Rangers hungry for wins as Ducks up next

Reuters28-03-2025

March 28 - The New York Rangers will look to break out of their funk when they continue their California road trip on Friday against the Anaheim Ducks.
Despite only one win in five outings, the Rangers (34-32-6, 74 points) sit just outside the Eastern Conference's second wild-card position in what has become a five-team turtle derby.
New York opened their sojourn with a 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, a game in which they held a 1-0 lead at the midway point.
"There have been some games where we haven't been good at all, and I think we did a lot of good things (against the Kings), but it's getting tiring," forward Mika Zibanejad said. "I feel that over the last few weeks, we've been playing some good hockey but we still find a way to lose."
The Rangers, the regular-season champions of 2023-24, have remained in the race while the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings have been stumbling, but they have not been able to find the form to consistently win.
Moral victories, such as a down-to-the-wire loss to a team as hot as the Kings, is worth zero and demoralizing.
"We need wins if we're going to do anything," defenseman Braden Schneider told the New York Post. "We can talk about a good effort or a good game, but it's the end of the year and we need two points to have it mean anything."
Sam Carrick has returned after missing the last game due to birth of a son, but fellow forward Matt Rempe may miss the rest of the regular season due to an upper-body injury suffered in Los Angeles.
The Ducks (31-32-8, 70 points) head into the third clash in a five-game homestand looking to build on a 6-2 victory over the visiting Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
It is only a matter of time before Anaheim, which has won two of three games, is officially eliminated from Stanley Cup playoff contention, but the Ducks are heading down the stretch with improved play.
The Boston game followed the template, starting with a dominant first period in which the Ducks outshot the visitors by a 15-5 margin and followed by a three-goal second period.
"Just a good game overall," said forward Alex Killorn, who collected a pair of assists. "A ton of shots, a ton of opportunities. Just really liked the way we played. Our (defense) was getting up the ice, we had a ton of possessions and we got rewarded."
"We challenged (our players) to come out and initiate the pace of the game," coach Greg Cronin said. "We wanted to try and create a difficult environment right from the beginning, and I thought we were able to do that for the better part of the game."
Although it has been a rough few seasons for the Ducks, they can see positive steps with their young players improving. For example, Leo Carlsson, the second overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, has collected 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in 13 games this month. Carlsson has netted 18 goals and 35 points in 65 games in his second NHL season, including a game-opening short-handed marker against the Bruins.
"He's got good instincts, got length, is quick, good hand-eye co-ordination," coach Cronin said. "Our penalty killing hasn't been great this year, so I'm trying to use these last 12 games to give other people an opportunity."

BREAKING NEWS Knicks set to interview two head-coach candidates in major boost amid tough search for Tom Thibodeau replacement

The first formal interviews for the New York Knicks head-coaching vacancy have been revealed in former NBA head coaches Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown. Both men started last season as head coaches, with Brown being fired by the Sacramento Kings in December for having a losing record. Jenkins was given the pink slip by the Memphis Grizzlies with nine games left in the regular season in March. Jenkins and Brown will throw their name in the hat for the Knicks job less than two weeks after Tom Thibodeau was fired as the team's head coach following New York's Eastern Conference Finals defeat to the Indiana Pacers. Brown has been on an NBA sideline since 1997, spending time with several teams as a top assistant or as a head coach. Brown's most successful season as a head coach was in 2007, when he led a LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers team to the NBA Finals. Jenkins was the Grizzlies head coach from 2019 until a few months ago, leading the team to three playoff appearances but never past the second round.

Raith Rovers give fresh details of potential partnership with Rangers as they insist fans will have final say

Raith Rovers insist fans will have the final say after confirming 'co-operation' discussions have taken place with Rangers. The Stark's Park side have been linked with a tie-in with the Ibrox outfit under new rules encouraging clubs to enter into partnerships with teams in different divisions. The initiative, for players under the age of 21 who qualify for Scotland, is designed to expose more youngsters to first-team football through flexible loans. However, the Kirkcaldy outfit have confessed a collaboration could also involve players who fall outside the terms of the 'co-operation'. Director Ruaridh Kilgour says Raith recognise some supporters may not agree with such a formal agreement, with some fearing Barry Robson's side could lose out as a 'feeder team' for a Premiership club. However, with talks having stalled following Rangers' takeover, he has reassured fans they will be consulted if there are any developments. 'We first heard about this [co-operation system] probably at the tail end of last year,' he explained. 'And then it's become a bit more popular in conversation in the last two months as clubs are starting to now look at who they could potentially partner with. 'If I'm being honest it's not kind of one of [technical director] John Potter's priorities right now. There's a lot of other things going on, like just basically building a squad through the transfer window. 'But, completely out of the blue, Rangers contacted John and asked him to go for a meeting at Murray Park with Nils Koppen, the then technical director. 'They said that they'd pinpointed Raith Rovers as someone they would like to have a partnership with to develop their young players. 'They then came to Stark's Park the week after to have a look around and see what the facilities are like, which again they were really impressed with. 'The way it was left was that we asked them to come up with a proposal of what this could look like. 'They saw this as something where they could potentially send us other players. So players who are maybe a bit older than 21 and also players who weren't Scottish. 'It was left with Rangers to draw up a proposal.' Raith are awaiting a formal response and Koppen has since left his role following Rangers' takeover. In an interview with Raith TV, Kilgour added: 'The way we will then approach that is decided on three factors. 'Number one will be a football factor where Barry [Robson] and John would make a decision based purely on the playing side of it. 'We as a board would make a financial decision on it about how this can help us with our budget, in terms of what the cost would be to bring in these players – or maybe they would be free, who knows. 'And then finally – and most importantly – there'd be a kind of brand perspective where we would put it to supporters. 'Because this is one of those decisions where we feel supporters should be consulted. And the reason for that is we know that some supporters will not like the potential to be partnered with other clubs. 'So we would present all the facts, we'd present the opinion of Barry, we'd present the opinion of us as a board and we would let the supporters make the final decision.'

Rangers coach Issame Charai leaves club after five months

Rangers coach Issame Charai has left the club after five months in the backroom staff. Charai joined the Ibrox side in January to assist former boss Philippe Clement and remained on the coaching staff throughout Barry Ferguson's interim spell. He was previously coach at French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg and has also worked at Al-faisaly, Beerschot, Sint-Truidense and OH Leuvens. Charai also managed Morocco's Under-23 side to the Africa Cup of Nations title. After Russell Martin's appointment as manager, Rangers say it has been mutually agreed for Charai to leave the club. Charai told the club's website: 'As I leave Rangers, I want to thank everyone at the club for their support during my time here. 'This is a really special club, and as it enters a new era, I want to wish everyone associated with the club the very best for what comes next. 'Above all, I want to thank the Rangers supporters for their amazing backing across the period. We had some high moments and some low moments, but their support was the constant. It is something I will always remember and be forever grateful for.' Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart commented: 'I want to place on record the sincere thanks of both the club and I to Issame for his work over the past six months. 'Through the managerial transition in February and beyond, he handled himself superbly and was a real asset to Barry and his staff during their period in charge of the team. 'As the men's first-team moves forth into this new era under Russell, it has been agreed between the club and Issame for him to move on. 'For whatever comes next for him, I want to wish him the very best of luck. He will always be welcome back at Ibrox.'
