Tourism chiefs in NI confident of another swift return of the Open

Yahoo2 days ago
Tourist chiefs in Northern Ireland are confident of a swift return of golf's Open Championship to the region after hailing last week's event an 'outstanding success'.
Almost 280,000 spectators attended Royal Portrush Golf Club across a week that culminated with world No 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler lifting the prized Claret Jug in front of thousands of cheering fans around the sun-drenched 18th green on Sunday evening.
The 153rd Open at Portrush was the second-best attended event in the championship's long history.
When the Open came to Northern Ireland in 2019 after an almost 70-year absence, tournament organisers, the R&A, committed to staging it at Royal Portrush at least two more times.
There was surprise at how soon the sporting showpiece then returned, especially as the event skipped a year because of the pandemic in 2020.
Tourism NI is now hopeful that there will be a similar timeline for the next staging of the major championship on the region's scenic north coast.
The tourism promotion body's director of events Aine Kearney said the R&A's feedback on last week's event had been overwhelmingly positive.
'We've had really positive engagement with senior people in the R&A and they just told us how well it's gone,' she said.
'And we hope that puts us in a really good place in terms of them coming back as quickly as they did after 2019.'
She added: 'It's been an outstanding success. And I think that's something that's been echoed by the R&A, we've heard the same from the golfers, we've heard the same from all the visitors that have come to experience not only the golf but also the destination.
'The feedback has been absolutely fabulous in terms of how successful it's been, and how much we've been able to shine a light on Northern Ireland as a fabulous destination.'
After the 2019 Open in Portrush, revenue generated by golf tourism in Northern Ireland has jumped by 66% to £86 million per annum. Ms Kearney said there was hope the trade would see a similar 'bounce' on the back of this year's event.
'What we do know is that there were a lot of people playing golf while they were here (for the Open),' she said.
'The reports we have from all of our golf clubs is that their tee time sales this week were absolutely unbelievable and that puts them in a really good position, not only from the income they got from that to be able to continue to invest in their product, but also the advocacy that will come from the people that played.'
She added: 'Hopefully, from that advocacy and the 100 million viewers across 190 countries that saw not only the world's best golfers playing, but also the magic of the landscape and the destination … we hopefully will look to see a similar increase to what we saw on the back of 2019, that was a 66% increase to £86 million.
'If we get that similar bounce again, we'll be very, very happy.'
Ms Kearney said her overriding emotion following the tournament was 'pride'.
'It's absolute pride in terms of how we turned up as a destination, how we showed the world just what an amazing place this is to live, to visit and invest,' she said.

Equinor Q2 core profit drops as expected on lower oil price

OSLO (Reuters) -Equinor's second-quarter profit fell as expected by 13% from a year earlier, its earnings report showed on Wednesday, as declining oil prices outweighed a rise in the price of gas. The Norwegian energy group's adjusted earnings before tax for April-June fell to $6.54 billion from $7.48 billion a year earlier, in line with the $6.53 billion predicted in a poll of 21 analysts compiled by Equinor. Equinor maintained a projection that its oil and gas output will grow by 4% this year compared to 2024 and kept its forecast for capital expenditure in 2025 of $13 billion. "We are on track to deliver production growth in 2025 in line with our guidance," CEO Anders Opedal said in a statement. In February, Equinor followed rivals such as Shell and BP in promising higher oil and gas output while scaling back investment in renewables, citing challenging market conditions for the green energy transition. Advancing sustainable mobility through innovative traffic management solutions and collaborative data integration: Akkodis announces participation in EU-funded project FEDORA

