Speaking from Amman, BFI President-Chairman, Interim Committee, Ajay Singh, congratulated young boxers on their performance: 'A proud and satisfying performance by our young boxers at the continental stage! Finishing with 15 gold medals and among the top three nations is a rewarding moment for all of us. These young boxers are the future of Indian boxing. R Praggnanandhaa soaks in glory after defeating D Gukesh, India No. 1 says ‘it looked like he was off at the start…'

R Praggnanandhaa defeated reigning World Champion D Gukesh in the opening round of the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis. The win saw the Indian GM become the new World No. 3 in the live rankings for a short period of time. R Praggnanandhaa defeated D Gukesh in the opening round of the Sinquefield Cup.(Twitter) Speaking after his remarkable victory, he said, 'I think it was a smooth game. It was surprising from him because it looked like he was off at the start, like he spent so much time at a theoretical position and this endgame is just unpleasant for him. It started to get worse and worse. I guess his last chance was to take the pawn on b4 but I think it still should be winning and I think it's a good game to start with.' 'Last year, I messed up some good positions against him, I think I did not beat him (in classical) for almost two years now, so finally it's good to get a win,' he further added. In Round 2, Praggnanandhaa drew with Fabiano Caruana. Meanwhile, Gukesh did bounce back to winning ways, as he beat Abdusattorov in a tense Round 3 fixture. Speaking after beating the Uzbek GM, Gukesh said, 'Especially after yesterday, probably one of the worst games that I'd played, it was nice to bounce back like this.' 'If I would prefer to make two draws or a loss and a win, I'd prefer a loss and a win.' Praggnanandhaa is currently in joint-lead in the tournament standings, with Fabiano Caruana and Levon Aronian. Three of them have 2.0 points, followed by Alireza Firouzja (1.5), Wesley So (1.5), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (1.5), Gukesh (1.5) and Sevian (1.5). Meanwhile, Jan-Krzysztof Duda (1.0) and Nodirbek (0.5) are ninth and tenth. Praggnanandhaa will be hoping to maintain his form, and if he wins the tournament, it will be a perfect reflection of his performance this year.

Not Shubman Gill! BCCI Wants Shreyas Iyer As India ODI Captain But On One Condition...

Last Updated: Shreyas Iyer is being considered as Rohit Sharma's successor for India's ODI captaincy. Amid the raging debate over exclusion of Shreyas Iyer from India's recently announced T20I squad for the next month's Asia Cup, a report claims that the BCCI has bigger plans in store for the middle-order batter. Iyer is being looked at as the captaincy successor to Rohit Sharma in ODIs. The Ajit Agarkar-led Indian men's team selection committee picked a 15-man squad for the 2025 Asia Cup to be held in the UAE from September 9. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the team while Shubman Gill, who last played a T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024, is back in the setup as the vice-captain. Iyer failed to make the cut with Agarkar wondering whom the 30-year-old can replace in the squad. According to Dainik Jagran, there have been formal and informal discussions over the future of Indian cricket team in all three formats. Given the packed schedule ahead, the BCCI isn't willing to burden the responsibility to lead the team on the shoulders of one player. Gill is the current Test captain and is ahead in the race to succeed Suryakumar as the T20I skipper too. After a break of over a month since the conclusion of England tour, the Indian team will be playing non-stop cricket. To share the workload, the idea is to have two different leaders meaning Gill might not become captain of all three formats. As part of the process, Rohit will be asked about his future with the Indian cricket team and accordingly, a decision will be made. Should the 38-year-old decide to hang up his boots from ODIs too, Iyer will likely be named as the long-term captain of the format and could end up leading India at the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa. Rohit has already retired from Tests and T20Is. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Shreyas Iyer to replace Rohit Sharma as India's new ODI captain; BCCI says no to Shubman Gill, announcement on…: Report

The twists and turns in Indian cricket are never-ending. Such is the nature of a transition period. What has added to the drama is the near-impossible task of playing all three formats. A day after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee dropped strong hints of making Shubman Gill an all-format captain by appointing the Test skipper as the vice-captain of the Asia Cup-bound T20I side, it has come to light that the board and the selectors are looking at a different option for ODIs. The BCCI is reportedly considering middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer as the next captain of India's ODI team. While no official decision has been made yet, a report in Dainik Jagran indicates that Iyer is being viewed as the long-term option to lead India in the 50-over format, possibly till the 2027 World Cup. Shubman Gill (front) and Shreyas Iyer run between the wickets during an ODI match.(AFP) Iyer was among the contenders for India's T20 squad for the upcoming Asia Cup but missed out due to the 15-member squad restriction. Despite that, his recent performances, particularly in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, have strengthened his case. The 30-year-old played a key role in India's title-winning campaign, scoring 243 runs across five matches with consistent knocks of 15, 56, 79, 45 and 48. Having already scored 2845 runs in 70 ODIs at an average of 48.22 with five centuries, Iyer's credentials as a dependable batter are well established. Now, his leadership potential is being seriously considered by BCCI and the team management. However, the timing of Iyer's elevation will hinge on Rohit Sharma's decision regarding his international future. Rohit, who is currently leading the ODI side, turned 38 this year. With him and Virat Kohli already retired from T20s and Tests, speculation is growing that the October ODI series against Australia might mark their final appearance in international cricket. The report added that the BCCI officials are expected to meet after the Asia Cup to discuss the future roadmap, including conversations with Rohit and Kohli. If Rohit decides to step down, Iyer could take over as soon as the Australia series. If not, the transition might be delayed. Why was Shubman Gill not in contention for ODI captaincy? Shubman Gill, who was initially considered a possible all-format captain, is unlikely to take up the ODI leadership role. Despite having served as ODI vice-captain recently and boasting an impressive record in the format, BCCI is leaning toward managing his workload more carefully. Gill, who captained India in Tests during the England series and is now vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav in the T20 setup for the Asia Cup, has already been burdened with significant leadership duties. BCCI sources explained that making one player captain across all formats is not a feasible option in the current cricketing calendar. With tours and tournaments packed throughout the year, the mental and physical demands on a three-format captain would be enormous. Gill is set to lead the Test team against West Indies in early October, just days after the Asia Cup ends. Following that, India will travel to Australia for five T20Is before returning for a full series against South Africa. That schedule alone includes two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is within a short span. Given the back-to-back commitments, Gill's ODI captaincy has been ruled out to prevent burnout and ensure he remains effective in the formats he already leads.
