Gerik crash: RM1.7mil raised through 'Prihatin Fund'
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the funds collected were contributions from 40 public and private higher learning institutions which included polytechnics and community colleges, as well as contributions from various other sources such as state government agencies, financial institutions and corporate bodies.
He said the special fund, managed by UPSI, will be distributed to recipients in stages and that so far, RM371,000 from the total RM1.7 million has already been disbursed to affected students and their families.
"The RM1.7 million will be given to the families of the victims, and I leave it to the secretariat led by the UPSI Vice-Chancellor (Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff) to manage the fund.
"The higher learning institutions have mobilised their students, staff, and others to contribute," he told reporters after the Tahlil Perdana ceremony for the bus tragedy victims at Dewan Tuanku Canselor UPSI here last night.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, and Perak Education, Higher Education, Youth, and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah.
Zambry also donate a month's salary of his ministership to the fund, demonstrating solidarity with the compassion shown by Malaysians.
Meanwhile, Md Amin said the 'KPT Prihatin Fund', is expected to close this Friday.
"Once we conclude the donation drive, the remaining funds will be given directly to the families.
"Thank you to everyone for your support.
"We aim to finalise this process within the week," he said.
UPSI's Corporate Communications Division said the Tahlil ceremony attracted some 5,000 students, staff members and residents.
At the event, Zambry also received mock cheques from contributing parties, including participating universities and corporations such as Syarikat Takaful Malaysia, Malaysian Takaful Association, Lumut Port, Etiqa Takaful, Hong Leong Takaful, and several banking institutions.
In the June 9 incident, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus ferrying them from Jertih, Terengganu, to their main campus in Tanjong Malim, Perak, was involved in an accident with a Perodua Alza MPV along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik.
The crash also injured 33 others, including the bus driver and assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the MPV.

SIBU (Aug 21): A long-standing parking issue at Rumah Joseph Jarrau in Tanjung Bekakap is set to be resolved with the construction of a new 100-metre-long parking facility, scheduled to begin next week. The RM93,000 project, funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) special allocation for the Bawang Assan state constituency, is expected to be completed within three months. According to Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, the project was initiated following a complaint lodged by Tuai Rumah Joseph to Councillor Johnny Ganning several months ago. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC). 'I have visited the site several times, and I'm pleased the project is now officially set to begin,' Lau said during the handover ceremony to the appointed contractor, Ismawi Enterprise, on Tuesday. Lau, who is SRDC Standing Committee chairman, said the parking facility will benefit not only the longhouse residents but also churchgoers in the area, particularly on weekends and during festive seasons. Expressing his gratitude, Tuai Rumah Joseph thanked all parties involved for approving the much-needed project. 'This facility will ease the parking situation for both residents and visitors, particularly during major events,' he said. In a related development, Lau also witnessed the handover of another infrastructure project, the upgrading of Jalan Yong Kok in the Engkilo area. The 95-metre road improvement project, also funded under the RTP for the Bawang Assan constituency, will be carried out in two phases. Both projects aim to enhance basic infrastructure and improve the quality of life for rural residents, in line with the state government's RTP objectives. PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry is cutting down on bureaucratic hurdles in government service delivery, with a focus on modernising the National Registration Department (NRD), says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The Home Minister said the ministry aims to improve outdated rules and streamline processes that burden citizens and businesses. He added that the initiative has already made progress by reducing the processing time for late birth registrations for children under five years from three months to 45 days. Additionally, the issuance of overseas birth certificates, known as Form A, has been expedited from 52 days to just seven days. 'This initiative is introduced to improve outdated rules and burdensome bureaucratic processes. 'Whether for daily citizen affairs or business communities, the main objective is to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, making processes easier and more efficient. 'Through this initiative, outdated regulations at the NRD, which do not match current developments, are reviewed to be more transparent, efficient and effective,' he told reporters after attending the ministry-level National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, as well as its August monthly assembly here yesterday. Saifuddin Nasution also said that the ministry's 'Menyemai Kasih Rakyat' (Mekar) programme continues its outreach to assist individuals in obtaining identity cards, including for Malaysians overseas. He said that as of July 31, Mekar has successfully conducted 1,633 programmes nationwide, processing 24,863 applications. 'Instead of waiting for individuals to come to our office, we go out and find them,' he added. For Malaysians overseas, he said that the Mekar Diaspora programme would be extended to Australia and the United Kingdom. He said that Malaysians residing in these countries with documentation issues would not have to return home. 'Through the Mekar Diaspora initiative, we send NRD officers to countries with large Malaysian communities to provide these services directly,' he added. The programme is scheduled to be in Melbourne, Australia from Sept 14 to 28, followed by London, United Kingdom from Oct 5 to 17. Separately, in the Dewan Rakyat, Saifuddin Nasution revealed that more than 5,000 juvenile cases were recorded from 2023 to June this year. He said 5,633 cases were recorded during this period – with 2,006 in 2023; 2,442 last year; and 1,185 as of June this year. Selangor recorded the highest number of juvenile cases at 892, followed by Johor (731) and Perak (506). 'Those aged 16 to 18 made up the highest number of cases at 3,637. 'The lowest number of cases was from those aged between seven and 10, with 21 cases,' he said in a written reply yesterday. Saifuddin Nasution also said that scams such as job scams, parcel scams and love scams remain rampant in the country, even though agencies, including the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Bank Negara and private sector, have undertaken continuous outreach programmes. 'Although various initiatives and awareness campaigns have been implemented through forums, social media, exhibitions and talks, the trend of online scams has not shown a noticeable reduction,' he said in another parliamentary reply. He attributed the persistence of scams to four main factors – the constantly changing tactics of syndicates, low levels of digital literacy, the openness of digital platforms and challenges in cross-border enforcement. He said scammers frequently use fake identities and cloned websites to deceive victims, while many people, including the young and elderly, still lack understanding of such modus operandi.

More daily essentials spared from tax under SST expansion
PETALING JAYA: Malaysians will see more essentials spared from tax under the Sales and Services Tax (SST) soon with the number of exempted or zero-rated goods tripling compared with those under the abolished Goods and Services Tax (GST). In a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat, the Finance Ministry said 1,826 goods will be exempted or zero-rated under SST following a rate review and scope expansion effective last month, marking a sharp rise from the 607 goods that enjoyed zero-rated status under GST before it was scrapped in 2018. The exemptions cover a wide range of daily necessities, including raw and unprocessed foods such as chicken, beef, mutton, fish, vegetables, local fruits and rice as well as processed items such as flour, sugar, salt, bread, milk and palm cooking oil. Medicines, medical devices and reading materials are also exempt alongside animal feed, construction materials, fertilisers, pesticides and agricultural and livestock machinery. The reply was in response to a question from Yuneswaran Ramaraj (PH–Segamat) on the number of items exempted under SST compared with GST. On the services side, the government clarified that SST applies to 70% of services in the economy, slightly lower than the 76% under GST. Key basic services remain exempt from service tax, including land and sea transport such as school buses, express buses, LRT, trains and ferries; air transport for rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak; prepaid telecommunication services; food delivery services; residential rentals and maintenance; water supply; and electricity for households consuming below 600kWh. The Finance Ministry stressed that the SST expansion is being carried out in a careful, targeted and progressive manner to cushion the impact on the cost of living while promoting sustainable economic growth. 'The larger number of exempted goods and the lower percentage of taxable services under SST compared with GST reflect the government's commitment to the welfare of the people while ensuring stronger fiscal sustainability under the Madani economic framework.'