Akkodis is joining forces with leading European partners to create innovative traffic management solutions that enhance sustainable urban mobility across Europe. VIENNA, July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Akkodis, a global digital engineering company and part of the Adecco Group, is proud to participate in the EU-funded FEDORA[1] project (Federation of Network Optimisation Services, Simulation Foresights, and Data Alchemy for Adaptable, Agile, Secure, and Resilient Multimodal Traffic Management). Coordinated by ERTICO – ITS Europe, the initiative, officially launched on June 1st, brings together a strong consortium of institutions focused on solving today's pressing mobility challenges. The FEDORA project addresses key limitations in current traffic management systems, including a lack of orchestration when addressing multi-modal needs in structured integration protocols and in the incorporation of real-world traffic complexities. These gaps have led to suboptimal performance in managing mobility services and a divergence from the EU's sustainability targets. To tackle these challenges, FEDORA will develop a federated digital platform that enables advanced, real-time sensing and forecasting of transport supply and demand, supporting more efficient, sustainable movement of people and goods. At the operational level, FEDORA will offer a collaborative data space from which advanced data processes using interconnected service and tools can be developed. It will also focus on the development of advanced traffic management optimization services and a multi-modal simulation environment to create and assess future mobility scenarios. The approach will be validated through six thematic demonstrations in diverse contexts, including Vienna, the Basque Country, Reggio Emilia, Nicosia, Budapest, and Copenhagen, addressing varying urban and rural conditions, infrastructure maturity levels, and multimodal mobility service availability. The demonstration phase is set to start in summer 2026, with Vienna as the first pilot city. Akkodis brings proven expertise to FEDORA, having previously coordinated the Horizon 2020-funded MobiDataLab project, which advanced data sharing among mobility stakeholders across Europe. The methodologies and cloud-based service platform developed in MobiDataLab now serve as a foundation for FEDORA's data space and will be expanded as part of the new initiative. FEDORA is anticipated to deliver several outcomes that will significantly improve the transport network and traffic oversight. It aims to enhance the multimodal transport system, ensuring efficient door-to-door mobility for both passengers and goods. Additionally, the initiative will develop effective solutions for secure data sharing across different transport modes, fostering a dynamic and responsive management framework. "Akkodis is committed to leveraging its expertise in digital engineering to contribute to the success of the FEDORA project. By collaborating with ERTICO, the City of Vienna, and a strong network of partners, Akkodis aims to improve the efficiency of decarbonized transport solutions in complex environments, promoting their desirability in order to support the EU's vision for sustainable mobility," comments Tanguy Deren, Director of Innovation at Akkodis France. Equinor to commence third tranche of the 2025 share buy-back programme

Equinor (OSE: EQNR, NYSE: EQNR) will on 24 July 2025 commence the third tranche of up to USD 1,265 million of the share buy-back programme for 2025, as announced in relation with the second quarter results 23 July 2025. In this third tranche of the share buy-back programme for 2025, shares for up to USD 417.5 million will be purchased in the market, implying a total third tranche of up to USD 1,265 million including shares to be redeemed from the Norwegian State. The tranche will end no later than 27 October 2025. Equinor announced at the Capital Market Update in February 2025 a share buy-back programme of up to USD 5 billion for 2025, including shares to be redeemed from the Norwegian State, in order to conclude the two-year programme for 2024 – 2025, announced in February 2024. The share buy-back programme will be subject to market outlook and balance sheet strength and be structured into tranches where Equinor will buy back shares for a certain value in USD over a defined period. For the third tranche in 2025, Equinor will be entering into a non-discretionary agreement with a third party who will execute repurchases of shares and make its trading decisions independently of the company. Commencement of new share buy-back tranches after the third tranche in 2025 will be decided by the board of directors on a quarterly basis in line with the company's dividend policy and will be subject to board authorisation for share buy-back from the company's annual general meeting and agreement with the Norwegian State regarding share buy-back (as further described below). The purpose of the share buy-back programme is to reduce the issued share capital of the company. All shares purchased as part of the third tranche for 2025 will thus be cancelled through a capital reduction at the annual general meeting of the company in May 2026. Further information about the share buy-back programme and the third tranche: The third tranche of the share buy-back programme for 2025 is based on an authorisation granted to the board of directors at the annual general meeting of the company held on 14 May 2025. According to the authorisation, the maximum number of shares which can be purchased in the market is 84 million, of which 67,622,812 remain available per commencement of the third tranche in 2025 (buy-backs made under previous tranches in the authorisation period taken into account). The minimum price that can be paid per share is NOK 50, and the maximum price is NOK 1,000. The authorisation is valid until the annual general meeting of the company in May 2026, but no later than 30 June 2026. An agreement between Equinor and the Norwegian State regulates the State's participation in the share buy-back: at the annual general meeting of the company in May 2026, the State will, as per proposal by the board of directors, vote for the cancellation of shares purchased in the market pursuant to the board authorisation, and the redemption and cancellation of a proportionate number of its shares in order to maintain its ownership share in the company at 67%. The price to be paid to the State for redemption of the State's shares shall be the volume-weighted average of the price paid by Equinor for shares purchased in the market plus an interest rate compensation, adjusted for any dividends paid. In the third tranche in 2025, shares will be purchased on the Oslo Stock Exchange and possibly other trading venues within the EEA. Transactions will be conducted in accordance with applicable safe harbour conditions, and as further set out in the Norwegian Securities Trading Act of 2007, EU Commission Regulation (EC) No 2016/1052 and the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority's Guidelines for buy-back programmes from March 2025. The board of directors will propose to the annual general meeting to be held in May 2026, to cancel shares purchased in the market in this third tranche in 2025 and to redeem and cancel a proportionate number of the State's shares per the agreement with the State. Any shares purchased under subsequent tranches of the share buy-back programme for 2025, including a proportionate number of the State's shares will follow a similar process at the annual general meeting of the company in 2026. This is information that Equinor is obliged to make public pursuant to the EU Market Abuse Regulation and that is subject to the disclosure requirements pursuant to Section 5-12 the Norwegian Securities Trading Act.
