SIEL Book Fair to Strengthen Cultural Ties Between Morocco, UAE

Maroc21-04-2025

The International Publishing and Book Fair (SIEL), with Sharjah as this year's guest of honor, is a renewed opportunity to strengthen the bridges of communication and cultural ties between Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, said Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, on Friday in Rabat.
"The relationship between the UAE, and Sharjah in particular, with the Kingdom of Morocco, is not a recent one. It is rooted in a long-standing tradition of cultural exchange and the transmission of knowledge," Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi emphasized, as quoted in a press release by the Sharjah Book Authority, on the sidelines of the opening of the 30th SIEL, held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The great traveler Ibn Battuta, "who visited our region centuries ago, bore witness to the authenticity of heritage and the deeply rooted Arab values, which continue to bring us together today," she noted.
"Today, we still draw inspiration from the legacy of Ibn Battuta, from Al Quaraouiyine University, and from the contributions of Sharif Al-Idrissi, to build bridges of communication, culture, and brotherhood between our two countries, and to strengthen the fraternal ties that unite us through our cooperation," she continued.
Sharjah's agenda features more than 50 events during the fair, including poetry readings, lectures, children's workshops, and professional meetings with publishers from both countries. Over 18 Emirati institutions are taking part, presenting hundreds of publications.
Organizers said the initiative aims to boost translation efforts, publishing deals, and joint distribution. A special program targeting young readers is also being held in partnership with the UAE Board on Books for Young People and the "Kan Ya Ma Kan" initiative, using interactive formats to promote reading and Emirati heritage.

Saad Lamjarred's Appeal Trial Postponed for Further Investigation

Rabat – Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred's trial has been postponed, with reports saying that no information has been released on the new hearing date. Lamjarred faces rape charges after French woman Laura Prioul filed a lawsuit against him in 2016. AFP quoted sources close to Lamjarred's case, noting that the court's decision to postpone the trial was due to the need for further investigation. The victim's defense said the new appeal trial reflects the 'hope of full and final justice,' but also cited a 'new ordeal' for their client. In February 2023, a court in Paris sentenced Lamjarred to six-years in prison under charges of aggravated rape and assault. Seven out of the nine juries found him guilty, and the judge sentenced him to six years in prison. The prosecutor initially asked for a seven-year prison sentence and for the defendant to be banned from entering France, but the artist maintained that he is innocent. Following the initial verdict, the controversial singer's defense announced an appeal process. This is not the only alleged rape case that Lamjaraeed is facing. Another woman accused him of similar acts in Saint-Tropez in 2018, and he has also faced similar accusations in New York. Lamjarred is renowned in the Middle East, North Africa, and the whole Arab world, with trending songs in other countries as he regularly features alongside international artists from India and beyond. He has 15.6 million subscribers and more than 15.3 million followers on Instagram. Tags: Saad Lamjared trialSaad Lamjarred

Saad Lamjarred to be retried for aggravated rape in Créteil this June

Convicted in 2023 to six years in prison for aggravated rape, Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred is set to face the courts once again. He will appear free before the Court of Appeal in Créteil from June 2 to 6, 2025. The case dates back to 2016, when the pop star met Laura P. in a Paris nightclub. A few hours later, in a hotel room, the young woman claimed she was beaten and raped. She was 21 years old at the time. During the first trial, she gave chilling testimony, describing the assault, her screams, and her eventual escape. The 40-year-old singer, a prominent figure on the Arab pop scene, has consistently denied the allegations, claiming that no sexual act took place. The court, however, found itself «convinced» of the rape, citing the victim's consistent and detailed account from the time of her initial complaint. The conviction also referenced «the seriousness of the acts, involving the rape of a young woman in her early twenties by a 31-year-old adult, committed with evident violence in a context of heavy alcohol and cocaine use». The court emphasized that Lamjarred could not claim ignorance of the lack of consent, given the violence used and his alleged attempt to dissuade the victim from calling the police immediately afterward. The court also took issue with «the accused's continued denial of the acts» and his «lack of reflection on his actions», as well as a «minimizing narrative» he reportedly presented to a psychiatric expert in 2017. In June, Lamjarred will be retried on charges of «rape with multiple aggravating circumstances» and «aggravated assault» resulting in less than eight days of total incapacity. The high-profile case has once again reignited debates around the impunity of celebrities accused of sexual violence.
