‘Straight Girls' Poetry Night
Several creative circles merged in the Red Room at KGB Bar in the East Village of Manhattan on a recent March evening. Sipping stiff martinis and enjoying a dedicated playlist of '2008's top hits,' the intersection of literature, fashion, art and internet filled the room with a throwback, almost Beatnik buzz. They were here for the sixth installment of 'Straight Girls,' a monthly poetry reading hosted by the poets Riley Mac and Montana James.
In just a few short months Ms. Mac, 30, and Mr. James, 28, have gained reputations for escaping the sometimes frumpy poetry scene of the outer boroughs. Their knack for pulling together a vaudevillian, stylish repartee is a breath of fresh air for many regular attendees of poetry readings.
'There are a lot of great poetry events in the city, but they can be so insular,' said Meg Yates, an artist who makes work under the name Meg Superstar Princess.
Ms. Yates, 27, praised the two not only for their ability to curate a potent lineup of readers, but also for their effortlessness in organizing a stylish fete that attracts established literary-world figures as well as 'scenesters, socialites and artists that don't leave their house.' The goal, Ms. Mac says, is for the milieu to mirror that of the house parties she would host in high school, which she characterized as 'every social clique you could imagine in my mom's basement.'
The night's roster included the writer Gideon Jacobs, the poet Jordan Franklin and the digital artist Molly Soda, among others. The flyer with the event's details featured a photo from the show 'Jackass' — which debuted on MTV in 2000.
The readings are often a mix of original poetry and found texts that the readers find accidentally poetic. The mood is a mix of ironic and sincere in equal measure, with plenty of pastiche and a heavy appreciation for the profundity of cultural detritus. The poet Erin Perez opened the evening with work about homoerotic friendships, followed by readings of her own LetterBoxed reviews. The audience laughed when Ms. Perez, 27, delivered her review of 'Phantom Thread, from 2017: 'Why was he so mean?'
Ms. Soda, 36, brought a stack of printed-out images from the casting website ModelMayhem.com. She had written captions in the voice of each model. 'After about 15 minutes, I'm OK again,' she said. 'But, I guess, for those 15 minutes, Picasso would be proud,' she added, holding a photo of a would-be model crouching in a field.
Ms. Franklin, 34, who wore a hooded sweatshirt printed with an image from 'The Re-Animator,' a sci-fi film from 1985, was the final act of the evening. Her set included a work titled 'Break: Ode to the Indonesian Action Flick,' and she ended her time onstage by telling the crowd that they were so supportive she found it 'disgusting.'
Ms. Mac and Mr. James said they started 'Straight Girls' because they were feeling relegated to basements in Bushwick and wanted to bring a queer sensibility to the poetry scene in Manhattan, where they both live. 'Poets deserve a stage and a spotlight,' Mr. James said. 'And the audience deserves to be separate from the stage, in the dark. You should be able to roll your eyes in private.'
Ms. Mac met Mr. James at a poetry reading in 2021. Mr. James had read a poem about a 'beautiful spoiled cow,' and Ms. Mac read one on the actress Lea Michele. Mr. James suggested they 'do lunch,' and Ms. Mac replied by saying she had been 'really into hot dogs lately.'
'I was in love,' Mr. James recalls. (The two are not romantically involved. Ms. Mac is engaged to the artist and sometimes-model Coco Gordon-Moore.)
In 2023, Ms. Mac quit drugs and alcohol, and Mr. James followed suit a few months later. When the two started Straight Girls last November, the name was a partial wink at their newfound sober status — as well as an ode to heterosexual girlhood.
Mr. James said it was not so much the attraction to men that defined a straight girl, but rather the themes of self-discovery, longing and a propensity for 'self-romanticizing, keeping a diary.' He added, with appreciation, that 'they're totally self-conscious and not at the same time.' Sofia Coppola and Lana Del Rey were cited as exemplars of artists working in the genre.
'I credit the straight girls in my life for loving me and letting me love them,' said Ms. Mac, who has the phrase 'everyone on earth is a teenage girl' tattooed in lowercase on her abdomen. A bit of poetry, made permanent.

The 'wistful' prediction Carole Middleton had for her family that daughter-in-law Alizée made a reality
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. For Carole Middleton, who saw one daughter become the future queen and another start up her own happy family, her job as a mom seems mostly done. However, there was still one "wistful" prediction she had involving her son, James Middleton, and his partner, Alizée Thevenet, that would turn out coming true. The Middleton family were thrust into the spotlight after Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011. Ever since that monumental day, the Princess of Wales' family have proven themselves to be popular fixtures in the press, attending major events like King Charles' Coronation or winning fans of their own through Pippa Middleton's chic outfits or James' successful business ventures. As for Carole and Michael, the grandparents of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have stepped up and proven "indispensable" to keeping the family unit together - and while she's discreet with her family's personal details, she occasionally offers rare glimpses. One such example came in December 2018 when her "hope" for her son James and Alizée Thevenet was revealed. Speaking about her children and their partners, the she expressed a desire to have a "lovely" daughter-in-law. Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family by Tom Quinn, | Was $29.95, Now $24.20 at Amazon Bringing together historical sources with palace staff testimonies, Tom Quinn delves into what it's really like to grow up in the Royal Family. This account includes tales of royal mischievousness, including those about Queen Elizabeth and Prince William, and it's shocking, funny and insightful all at Deal Carole divulged to The Telegraph that her biggest fear as Kate, Pippa and James grew up was that she'd "lose [her] family" but she happily confirmed that they've "stayed close". "I have two lovely sons-in-law and," she said before adding, in what the publication pondered could be a "wistful note", "I hope I'll have a lovely daughter-in-law." That same month as Carole shared her heartfelt hope for James, he and Alizée were photographed attending the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund's Christmas Carol Service at St Luke's Church. At the time Alizée made a concerted effort to keep her face away from the cameras and it wasn't until May 2019 that James shared his first picture of them as a couple publicly on Instagram. It was just five months later in October 2019 the Princess of Wales's brother confirmed the news that Carole had been wishing for - that he and Alizée were engaged and she was going to have a "lovely daughter-in-law". James and Alizée first met at the South Kensington Club, reportedly in the summer of 2018, and he famously credited his late spaniel Ella for introducing them. "Ella was lying at my feet under the table; realising she might want some water, I trusted her to take herself over to the water bowl across the terrace. However, she made a beeline for Alizée," he wrote in The Telegraph in 2021. "Rather embarrassed, I went over to apologise and bring Ella back. But Alizée thought I was the waiter and ordered her drink while continuing to stroke Ella, who at this point was on her back lapping up the attention." James added, "Little did I know, but I had just met my future wife, all thanks to Ella." James and Alizée's wedding took place in September 2021, with the couple tying the knot in France, surrounded by their nearest and dearest including William and Kate. For Mother's Day in 2023, James shared a special photo of himself with Carole which reports have suggested could have been taken on his wedding day, with some claiming that he appears to be wearing the same suit. James and Alizée have since welcomed their first child - a baby boy named Inigo, born September 21, 2023. James treats fans to rare glimpses into his private life with his wife, son and animals. Most recently, to celebrate his 38th birthday, James shared snippets of Alizee, Inigo and his pets soaking up country life, writing, "Fresh air, wagging tails, and the wild, beautiful rhythm of family life."

