KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The ringgit is expected to trade firmer next week following the US labour market data, an analyst said.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said investors would pay attention on two key developments, namely the Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) and the unemployment rate - and the expiry of the 90-day pause on US tariff implementation.
"The labour market data will be pivotal in shaping expectations for the US Federal Reserve's policy direction, with greater emphasis likely to shift towards supporting maximum employment
"With signs of a softening global and US economy emerging, investor sentiment is expected to remain cautious heading into the second half of 2025,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam said the US job market is showing moderation, with the monthly average NFP standing at 123,800 in the first five months of 2025, down from 179,600 in the same period last year.
The unemployment rate had risen from 4.0 per cent in January to 4.2 per cent in March this year, he added.
On the currency front, he said the ringgit has shown resilience this week, rebounding from RM4.2948 against the US dollar on June 23 to RM4.2327 on June 26, marking a 1.5 per cent appreciation.
"With the US Dollar Index (DXY) on a softer trajectory, we anticipate the ringgit could trade firmer around RM4.22 to RM4.23 in the coming week,' he said.
The ringgit ended the week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2300/2355 on Thursday from 4.2505/2565 last Friday.
The local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies.
The ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9359/9399 from 2.9245/9289 at last Friday's close, shed against the British pound to 5.8141/8217 from 5.7356/7437 previously, and slid versus the euro to 4.9597/9661 from 4.9000/9069 at the end of last week.
The ringgit also traded lower against Asean currencies.
The local note dropped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3192/3240 on Thursday from 3.3088/3140 last Friday, and weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.0254/0488 from 12.9727/9969 last week.
It fell versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.9/261.4 on Thursday from 259.2/259.7 last Friday and was marginally lower against the Philippine peso at 7.47/7.49 compared to 7.43/7.45 previously.
The market was closed on Friday for the Maal Hijrah public holiday. -- Bernama

Prabowo: Indonesia can achieve energy self-sufficiency in six years

Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto speaks during a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Saint Petersburg, Russia, June 20, 2025. -- REUTERS/Anton Vaganov KARAWANG, West Java (Bernama-ANTARA): Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has expressed optimism that Indonesia can achieve energy self-sufficiency within the next five to six years, ANTARA News Agency reported. He made the statement during a speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Integrated Electric Vehicle Battery Industry Ecosystem project in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday. "I have been informed by experts that our nation truly has the ability to achieve energy self-sufficiency, and based on my own calculations, it will not take long. In five years, six years at the latest, we can be energy self-sufficient,' he said. The head of state explained that one of the key pillars of national energy independence is the utilisation of solar power. President Prabowo stated that the battery technology to be produced in Karawang will play a vital role in efficiently storing and distributing solar energy. "Solar power's key lies in battery technology, and today we are witnessing that development,' he remarked. According to the report he received, the current capacity generated at the facility stands at 15 gigawatts. However, to achieve full energy independence, Indonesia will need around 100 gigawatts. "This means we need to multiply projects like this, and I believe our nation is capable of doing so,' Prabowo stated. The electric vehicle battery industry project is a collaboration between the state-owned mining company ANTAM, the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and a consortium of CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL). The project covers upstream to downstream processing and consists of six sub-projects, five of which are located in East Halmahera, North Maluku, and one in Karawang. As part of the National Strategic Projects (PSN), the project investment totals US$5.9 billion and covers an area of 3,023 hectares. It is expected to create up to 8,000 jobs and support the development of 18 infrastructure projects, including a multifunctional port. - Bernama-ANTARA

Labuan Corp urged to boost community empowerment and food security

LABUAN: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, has urged Labuan Corporation (LC) to shift its focus beyond basic municipal services and actively facilitate community empowerment. Speaking to Bernama after a meeting with LC's top management, she emphasised the need for the corporation to play a pivotal role in improving socioeconomic conditions. 'Labuan Corporation must act as a facilitator to empower the socioeconomic well-being of the people, including addressing food security and the high cost of living on the island,' she said. Dr Zaliha stressed that governance and integrity should form the foundation of local authority operations. Despite Labuan's high GDP per capita, driven by oil and gas as well as finance sectors, Dr Zaliha noted that this economic strength has not significantly benefited ordinary residents. She highlighted the importance of reducing food import dependency by boosting local production of essentials like poultry, meat, eggs, and vegetables. Additionally, she pointed to the upcoming Borneo Flora Festival as an opportunity to stimulate economic activity in hospitality, transportation, and homestay sectors, ensuring broader community participation. Dr Zaliha urged LC to evolve into a dynamic force for inclusive growth, leveraging tourism and infrastructure to ensure prosperity reaches all residents.

SST Expansion: No Big Impact On Parents Sending Children To Private Kindergarten

KUALA LANGAT, June 29 (Bernama) -- The expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will not have a significant impact on parents who send their children to private nurseries, kindergartens or preschools, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She said this was because the service tax would only apply to operators imposing annual tuition fees exceeding RM60,000 per student. 'The public need not worry, as it is understood that most private institutions currently do not charge fees that reach the RM60,000 threshold per year,' she told reporters after the Anjung Sinar 2025 Programme appreciation ceremony here today. Nancy also reminded entrepreneurs not to capitalise on efforts to strengthen the country's fiscal position and broaden the tax base in ways that would burden parents. 'We hope they (business operators) will act honestly to help parents so that they are able to work. Operators must also remember that people need their services, so do not charge excessively,' she said. The six per cent service tax, which will be imposed from July 1 on educational services including private preschools and schools, will not apply to Malaysian citizens with disabilities. At today's programme, Nancy presented awards to five outstanding icons of the Anjung Sinar Programme by Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN), representing the education, leadership, community, career and volunteer categories. The icons were selected based on their achievements and significant contributions over the three years they were mentored and guided through the comprehensive approach offered under the Anjung Sinar Programme, which began in 2023. --BERNAMA
