Lancashire to honour Farokh Engineer, Clive Lloyd with Old Trafford stands
Engineer played for Lancashire for close to a decade while former West Indies captain Lloyd was with the club for two decades, making indelible contributions to the history of club.
Sources told PTI that the stand-naming ceremony could be held on day one of the Test match that starts July 23. England lead the five-match series 2-1 after three high-intensity games.
"It is a fitting honour for the both legends of the club," said the source.
In 175 matches between 1968 and 1976, the 87-year-old Engineer made 5942 runs, took 429 catches and effected 35 stumpings for Lancashire.
Two-time World Cup-winning West Indies skipper Lloyd, on the other hand, transformed the fortunes of the club after arriving as an overseas player in the early 1970s.
When the Mumbai-born Engineer made his Lancashire debut, the club had not any major title for more than 15 years but he helped them lift the Gillette Cup four times between 1970 and 1975.
Both Engineer and Lloyd would be immortalised in Lancashire history later this week. Interestingly, Engineer doesn't have a stand named after him at Brabourne Stadium where he played most of his cricket.
"They were incredible times, and Old Trafford was a marvellous place to be. People would come for miles to see us play," Engineer had told the club website a few years ago.
"From the Old Trafford dressing room we could see Warwick Road railway station and before the game we would see packed trains emptying the passengers on the platform. We could hear the chanting and the excited chatter and laughter," he recalled.
Engineer also remembered receiving fan mail during his heydays.
"It was amazing, our lockers would be stuffed full of requests for autographs and invitations to parties. Everyone in England was talking about that great team, names like Clive Lloyd, Harry Pilling, Peter Lever and Ken Shuttleworth," he said.
"That buzz lasted for years and we were the most famous one-day team in the land." After retirement, Engineer made Manchester his home and continues to live here till date. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, who is here on a personal visit, is also expected to attend the ceremony alongside the senior officials of the club.

A letter dated July 21, supposedly from Brys to the sports ministry and FECAFOOT, said he had made the decision to terminate his contract "due to the non-payment of my remuneration and that of my staff for more than 60 days." When the letter came into the public domain on Wednesday, FECAFOOT said in a statement they had noted the resignation and would "implement a coordinated response to mitigate the impact of this vacancy at the head of the national team's technical staff." However, Brys later said in a letter to the sports ministry that his email had likely been hacked, and that he had not resigned. Cameroon's sports ministry confirmed that Brys remained in his role. FECAFOOT has not responded to the coach's denial. It comes five months before the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco and with Cameroon's qualification for the 2026 World Cup undecided. Brys has had a testy relationship with FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto'o since taking the job last year, but his position is funded by the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education. Cameroon have been drawn in a group with defending champions Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mozambique at the December 21-January 18 finals of the AFCON. They are currently second in their qualifying pool for next year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, a point behind Cape Verde with four rounds remaining. Only the top team automatically earns their place at the finals, with Cameroon set for a crunch tie away against Cape Verde in September. The qualification campaign will conclude in October. Rishabh Pant retires hurt after Woakes' yorker crashes on to his foot
MANCHESTER: India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant retired hurt and went for scans after copping a blow on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes on the opening day of the fourth Test here on Wednesday. Pant was batting on 37 off 48 balls at that time. The wicketkeeper-batter first received on-field medical attention but had to be moved out of the field in a golf cart labelled as an ambulance. "Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress," the BCCI said in statement after the end of the day's play. Blood was seen seeping off Pant's right foot, and the affected area had considerable swelling as well. More details of his latest injury are awaited. Woakes' full length ball crashed on to Pant's toe, and the England players went up in appeal for leg before. But a tiny inside edge on the review saved the day for Pant. This was the second injury for Pant in this series as he had bruised his finger while keeping during the third Test at the Lord's, which prevented him from guarding the stumps in England's second innings. India batter Sai Sudharsan, who hit his maiden Test fifty -- 61 -- on Wednesday said if Pant is ruled out of the series, the visitors will definitely face severe consequences. "Obviously, because he (Pant) was batting really well today as well. So, and plus we miss out, miss a batter if he doesn't come back again," Sudharsan said at the post-day press conference. "So, it will definitely have consequences. But at the same time, the batters who are batting right now and there are a few more all-rounders inside. So, we'll try and give our best and bat long so that we negotiate that loss very well." Dhruv Jurel had kept the wickets then as a substitute in the absence of Pant. In case Pant cannot keep wickets in this Test, then India can summon Jurel again for keeping but his effort at the Lord's was underwhelming as he conceded 26 byes in England's second innings. In the unfortunate eventuality of Pant getting ruled out of the remainder of the series, the management can request the services of Ishan Kishan, who recently played two County matches for Nottinghamshire. He was also a part of the India A squad that faced the England Lions ahead of the Test series, though the 26-year-old did not appear in any of the two matches. The think tank can also ask KL Rahul to keep wickets, but he has not done that duty since the tour of South Africa in the 2023-24 season.

'Makes up for lack of recognition in India': Farokh Engineer on stand named after him at Old Trafford
MANCHESTER: Farokh Engineer was on Wednesday bestowed with the rare honour of having a stand named after him at an overseas ground -- the storied Old Trafford in Manchester. The B Stand, located in between the Player and Media Centre and the extension of the Hilton hotel at Old Trafford, was formally named the Sir Clive Lloyd and Farokh Engineer Stand before the toss of the fourth Test. Both Engineer and legendary West Indies captain Lloyd were in attendance as the stand was unveiled in recognition of their immense contribution to the Lancashire Cricket Club. "It is a proud moment not only for me but for India as well. Both Clive and I were talking about it in the morning. We never thought something like this would be done in our honour. God is great. This makes up for not receiving recognition in my own country," Engineer said. Engineer, 87, played the majority of his cricket in Bombay, particularly at the Brabourne Stadium. "It is a shame that my achievements are not recognised where I played most of my cricket," he said. However, Engineer was thankful to the BCCI for presenting him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. "Lancashire Cricket is delighted to announce that the Club have named a stand at Emirates Old Trafford after Club icons, and Hall of Fame inductees, Sir Clive Lloyd and Farokh Engineer. The ceremony took place this morning, on Day One of the Fourth Test between England and India, with Sir Clive and Farokh joined by representatives from the Club to unveil the plaque," said Lancashire Cricket in a statement. The West Indian legend said it was a privilege for him to share the honour with Engineer. "I share this honour with Farokh, a great friend and brother, as well as all our teammates, and the Lancashire supporters who stood by me through triumphs and trials. Cricket has always been a team game, and my name on this stand reflects all the people who helped me along the way," he said.
