PETALING JAYA : National men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik stayed on course for a second consecutive title by advancing to the Thailand Open final today.
The world No 5 duo defeated Thailand's Kittinupong Kedren and Dechapol Puavaranukroh 21-17, 21-13 in just 37 minutes, overcoming a vocal home crowd with a confident performance.
This is their third win over the world No 16 Thai pair in as many BWF meetings.
Aaron and Wooi Yik will face the winners of the semifinal clash between Indonesia's top pair, Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto, and Denmark's William Kryger Boe-Christian Faust Kjaer in tomorrow's final.
The champions will receive US$37,525 (RM161,130), while the runners-up will earn US$18,050 (RM77,500).
Aaron and Wooi Yik, who were recently named Malaysia's 'Sportsmen of the Year', are aiming to end a 16-year title drought for Malaysia in the men's doubles at the Thailand Open.
The last Malaysian winners were Chan Peng Soon and Lim Khim Wah in 2009. They are the only Malaysian pair to claim the title since the tournament began in 1984.
A win tomorrow would also mark Aaron-Wooi Yik's second title of the season, following their victory at the Badminton Asia Championships in Zhejiang, China, last month.
It would also be a memorable personal milestone as they have never won more than one title in a single year before.

Malaysian billionaire Ong Beng Seng to plead guilty in Singapore ex-transport minister Iswaran's corruption case on July 3

SINGAPORE, June 11 — Billionaire hotelier Ong Beng Seng will plead guilty on July 3 in a high-profile graft case linked to Singapore's former transport minister S. Iswaran. The Straits Times reported that the 79-year-old tycoon's plea date was confirmed following a pre-trial conference in Singapore yesterday. His plea was initially slated for April 2 but was delayed after his lawyers requested more time to obtain medical reports. Ong, best known for bringing Formula One to Singapore in 2008, faces two charges: abetting a public servant to obtain gifts and abetting the obstruction of justice. He was charged on October 4, 2024. According to court documents, Ong had allegedly arranged for Iswaran to fly on his private jet from Singapore to Doha in December 2022 — a flight valued at US$7,700 (RM32,615). He also covered a one-night stay for Iswaran at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha, worth S$4,737.63, and a business-class return flight to Singapore valued at S$5,700. Ong is accused of tipping off Iswaran that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) had seized the flight manifest for the trip, prompting the then-minister to ask Ong to retroactively bill him to avoid scrutiny. This led to Ong being charged with the abetment of obstruction of justice. Ong's links to Iswaran go back nearly two decades. In the mid-2000s, the two men worked together to convince then-Formula One Group chief executive Bernie Ecclestone to bring the sport's first-ever night race to Singapore. Iswaran served as chairman of the F1 steering committee and was the Singapore government's chief negotiator on related matters with Singapore GP. Iswaran, 62, was sentenced to 12 months in jail on October 3, 2024, after pleading guilty to five charges, including receiving gifts from Ong and David Lum Kok Seng, managing director of Lum Chang Holdings. He was placed on the Home Detention Scheme in February 2025 and completed his sentence on June 6. Ong has since announced plans to step down as managing director of Hotel Properties Limited, the company he founded.

Vietnam coach concedes Malaysia's strength as Harimau Malaya end 11 year drought with 4-0 thrashing

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski has attributed his players' commitment as the key to their success in crushing Vietnam 4-0 in their second AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers Group match at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here last night. The Australian coach, speaking at a post-match press conference, said it also proved the effectiveness of the training his players underwent within a short period. 'In the first half, we created a good chance, while the players showed their discipline in the second half. I praise their commitment, and they deserve the win,' he said. Cklamovski also cautioned his players not to get carried away by tonight's victory and to remain focused on the Asian Cup qualifiers, admitting there was still room for improvement ahead of the next match. Meanwhile, Vietnam coach Kim Sang Sik conceded to the strength of the Harimau Malaya squad this time, but believed his team still had a chance to seek revenge in the return leg. 'This game, I felt Malaysia was very strong, stronger than before. We had expected their performance to be better than before. 'First half, we did as planned, but in the second half, we lost two defenders, thus affecting our defence,' he said. Malaysia thrash Vietnam 4-0 in historic Asian Cup qualifier win, first victory in 11 years over rivals

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The national football team walked away winners for the first time in 11 years against Vietnam after beating them 4-0 in the second 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifying match at Bukit Jalil National Stadium here last night. Sporting a lineup of new heritage players, Peter Cklamovski's still had to spend the first half trying to get on the same wavelength and struggled to find gaps in Vietnam's defence. Their aggressive play did nearly result in a goal in the 35th minute when Dion Cools sent a blistering shot from outside the penalty box that unfortunately hit the right goalpost. The Harimau Malaya squad managed to get into gear in the second half, and new heritage player Joao Figueiredo scored in the 49th minute when his shot deflected off Vietnamese keeper Nguyen Filip into the net to make it 1-0 in favour of the hosts. Fellow heritage player Rodrigo Holgado kept the momentum up and scored from inside the penalty box 10 minutes later, and the Malaysians, sensing that the match had truly shifted in their favour, continued to press their opponents and were rewarded with a 67th minute goal by Corbin Ong. Finally, Cools made up for his missed shot at goal in the first half with a header in the 89th minute, capping a truly amazing performance for the team. The 4-0 victory means that Malaysia has taken the lead in Group F with six points, while Vietnam is now second with three points. Laos is third, also with three points, courtesy of their 2-1 win over Nepal in the other Group F qualifer in Laos and Nepal is last with no points. Malaysia will travel to Laos on Oct 9 for their third Group F match. — Bernama
