Cyriel Dessers puts transfer ball back in Rangers court as former coach reveals priceless lesson he taught him
Billy Dodds has warned his old Rangers bosses will be taking a huge risk if they choose to cash in on Cyriel Dessers this summer.
Dessers was a standout performer in his first start of the season on Tuesday night - scoring from the spot after setting up Djeidi Gassama for the opener in a 3-0 first leg win over Viktoria Plzen.
But, with the transfer window open until the end of the month, the striker's future remains uncertain after the club received an offer of around £5m from AEK Athens.
And Dodds - who was part of Barry Ferguson's coaching staff for the final three months of the previous campaign - is adamant that selling Dessers now might cost the club in the long run.
He said: 'It would be a gamble now. Rangers were maybe looking to sell him going into the season. But I think the big man has bounced back again and I love players who show that.
'It's like he thinks to himself, 'Get another one in, I'll put him out of the team. Get another one in, I'll see him off too!'. The big man is now saying: 'Right, bring it on. I'll just show you what I can do.'
'He's scored again and he's probably put it back in Rangers' court. I think probably Rangers did want to sell. But now, there's a question mark about it.
'They could bring in a striker who scores 20 and that's a good return. But it's still not what the big man gets.
'Yes, he misses chances and he's the first to admit that. But it's just little details.
'I'm not saying I changed him but I did point out to him, 'Any time you take more than three touches - or two touches especially in the box - you miss your chances, big man. You miss them because you overthink it!'.
'He actually looked at me one of the times when he took three touches and he's like, 'Ah, you're right!'. He admits it.
'I think that's a great trait to have because he knew what could make him better. And when he scored a few of his goals, he came to me, and said: 'one touch, two touches.'
'Honestly, the admiration I've got for him is incredible because I love people who react to a challenge in the face of adversity.
'I loved working with Cyriel. I'm not scared to say it, he's one of my favourites because I love people who want to learn. And he's a sponge.'
And Dodds has backed Nico Raskin to win over new manager Russell Martin despite being axed for Tuesday night's Champions League qualifier on the back of a warning from the boss that some of his key men have to 'drop their egos'.
Dodds said: 'Nico's a very good kid. He's got a good heart. The way I would put it is, Nico needs some convincing. But he's great.
'I think we had him playing some of his best football last season because he was adding goals and he realised he's an all-rounder. He wanted to be a No 6. He can play as a No 6 - nobody's arguing with that. That's what we told him. He's decent there. But he's better as an all-rounder.
'The Belgian manager played him as a No 6 and that was what was in his head. But he's also got to realise that if you score goals as an all-rounder then there's more money in it and bigger moves for him.
'I'm not saying he should leave Rangers but when it comes at the right time, he moves for bigger money. That's what was put to him.
'And then suddenly he starts scoring goals for that energetic position and then he believes in it, funny enough.'
In fact, Dodds believes Martin's side need more big egos if the new boss is to challenge Celtic's domestic superiority.
He went on: 'Some players were harder to handle than others. But there's one thing that was missing at Rangers - and it was egos.
'When you have egos, domestically, it looks after itself. I think you go, 'I'm a good player, we win this game consistently.'
'That's what they actually needed more of and I think that's the thing that was missing.'

