Channel 4 sparks fury after using Southport killer's mugshot in 'sick' advert as viewers beg 'please stop this!'

Daily Mail03-06-2025
Channel 4 has sparked fury after using the Southport killer's mugshot in a controversial advert.
Recently, an ad on Facebook for the broadcaster's new shows featured a photograph of Axel Rudakubana and said: 'More of the shows you love, more of the shows you will love. Stream now on Channel 4.'
The killer was convicted for the murders of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancome, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, at a Taylor Swift dance class in Southport in July 2024, as well as the attempted murder of 10 others.
He was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years in January.
The advert contained a link to a news special about the case, titled Southport Killer Sentenced, according to The Sun.

Recently, an ad on Facebook for the broadcaster's new shows featured a photograph of Axel Rudakubana (pictured) and said: 'More of the shows you love ❤, more of the shows you will love. Stream now on Channel 4.'
Patrick Hurley, who is a Labour MP for Southport, took to social media to express his outrage and posted on X: 'I'm really disappointed to see @Channel4 actively promote this image to Southport residents on Facebook, by buying ads targeting them.
'Please stop this, @Channel 4.
'And as for the text in the post - 'More of the shows you love, more of the shows you will love. Stream now on Channel 4' - is this some sort of sick joke?'
The broadcaster has since apologised and removed the photograph from the advert.
A Channel 4 spokesperson told The Sun: 'We apologise for any offence or upset this has caused.'
Ofcom also confirmed to the publication that Mr Hurley had filed a complaint about the advert.
The watchdog commented: 'Decisions on how news is covered, including the choice of images, is an editorial matter for broadcasters.'
It comes after it was revealed Rudakubana is allegedly allowed to buy treats in prison such as Maltesers and crisps despite throwing scorching water over a prison guard last month.
It is also claimed that he is allowed to call his family, have religious visits and receive money from relatives while in the south east London prison.
Patrick Hurley, who is an MP for Southport, took to social media to express his outrage and posted on X
A source told The Sun that Rudakubana has been 'spending £5.50 a week' since he attacked the guard and is allowed to buy 'anything he likes as long as it's not dangerous'.
They added: 'He's still allowed to buy things like Maltesers and Pringles crisps if he fancies them.'
Since Rudakubana attacked the guard he has been on a 'basic' level of treatment behind bars meaning he no longer has access to a TV and that his time out of his cell has been restricted.
He is also said to be no longer permitted to purchase butter or baby oil which could be heated for an attack.

Porn star Bonnie Blue wants to host sex education TV show after bedding 1000s of men

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PORN star Bonnie Blue has been discussing the possibility of doing a sex education TV series following the surge of interest in her recent Channel 4 documentary. At the launch of the programme, 1,000 Men And Me, she told event host Anna Richardson she wants to front a show to help men and women improve their love lives. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up She said: 'Everyone wants different things, everyone has different requirements. 'I know from sleeping with thousands of people everyone wants it differently, so they [men] know not to assume that every woman wants it the same way. If they're going too fast or if they're being too rough, speak up. 'You've got a voice. Tell them you don't want it like that, tell them how you want it.' 1,000 Men And Me centred on Bonnie's claim to have had sex with 1,057 men in just one day in an attempt to set a world record. We told how Ashley Banjo makes an unlikely cameo — in a photo with Bonnie, as her mum recalls her passion for dance as a youngster. Racy dating show The show has caused a stir since it aired last week — and continues to, via Channel 4's catch-up service. But shocked businesses Visa, Cawston Press and Smirnoff have demanded the broadcaster remove their adverts from the programme, saying it does not fit their values. At the show launch in London there seemed a genuine respect between Bonnie and Anna. Humble Bonnie insisted she was a performer and a businesswoman but claimed: 'I didn't join this industry to say, 'I want to change the world'. I'm not the world educator.' Anna replied: 'But in a way, you are.' It's no surprise Anna is so open-minded, given she saw plenty of nudity while hosting C4's Naked Attraction for eight years, before the racy dating show was, sadly, axed last year. Perhaps they could team up on any new sex education project — which would probably end up on C4 too, of course. 5 Bonnie Blue has been discussing the possibility of doing a sex education TV series Credit: Rob Parfitt / Channel 4 LIZ'S GRAVE MISTAKE LIZ HURLEY sees her coffin turned into a treasure chest in a new trailer for her upcoming Channel 4 show The Inheritance. Police ‘cover-up' of Afghan asylum seekers accused of raping girl