LeBron James Reveals 'First Thing' Luka Doncic Told Him After Lakers Trade
LeBron James Reveals 'First Thing' Luka Doncic Told Him After Lakers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We've gotten accustomed now, four months later, to the fact that the Lakers and Mavericks pulled off perhaps the most stunning trade in the history of the NBA, the deal that sent Luka Doncic to L.A. from Dallas, where he appeared to be set up to be a franchise icon for his entire career. Advertisement Since then, we saw the Lakers play great, falter a bit, fall in the postseason and begin looking forward to tweaking the roster around Doncic and star forward LeBron James. We also saw the Mavericks get hammered on the PR front of the Doncic trade, but recoup some of their losses by winning the NBA draft lottery and the rights to sure-fire star Cooper Flagg. But when Doncic was first dealt, he was personally hurt to be discarded by Dallas. Fortunately, he wound up in L.A., which was important for one big reason--and not because Doncic could play with the Lakers and James, one of his basketball idols. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images It was because of the beach. Advertisement In the new episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast, with James and former NBA star Steve Nash, Doncic made a guest appearance. James revealed the first thing that Doncic told him. "First thing, I asked him a question, I was like, how are you adjusting?" James told Nash. "He said, 'Eh, I'm adjusting. I like the beach.' First thing he said." Doncic, laughing, said of L.A., "First of all, this is the first city I play in that has an ocean. I really like the ocean. That was the first thing, after a couple days, that was the first thing on my mind, you know. I like it, I like it very much. The only thing is the traffic." Indeed, before coming to the NBA, Doncic began his pro career with Real Madrid, which is smack dab in the middle of Spain, more than 220 miles from any beach. It was the same in Dallas, which is about 300 miles to the nearest beach. Advertisement Doncic did say that, on the floor, his adjustment to the Lakers was a, "work in progress." But he's gotten an immediate benefit from being in Los Angeles, at least. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 2, 2025, where it first appeared.

Kristin Cavallari Says She 'Hates' Seeing Headlines About Her Dating Life: 'I'm a Real Person' (Exclusive)
Kristin Cavallari is opening up about the constant media attention her dating life receives "The headlines love to just put me in this box that has to do with men and sex," she tells PEOPLE The reality star returns to TV on June 4 with the premiere of Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour on E! Kristin Cavallari isn't immune to the news cycle. The reality TV star, 38, first shot to fame when she was just 17 on MTV's Laguna Beach, and she's continued to receive media attention for the last two decades. Despite her experience in the spotlight, Cavallari — who is making her return to reality TV when Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour premieres on June 4 — tells PEOPLE that she actually "hates" reading stories about herself. "The headlines love to just put me in this box that has to do with men and sex. And I get it. I know it's a game. It's all about clickbait, but when it's about you? I'm a real person. It affects me. It does," she says in this week's issue. Cavallari is also the first to admit that she's been open about her dating life in the past, "probably too much so." Last year, Cavallari made headlines for her 13-year age gap relationship with Montana Boyz TikToker Mark Estes, and on Bunnie Xo's Dumb Blonde podcast in December, Cavallari said Morgan Wallen was "good in bed." Still, Cavallari wishes more people understood that she has "s— going on other than who I'm dating." "How about a headline about me running a really successful business or what a good mom I am? These are real things," she says. "But no, they would never write good headlines because they don't get as many clicks, I guess." Cavallari shares her three children — sons Camden, 12, Jaxon, 11, and daughter Saylor, 9 — with her ex-husband, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler. She's also the founder of lifestyle and jewelry brand Uncommon James, which she launched in 2017, and hosts the popular podcast Let's Be Honest. "Those first couple of years, it was [my] passion and fire that made us successful in the beginning. And I always say to people, I didn't go to college, but I have drive. I'm hardworking. Those things can't be taught," she says. "And so, if you have those things, you're unstoppable. That's what they can't teach you in school, and I have those things." Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. When she's not busy working, Cavallari says she really is just focused on her kids. "I'm going to basketball practice and games like every other parent. I'm at school. I was on a field trip last Friday. I am doing all the normal mom things," she says. "And I think it's probably good for people to see because I think people's idea of me is very different than who I actually am."