Brendan Rodgers on Celtic transfers and answers UCL question
They have already signed six in the summer window but only two - Kieran Tierney and Benjamin Nygren - started on the opening day against St Mirren. That would suggest more first XI additions are required. They look lightest in the wide areas with Nicolas Kuhn sold to Como and Jota injured long term. Many names, like Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Jakob Breum, have been on the radar but the club don't appear any further forward with getting anyone in. Ahead of Sunday's trip to Aberdeen, Rodgers has been asked for an update on transfers. He said: "I've got nothing new for you, no. It's very clear what we need to improve, and a lot of work is going on clearly by ourselves and probably every club. That's the reality of this time of the year, there's a lot of work going on throughout many clubs. "I know the work that Paul [Tisdale] and his staff are putting in. So yeah, we're hoping that we can conclude some deals and improve the squad. Read more: "As a football club, we will want to have the best available squad that we can to get through the season. I mentioned it before, I think a manager always wants it now, you know, to prepare the team as early as you can. But we know the window shuts by the end of August and hopefully by then everything is in place, we're all stable and then ready to go." Asked why it's been so difficult to get attacking players in, Rodgers responded: "There's obviously many things that go into it. I don't do the deals, so I can't answer that for you, but I know that behind the scenes, obviously, there's a lot of work, there's a lot of discussions that go on to conclude deals. "I'm hopeful that come the end of this window, we will have those deals concluded and we get the players in that can help us go forward. I think the focus now at this moment for myself is to really make sure that the players that are here are in the best possible condition, best mindset to play the games and and that that's where we're at at this very moment." The two-legged Champions League play-off is seen as pivotal given the riches on offer for reaching the league stage as well as the difference it can make to a season in terms of having high stakes games to compete in. It would therefore be a boost to have new players in before then, but Rodgers admits he is in the dark over whether that will be possible. "I really don't know," he added. "That's my honest answer. We just have to keep working to look to get the players in and in the meantime work with the players that are here to make them the best that they can be."

Barcelona coach Flick banned for next Champions League match
Aug 8 (Reuters) - Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg have been fined 20,000 euros ($23,320) each and banned for one match in UEFA club competitions for misconduct, the European soccer governing body's disciplinary committee said on Friday. Flick had been furious at several refereeing decisions in his side's 4-3 semi-final loss to Inter Milan in May that stopped them reaching their first Champions League final in a decade. The sanctions will take immediate effect, ruling both men out of the dugout for the start of this season's Champions League. In a separate decision, UEFA fined Barcelona forwards Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski 5,000 euros each for failing to comply with instructions from an anti-doping officer and not immediately reporting to a control post at the same game. Barcelona were also fined 5,250 euros over fans throwing objects and 2,500 euros for lighting fireworks during the match. Inter were fined 22,000 euros for their supporters' blocking public passageways and another 11,500 euros for lighting fireworks. ($1 = 0.8576 euros)

Real Madrid 'have begun work on signing Ballon d'Or nominee' but will have to wait until summer 2026 to bid for £78m-rated PSG star
Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a £78million swoop for PSG midfield maestro and Portugal international Vitinha. The 25-year-old played an integral role in Luis Enrique's Champions League side last term, producing a series of stellar performances in Ligue 1, Europe, and the Club World Cup. Vitinha, who spent a solitary season at Wolves one year before his move to the French capital in 2022, has also been nominated for the 2025 Ballon d'Or award alongside eight of his team-mates. It appears his dazzling displays in the blue and red shirt of Les Parisiens have left a lasting impression on Real Madrid, with Spanish media outlet Marca reporting that they have internally discussed launching a bid to sign the midfielder. However, securing Vitinha's services this summer has been described as 'almost impossible' due to his importance to Enrique's midfield. Real Madrid, therefore, are seemingly putting building blocks in place to make a £78m (€90m) bid for the Portuguese star in the summer of 2026, after the World Cup in the United States. Vitinha still has four years left on his deal, with it set to expire in the summer of 2029, and it would take a mammoth fee to pry him from the grasp of PSG. The former Wolves man made a staggering 59 appearances for the European champions last season, only missing five games in the treble-winning campaign. Vitinha didn't miss a single minute in the Champions League knockout stages, as Enrique's side made history by claiming the European Cup - the trophy that had eluded them for over a decade - for the very first time. It appears that he is top of Real Madrid's list of possible midfielders, as they look to revamp the area once again. Los Blancos have previously been linked with last year's Ballon d'Or winner, and Manchester City star, Rodri. However, there are no signs that it is anything more than just admiration. Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister is another they seemingly have eyes on, but the Argentinian appears happy at the Premier League champions for the time being.