Police have been accused of risking public disorder by 'covering-up' the backgrounds of two Afghan asylum seekers charged over the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl. Ahmad Mulakhil was charged with rape and Mohammad Kabir with the kidnap, strangulation and aiding and abetting a rape of the girl in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Police allegedly told local politicians and officials not to reveal the background of the suspects for fear of 'inflaming community tensions'. Mulakhil, who crossed the English Channel on a small boat, allegedly raped the victim at a house on the evening of July 22. CCTV footage from nearby allegedly shows a man walking with a white girl 30 minutes before the alleged rape, the Mail on Sunday reported. Mulakhil was arrested on July 26 and appeared at Coventry magistrates' court two days later. Kabir was arrested on Thursday and appeared in court on Saturday. The men, both aged 23, were remanded in custody to appear at Warwick crown court on August 26. Both men live in rented houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) on adjoining streets. Each provides accommodation for about five asylum seekers. The properties are managed by Serco, which has a £1.9 billion Home Office contract to accommodate applicants for refugee status. • A day at asylum court shows why decisions are so painfully slow Details of the alleged rape were not revealed by police until after the court appearances of the defendants. The names of the roads where the men lived, which are normally disclosed, were kept secret. One official claimed police feared Nuneaton would face protests similar to those at a migrant hotel in Epping, Essex, last month after an asylum seeker was charged with sex offences relating to a girl aged 14. There were clashes on Saturday between protesters and counter-protesters outside the Thistle City Barbican Hotel in Islington, north London, which is being used to house asylum seekers. Four people were arrested during similar protests outside the New Bridge Hotel in Newcastle. George Finch, leader of Warwickshire county council and a Reform party politician, has written to Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, and Alex Franklin-Smith, the chief constable of Warwickshire, complaining about a 'cover-up'. He asked the Home Office to 'immediately remove and rehouse all asylum seekers currently living in HMOs in Warwickshire'. Finch wrote: 'Our local community has had enough of the Home Office breaking planning regulations to turn sections of local communities into unrecognisable, ghetto-like zones.' He said local people were able to 'join the dots' to find that Mulakhil was an asylum seeker after his name was published in the local media and he was told by the county council's chief executive that Kabir 'was an asylum seeker living in an HMO'. Finch claimed a 'cover-up' of the defendants' immigration status 'risks public disorder breaking out on the streets of Warwickshire'. Writing about the rioting that occurred following the murders of three girls in Southport, he said: 'I am disgusted that one year from the social unrest that we saw in parts of the UK in 2024, the Home Office and police have clearly not learned the lessons from the handling of similar incidents last year.' Sir Andy Cooke, HM chief inspector of constabulary, wrote in the Sunday Telegraph that police 'should not be caught off-guard again' in relation to the Southport riots. He said the 'tools that amplified hatred last summer remain largely unchanged and unregulated'. Warwickshire police defended its position, saying in a statement: 'When something significant happens, we brief these partners and local elected officials on the circumstances of the crime, the investigation, the work being undertaken to arrest those responsible and how local people and partners can help a concerned community. 'Where relevant, sensitive information around locations, details of the crime and policing activity to catch offenders can be shared, with a warning that this is sensitive or confidential information and disclosure by those being briefed could affect future court hearings. 'Once someone is charged with an offence, we follow national guidance. This guidance does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status.' Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, wrote on social media 'This is beyond politics. Illegal migration is destroying lives and blighting our country. Keep our women and girls safe.' The government announced in April that asylum seekers will be denied the right to stay in the UK if they have been convicted of sexual offences. Chris Watkins, the Labour leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council, and Philip Seccombe, the Conservative police and crime commissioner for Warwickshire, have been contacted for comment.
