Amazon slashes £150 off Vax cleaning machine that ‘leaves the carpet like new'
One shopper said it was 'quite amazing' to see the 'almost black' water that's removed from the carpet with the machine, whilst another noted it's 'as easy to use as a vacuum cleaner' Pet owners have been rushing to snap up a carpet cleaning machine that's had £150 slashed off its price at Amazon. The Vax Smartwash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner has been cut from £350 to £200 for a limited time only and it's already impressed thousands of homeowners and renters. The machine is ideal for households with pets thanks to its SmartWash Pet-Design that washes as users push forward and dries as it's pulled back. For dog and cat parents, the handy gadget also features a new Stubborn Stain Pre-Treatment Wand which loosens embedded dirt, making it ideal for those pesky paw prints. It isn't only pet owners who love the Vax Smartwash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner, as it kills over 99% of odour-causing bacteria and is seven times more effective than vacuuming alone. The nifty gadget also boasts a function that leaves carpets dry in as little as an hour. Other carpet cleaning machines on the market include the Bissell SpotClean StainLift Portable Spot Carpet Cleaner which has been reduced from £100 to £84 at Argos. One shopper said: "I spilt coffee on a cream coloured carpet. This sorted it out. Recommended." Also at Amazon is Bissell's ProHeat 2 X Revolution Pet Pro Carpet Cleaner which usually retails for £300 but is now on sale for £249. It dries carpets in around 30 minutes after cleaning and also features a 3-in-1 upholstery tool which is ideal for cleaning sofas and chairs. Amazon shoppers have been raving about Vax Smartwash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner ability to keep their carpets looking fresh. One said: "If you're wondering whether or not to by this, just do it, we've had carpets for 20 years and never been properly cleaned and we're thinking about new carpets. Decided to buy the Vax just to see if it made a difference, to say I was surprised is putting it mildly. Excellent machine and brought the carpets up like new, we bought the ultimate+ pet cleaner and it's 10/10. Easy to operate, just fantastic." With £150 off, now is a good time to invest in the Vax Smartwash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner. Although the initial outlay of £200 is an investment, for shoppers who regularly rent carpet cleaning machines it could end up saving money in the long run. For example, at B&Q it costs £32.99 to rent a standard Rug Doctor Machine for 48 hours. This increases to £36.99 for the Widetrack option. To rent the standard machine just six times would cost £198 alone. Whilst many shoppers were impressed with the Vax Carpet Cleaner, one was not pleased with the suction, writing: "This is a great machine, and definitely leaves much cleaner carpets. However, the suction function is very temperamental and only works when it feels like it." Another took issue with how long their floors took to dry after use, saying: "Impressed with wash but takes too long for the carpets to dry." It's also worth noting that shoppers will need to purchase the cleaning solution separately. As someone who owns a carpet cleaning machine, I'd say if the carpets have particularly stubborn stains they often use a fair amount of the fluid whilst in use. Plenty of shoppers left the machine five star reviews however (78% of the total ratings were full marks), with one saying: "A brilliant easy to use machine. Mixes the water and solution automatically and leaves the carpet like new. As easy to use as a vacuum cleaner. Highly recommended, 5 stars." Another remarked: "Bought for my partner who is a clean freak at the best of times and had been hounding me about washing our carpets and wanted to hire a local guy who was charging £100 per room which sounded insane. We went for this machine and it's fantastic. Build quality is very high as expected with such a large well known brand. They continued: "It is very easy to set up and before you know it you are washing and cleaning your carpets. Not sure if it is just me but I found it very therapeutic and really enjoyed cleaning. It is really quite amazing at the colour of the water that is removed from the carpet, it's black almost and we didn't think they were that bad. The wash/dry function works perfectly and it really does take quite a lot of water out meaning your carpets take a lot less time to fully dry out. Really happy with the results that we have had from this."

Fresh trade deal calls as Trump tariffs hit UK exports
British exports to the US have plummeted by 13.5 per cent, or £2bn, in the last three months compared to the same period in 2024. This significant decline is attributed to tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, which include a 10 per cent levy on most UK goods and a 25 per cent levy on steel and aluminium. The fall occurred despite a US-UK trade agreement signed in June, which failed to include carve-outs for the steel industry. The British Chambers of Commerce said that the effects of the tariffs are clearly being felt by companies exporting to the US. Ministers are now facing calls to secure the outstanding part of the trade deal, particularly concerning the high tariffs on steel and aluminium exports.

US and Philippines discuss more missile system deployments as tensions rise in South China Sea
The United States is discussing the possible deployment of more missile launchers to the Philippines to strengthen deterrence against aggression in the disputed South China Sea and other Asian security hotspots, but no final decision has been reached by both sides, Manila's ambassador to Washington said Thursday. The U.S. military delivered a mid-range missile system called the Typhon, a land-based weapon that can fire the Standard Missile-6 and the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile, to the northern Philippines as part of joint combat exercises in April last year. That was followed by the transport by the U.S. military of an anti-ship missile launcher in April this year to the northernmost Philippine province of Batanes, just a sea border away from Taiwan. Beijing strongly protested the installation of the U.S. missile systems, saying they were aimed at containing China's rise and warning that these would threaten regional stability. China has asked the Philippines to withdraw the missile launchers from its territory, but officials led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had rejected the demand. Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez said without elaborating that the possible deployment by the U.S. of more Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System or NMESIS missile launchers "was being discussed for consideration by both sides.' The anti-ship missile systems could be installed along Philippine coastal regions facing the South China Sea and outlying regions to beef up deterrence against aggression, he said. 'This is part of the strong U.S. and Philippines defense partnership,' Romualdez told The Associated Press. Romualdez spoke on the sidelines of a trade and investment conference in Manila, where he and Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro encouraged major U.S. companies to invest in a wide array of industries — from energy and telecommunications to infrastructure and navy shipbuilding — in the Philippines, the oldest treaty ally of the U.S. in Asia. 'When U.S. companies invest here, it's not just about returns on capital — it's about returns on alliance,' Romualdez told U.S. business executives at the conference. 'A stronger Philippine economy means a more capable and reliable defense partner for the United States.' 'At a time when America is diversifying supply chains and rethinking global strategy, we are a natural choice – and a strategic necessity,' Romualdez said. 'I ask you to carry this message to the Trump administration: `Every U.S. dollar invested in the Philippines strengthens America's position in the Indo-Pacific.'' U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth flew to Manila in March in his first visit to Asia and said the Trump administration would work with allies to ramp up deterrence against threats across the world, including China's increasingly aggressive actions in the South China Sea. The U.S. was not gearing up for war, Hegseth said then, but underscored that peace would be won 'through strength.' China claims virtually the entire South China Sea. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have overlapping claims to the resource-rich and busy waters, but confrontations have spiked between Chinese and Philippine coast guard and naval forces in recent years. On Wednesday, the U.S. briefly deployed two warships in what it called a 'freedom of navigation' operation off the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea where two Chinese navy and coast guard ships collided earlier in the week while trying to drive away a smaller Philippine coast guard vessel. The high-seas accident sparked alarm among Asian and Western countries. 'Freedom of navigation is essential for the trillions of dollars worth of commerce that passes through these waters,' the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, MaryKay Carlson, told reporters on the sidelines of the Manila investment conference. 'It's about commerce. It's about lives and livelihoods.'
