Mother dies 4 months after being given ‘expired saline' by West Bengal govt-run hospital
Four months after allegedly being administered contaminated saline in the West Bengal government-run Midnapore Medical College, 20-year-old Nasrin Khatun – a new mother – died on Sunday night.
According to her family, her condition had remained critical since the saline administration. She was on dialysis, her heart was failing, and two days before her death, she began experiencing seizures during dialysis. She never regained consciousness and was placed on a ventilator.
The incident dates back to January 2025, when a 31-year-old woman who had delivered a baby on January 8 died the next day at the state-run hospital. Her family alleged that her death was caused by the use of 'expired' saline. Three other women, including Nasrin, developed complications after receiving the same saline. The affected women were transferred to SSKM Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on January 12.
'She had been battling for her life after that poisonous saline was given to her,' said Sheikh Zayed, Nasrin's maternal uncle, to The Indian Express. 'For the last two days, she was on ventilation. We were told that her organs had started to fail.'
Nasrin's mother-in-law, Fateha Bibi, told reporters, 'Ten days ago, she was shifted to a general bed and doctors said she was to return home, but then during dialysis she suddenly started having fits, after which she did not regain consciousness. Her kidneys were not working, neither was her heart. We have lost everything. The child will never know what a mother's care is like. My son's life is over… We are worried for him as he is also unwell.'
Silence has descended over Keshpur village, where Nasrin lived.
Meanwhile, the other two affected mothers, Mampi Singh and Minara Biwi, had recently been discharged from the hospital.
Following the January incident, a 13-member team from the State Health Department had visited the hospitals amid widespread protests. Family members of the deceased 31-year-old woman filed complaints at Kotwali police station, expressing frustration that action was 'only being taken' after the patients had died.
The West Bengal government then issued a directive stating: 'All the items procured through SMIS from Paschim Banga Pharmaceutical should not be used even if available… and all existing stocks should be withdrawn.'
As part of the fallout, the government suspended 12 doctors for 'medical negligence' related to the use of the expired saline. Compensation of Rs 12 lakh and a government job were announced for the family of the deceased.

Stopped from gambling, man kills wife in Khanna: police
A man allegedly strangled his wife to death after she stopped him from gambling at Jeerakh village of Malaud in Khanna Sub-Division late on Monday, police said Tuesday. The 38-year-old victim, Paramjit Kaur, married Lakhvir Singh around a decade ago, and the couple has two daughters together, aged 6 and 2 years, police said. The victim's brother Kuldeep Singh told police that Lakhvir had a severe gambling addiction. Kuldeep told police, 'Lakhvir would lose money in gambling daily. To keep peace at home, Paramjit would often borrow money from her parents to give to her husband to save herself from physical abuse.' Kuldeep said, 'Despite her best efforts, things only got worse. Lakhvir lost lakhs of rupees in gambling. Lakhvir mortgaged their house, jewellery, and even a motorcycle. On June 2, a heated argument ensued when Lakhvir asked for money to gamble, and Paramjit refused. Enraged, he strangled her with a rope.' 'After the murder, Lakhvir placed her body on a cot and covered it with a bedsheet to make it appear as if she was asleep. Suspicious neighbours, however, alerted Paramjit's family. When her relatives arrived, they noticed strangulation marks around her neck and immediately informed the police,' police said. DSP (Payal) Hemant Malhotra said, 'A murder case has been registered against Lakhvir Singh based on Kuldeep's statement. The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem.' Police arrested Lakhvir Singh for his wife's murder. The DSP said, 'Lakhvir had taken loans amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh from several sources in his wife's name and lost all the money in gambling. His wife frequently asked him to repay the loan, which led to frequent arguments. On June 2, one such fight escalated into murder. Lakhvir tried to stage the death as a suicide by leaving the rope around her neck, but police investigated and found she was murdered.' The DSP added that Lakhvir confessed to his crime. Police obtained a three-day remand for further investigation.

Prez Murmu may open Gorakhpur Ayush varsity on June 30
Lucknow: The state's first Ayush university, coming up in Gorakhpur, is all set for its inauguration on June 30. If all goes as planned, President Droupadi Murmu will conduct the ceremony. She is also expected to attend the convocation ceremony of the first undergraduate (MBBS) batch at Gorakhpur AIIMS. Sharing this on Tuesday, an official spokesperson said, "The Ayush university will be Gorakhpur's fourth university and the first one where both the foundation stone laying and inauguration will be conducted by a President (Ram Nath Kovind on Aug 28, 2021)." Officials said that the university has come up at a cost of Rs 267.5 crore and is spread across over 52 acres in the Pipri, Bhathat area of Gorakhpur district. Stating that the university was one of the dream projects of chief minister Yogi Adityanath , officials said that over 95% of the construction work is complete. "The facility centre, vice chancellor's residence and various staff accommodations are fully ready, while only some finishing touches and final coat painting remain pending in the boys' and girls' hostels. The executing agency has been instructed to complete these within the next 10 days," they said. Mentioning that the Ayush university serves as an integrated regulatory body for Ayush disciplines — Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Yoga and Siddha — officials said that all govt and private Ayush colleges in the state are now regulated by this university. "Currently, around 100 Ayush educational institutions (Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Unani) in the state are affiliated with this university," they said. Since the inauguration of the Ayush OPD on Feb 15, 2023, more than 100,000 patients have benefited from consultations. The OPD sees an average of 300 patients daily for Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Unani consultations. Soon, the opening of the Ayush hospital will provide excellent facilities for treatment through Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga and Naturopathy. It is also serving as a core to boost health tourism and medicinal farming, creating employment opportunities. "The state could connect local villagers to various forms of employment. The fully operational university will pave the way for farmers' prosperity and job opportunities for youth by creating an ecosystem for medicinal farming and herb collection," they said, adding that CM Yogi may inspect the Ayush university on his next visit.

'Maggi crisis was one of the greatest challenges of career'
NEW DELHI: The Maggi crisis, which unfolded in June 2015 and led to a nationwide ban of the popular instant noodles, was "one of the greatest challenges" of my career, said Suresh Narayanan , chairman and MD of Nestle India, said in his final letter to shareholders before his retirement on July 31. Narayanan, who took over as the company's CMD in 2015, is recognised for rejuvenating the company's flagship brand Maggi, after the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) raised concerns about high levels of lead and monosodium glutamate in the product, leading to a temporary ban and significant backlash for the brand. Maggi noodles went from market leadership to near extinction and recovered 60% of its market share within months of its relaunch, he added. In his letter, Narayanan highlighted the decade's achievements, noting that Nestle India's capex increased from 1.8% of sales in 2015 to 10% in 24-25. "This not only demonstrates the focus on Indian consumers, but also our commitment to manufacture in India and 'Make in India' as a theme,'' he said. The company achieved a CAGR of over 10% in revenue and 21% in net profit over 2015-2025. Its revenue in FY24-25 stood at Rs 20,100 crore and net profit at Rs 3,300 crore. "In 2015, many considered us to be solely a Maggi noodles company. Since then we recalibrated and rejuvenated the portfolio launching over 150+ new products that have contributed to 7% of sales,'' Narayanan said.
