Beijing slams video posted by US embassy in Singapore about South China Sea

SINGAPORE : China slammed a video shared on social media by the US embassy in Singapore which criticises Beijing's South China Sea claims, comparing them to the actions of an inconsiderate neighbour who intrudes on others' space.
The roughly 90-second video shows a government-built apartment block inundated with clutter, voiced over in a Singaporean accent.
'This happens right outside Singapore's doorstep too, in the South China Sea, where one neighbour thinks he owns basically everything,' the narrator says, as the video cuts to a series of news clippings on China's territorial disputes.
The post sparked a strident reaction from China's embassy in Singapore late yesterday.
On its Facebook page, the Chinese embassy said the video 'deliberately distorts the ins-and-outs of the South China Sea issue'.
'Under joint efforts of China and Asean countries, the current situation in the South China Sea remains overall stable,' it added, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations bloc.
The embassy said it was 'universally recognised that the US is the least qualified to even talk about international law'.
Beijing claims almost the entire disputed waterway, through which more than 60% of global maritime trade passes, despite an international ruling that its assertion has no merit.
The South China Sea is also believed to contain valuable oil and gas deposits, and there are concerns that Beijing is seeking to expand its reach.
In Southeast Asia, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have partial claims to the sea.
Singapore's foreign ministry said in a statement yesterday that it rejects interference by foreign embassies.
'The Singapore government rejects attempts by foreign embassies to incite domestic reactions to international issues involving third countries,' the statement said.
'Complex issues are best resolved through appropriate channels for effective diplomacy,' it said.

Lee Lan had taken to Facebook to express frustration that Ean Yong had yet to break his silence or take a clear stance, more than three weeks after the Attorney-General's Chambers classified the case as requiring no further action (NFA). She accused Ean Yong of avoiding responsibility, questioning why he did not ensure her brother had legal representation during his Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) interrogation or inform the family earlier about his detention. Teoh, a political aide to Ean Yong, died on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

JAKARTA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) advances its economic integration efforts, Indonesian economist Syafruddin Karimi of Andalas University said the region's ambition to become the world's fourth-largest economy is within reach. "ASEAN is currently entering a pivotal phase in its economic integration project," said Syafruddin in a recent interview with Xinhua. "With the spirit of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration adopted at the 46th ASEAN Summit, the region has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intra-regional cooperation and accelerating progress toward comprehensive economic integration." He emphasized that ASEAN has made "significant progress in recent years, particularly in the harmonization of trade standards, the acceleration of physical and digital connectivity, and advancements within free trade frameworks such as the ASEAN Free Trade Area and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership." "Efforts to promote labor mobility and regional supply chain integration continue, although they still face structural obstacles," he noted. According to him, ASEAN's goal to become the world's fourth-largest economy is theoretically attainable due to its demographic projections, strategic geographic positioning, and the vast potential of domestic markets. However, realizing this ambition will depend heavily on consistent structural reforms, political stability, and the collective capacity of member states to create a policy ecosystem that supports investment and innovation. "Achieving this goal will require stronger policy synergy, efforts to bridge gaps among member states, and a long-term vision that is both consistent and adaptable to global dynamics," he said. Looking ahead, Syafruddin believed ASEAN has the potential to become a stabilizing force in global affairs. "The region could advocate for a more equitable multilateral trading system and push for more inclusive global governance," he said. "This vision can only be realized if ASEAN maintains internal cohesion, deepens substantive economic integration, and crafts a consistent external strategy," he noted.

DOSM elected to chair Asean statistics working group for 2026–2027
PUTRAJAYA: The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has been unanimously elected as chair of the Working Group on Data Sharing, Analysis, Dissemination and Communication of Statistics (WGDSA) for the 2026–2027 term. The decision was made at the 23rd Meeting of the WGDSA (WGDSA23), which began yesterday in Putrajaya. The two-day meeting brought together 18 delegates from Asean Member States (AMS) and the Asean Secretariat (Aseanstats), with Myanmar participating virtually. The gathering aimed to strengthen regional statistical cooperation, enhance data transparency and improve communication strategies under the ASEAN Community Statistical System (ACSS). Chief statistician and ACSS15 chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said in a statement today that the appointment reflected the continued trust of member states in Malaysia's active role in advancing the Asean statistical system. He reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to fostering innovation, inclusivity and resilience in the regional statistical ecosystem, stressing the importance of accessible, reliable and timely statistics in supporting evidence-based policymaking and Asean's integration and development goals. "As we move forward together, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that statistics are communicated clearly, shared meaningfully and used effectively to support Asean's progress. "Malaysia, as Asean chair for 2025, remains committed to promoting statistical cooperation, capacity building and innovation across the region," he said. Discussions at the meeting focused on the implementation of the WGDSA Multi-Year Plan (MYP), expansion of the Asean Statistical Indicators – Consolidated Template (ASI-CT), integration of Application Programming Interfaces (API) for real-time data access, and increased statistical outreach through initiatives such as the Asean Virtual Learning Academy and targeted awareness programmes. Mohd Uzir said the meeting also discussed enhancements to the ASICT data collection template for indicators in areas such as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the manufacturing sector, inflation, population and employment. A key milestone of WGDSA23 was the presentation of Malaysia's preliminary 2025 Action Plan for the Awareness Initiative - an ACSS Annual Priority under the Asean Economic Community (AEC) reporting framework. "The initiative was previously endorsed by the Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) at the 14th Session of the Asean Community Statistical System (ACSS14) in Laos. "As the lead country, Malaysia announced the formation of a dedicated Task Force on Statistical Awareness and Engagement under WGDSA to spearhead its implementation," he said. The outcomes of WGDSA23 will directly inform the ACSS Action Plan 2026–2030, aligned with the broader Asean Community's post-2025 vision, reinforcing the role of statistics in regional integration and policy development.
