Watts' selection now increases the number of Hawkeye players drafted under head coach Rick Heller to 37. Watts joined the program before the 2023-24 campaign following one season with Creighton, which gives him one year of NCAA eligibility remaining. Similar to Savary, does not list an approximate pick value for Watts. However, he could elect to return to the Hawkeyes for a senior season by not signing with the Cardinals. If Watts were to sign a professional contract with St. Louis, he would finish his three-year college baseball career with an 8-8 record and a 4.33 ERA on 129 innings pitched through 11 starts in 59 appearances to go along with 129 strikeouts and three games saved.
