Major development in Parnell Square knife attack trial

A psychiatric report has now been completed on Riad Bouchaker, who is charged with assaulting a care worker and attempting to murder three children on Parnell Square in Dublin, a court has heard. At the Central Criminal Court on Wednesday, a senior counsel acting for Mr Bouchaker said that he received the report yesterday and will make it available to the Director of Public Prosecutions in due course. Mr Justice Paul McDermott put the matter back for mention to July 23 next. Mr Bouchaker (51), of no fixed abode, is charged with the attempted murder of two girls and one boy. He is also charged with assault causing serious harm to a care worker and possession or production of a knife. The incident occurred at Parnell Square on the afternoon of November 23, 2023. In December last year, the court was told that a psychiatrist assessing the accused man deemed it necessary to have further work carried out by a neuropsychologist. In April, the court heard that the expert's report had been made available, but the psychiatrist requested a further four weeks to review matters. The court also heard that the treating doctor had encountered delays accessing the defendant in prison and with regards to the availability of an interpreter. At that same sitting, Mr Justice McDermott noted the age of the complainants and said the case must be given priority as soon as the psychiatric issue was resolved. He asked that everyone involved, including lawyers and professionals, "strain themselves" to ensure it gets on as quickly as possible. In February of this year, the Department of Justice and the courts announced a protocol to fast-track trials involving children. The courts have committed to completing the trial process within one year, where possible, if a child is the alleged victim or perpetrator.

Louth man who sexually assaulted stepdaughter and her friend jailed for eight years

A 47-year-old man who offered his stepdaughter €50 for sex has been jailed for eight years. The defendant was sentenced at Dundalk Circuit Court after being convicted by a jury of sexually assaulting the girl and of her sexual exploitation when she was 14. He was also convicted of sexually assaulting her friend when she was thirteen. The man, aged 41 and 42 at the time of the offending, had been in a relationship with Victim A's mother and was effectively her stepfather. They lived in his house and initially had a good relationship. Victim B was in the sitting room of the house on February 21, 2020 when the man put his hand down the back of her trousers. She immediately became upset and ran to another room where she was joined by two friends and told them what happened. Gardaí were contacted. The defendant was convicted of sexually assaulting Victim A on a date unknown between September 1, 2018, and February 28, 2020; and with her sexual exploitation on a date unknown between February 17, 2020 and February 21, 2021 at the house. He bought her a bottle of vodka. She drank half of it. He was at the back door smoking. He kissed her and put two fingers in her vagina. She pushed him away. On another occasion the girl was in her bedroom. The man offered her €50 for sex. She refused and he went away. He returned, saying that he didn't want to make her feel like a prostitute, and asked her if she was sure. The defendant stole Victim B's innocence, the court heard. She couldn't sleep and found it hard to make friends. Her education was impacted. Her mother had suffered since, while the trial brought everything back. He had been a father figure to Victim A. They had a close relationship but that changed when she was about 12. She didn't understand what happened. Her mother believed him over her, and the relationship with her mother was never the same. She couldn't put things behind her and had made an attempt on her life. Judge Dara Hayes said that the defendant's previous conviction for drink driving was not relevant. His relationship with the girl's mother ended almost immediately when the complaint was made. A probation report said that he showed no remorse and was 'victim blaming.' He was adopted and had no close relationship with his birth mother nor with his adult son. He was not working. There were alcohol issues, while he couldn't explain 'drugs related' messages on his phone. Judge Hayes said that Victim B was a guest in his house. Thankfully, she had the strength to immediately report what happened. The defendant saw Victim A as something other than a daughter. It was a 'degrading and disgusting way to speak to any child.' The judge added it was an extraordinary breach of trust, and noted the disparity in age between the man and the two young girls. The defendant had pleaded 'not guilty' which was his constitutional right. He doesn't accept the verdicts and it was 'difficult to see where any mitigation might lie,' Judge Hayes continued. For the sexual assault and sexual exploitation of Victim A, concurrent prison terms of 5 years, nine months and 4 years, nine months, respectively, were imposed, consecutive to 3 years and three months for the sexual assault of Victim B, a total of 9 years. The final 12 months were conditionally suspended, and the sentence backdated to March 4 last. The man must place himself on Probation Service supervision for two years post release and have no contact with the two victims. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme

Despite repeated searches, Falconio's body has never been found. Prosecutors have argued that Murdoch had likely disposed of the backpacker in the vast swaths of desert between Alice Springs and Broome. Fears are now mounting that Falconio's loved ones will never know where his body was left due to Murdoch being on the verge of death. He was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer in 2019 and is now understood to have been transferred to a palliative care unit in Alice Springs recently. He was a drug smuggler who served 15 months for shooting at people celebrating at an Australian rules football match in 1995. Eight years later he was charged with seven counts of abduction and rape, but later acquitted. The same year he was charged with Falconio's murder. The former mechanic, who once drove road trains across the Australian Outback, lost multiple appeals and was denied special leave to appeal to the High Peter Falconio case timeline by Harvey Geh PETER Falconio was shot dead in the Australian outback while travelling with girlfriend Joanne Lees in July 2001. He was 28 years old when he was tragically shot by a man who flagged down the van he was driving. The man was 43-year-old drug smuggler Bradley John Murdoch. Murdoch shot Falconio in the head before bundling Lees into his car and binding her with cable ties. She managed to escape and hide in bushes for five hours, before she ran into the road and waved down a passing truck. Lees soon became a prime suspect in her boyfriend's murder after claims she appeared "emotionless" after the incident. But it was later revealed she had taken the sedative Valium to help her handle her horror ordeal. Police were never able to locate Falconio's remains. Reports in February 2023 detailed that police had found some bones near Alice Springs that were being tested to see if they were the remains of Peter Falconio. The reports were later rubbished with authorities stating: 'No human remains have been located by Northern Territory Police, and a search is not currently being conducted." Murdoch has launched several appeals against his conviction, but he remains in prison in the Northern Territory. He will be 74 years old when he is eligible for parole in 2032. He was handed a life sentence with a 28-year non-parole period, due to expire in 2032. But the Mystery continues to surround the Falconio case because of the absence of a body and no obvious motive for the killing. 6 Murdoch is reportedly nearly dead Credit: Handout - Getty
