Air quality alerts issued in 3 states as people told to stay indoors
A thick, toxic cloud of smoke has blanketed parts of the US on Monday, sparking air quality emergencies in three states. Residents in Michigan, Minnesota and South Carolina have been issued the alert, urging them to stay indoors today and possibly Tuesday. Authorities warned that smoke from more than 160 active wildfires in Canada is drifting southward, creating a public health emergency across several US regions. The National Weather Service issued alerts cautioning that fine particles in the air known as PM2.5 has risen to unsafe levels. PM2.5, fine particles less than 2.5 micrometers wide about 30 times smaller than a human hair. It can easily penetrate deep in the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation, heart issues and worsening asthma symptoms. Children, the elderly and people with asthma and heart disease are especially at risk. In Michigan and Minnesota, the problem is largely due to smoke pouring in from blazes in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, driven south by strong wind and cold front. Meanwhile, parts of South Carolina are experiencing a separate but related threat, high ozone pollution levels , worsened by weekend smoke interactions Officials advised locals to limit the outdoor activities, close windows and use filtered air indoors to avoid potentially serious health effects. Wildfire smoke contains a mix of gases and fine particles that can trigger respiratory problems and exacerbate chronic health conditions. On Monday, a broad air quality alert was in place for most of Minnesota, as smoke from Manitoba and Saskatchewan wildfires continued its slow march south. The pollution stems from Canada's escalating wildfire crisis, which officials say is on track to rival or exceed last year's record-breaking season. 'Sensitive groups should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion,' the alert said, adding that even healthy individuals may feel effects during peak hours. In Michigan, the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued an advisory affecting 15 counties, including Keweenaw, Delta, Marquette, Iron, and Houghton. Conditions were expected to remain unhealthy for sensitive groups through late Monday and potentially into Tuesday morning. The warning coincided with a Red Flag Warning in effect until 10pmET/9pm CST in western Upper Michigan, where hot, dry, and windy weather created prime conditions for fire spread. Temperatures near 90°F and humidity levels below 30 percent meant any spark could lead to a rapidly spreading blaze. 'Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly,' the National Weather Service in Marquette posted. 'Campfires, outdoor grills, smoking materials, fireworks, chain saws, and all-terrain vehicles all have the potential to throw a spark and ignite a dangerous and destructive fire.' Meanwhile, The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) has issued a Code Orange Ozone Action Day for the Catawba and Upstate regions, including cities like Greenville and Spartanburg. The warning comes as stagnant air, low wind speeds, and high temperatures are expected to cause elevated levels of ground-level ozone, worsened by wildfire smoke drifting from Canada. 'These conditions create a perfect storm for ozone pollution, especially dangerous for people with asthma or other lung diseases,' said an SCDES spokesperson. The danger isn't limited to just these three states. Experts warn that hazy skies and low-level smoke could stretch as far south as Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, and as far east as the Mid-Atlantic in coming days. Satellite imagery over the weekend showed a thick blanket of smoke reaching from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes. AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham noted that the smoke will vary in intensity. 'Most of the time it will hover high in the atmosphere and just dim the sun, but there will be episodes where it sinks to ground level,' Buckingham said. That drop makes the air dangerous to breathe, especially for people with pre-existing respiratory issues. In Manitoba, Premier Wab Kinew declared a state of emergency last week and ordered evacuations of over 17,000 residents from communities near large fire zones. 'This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people's living memory,' Kinew said. The Canadian military has been called in to assist. While experts say 2025's wildfire smoke hasn't yet matched last year's historic haze, which famously turned New York City skies orange, they warn the season is still in its early stages. Peak wildfire activity in Canada typically occurs between late June and early August.

iPhone 17: FINALLY Bigger Screens for EVERYONE?
The iPhone 17 has become a focal point of speculation, with rumors suggesting that it may feature larger displays than its predecessors. This potential shift could mark a significant moment in Apple's design trajectory, offering users a more immersive experience while raising important considerations about practicality and usability. Such a move would align with broader trends in the smartphone industry, where screen size plays an increasingly pivotal role in shaping user preferences and device functionality. The video below from SaranByte gives us more details on what Apple has planned for its 2025 iPhone 17 range. Watch this video on YouTube. What the Rumors Say About Screen Size Reports indicate that the iPhone 17 could introduce displays that are noticeably larger, catering to the growing demand for expansive screens. This trend reflects the evolving needs of users who prioritize enhanced media consumption, gaming, and multitasking capabilities. Apple has historically managed to increase screen sizes without compromising usability, suggesting that any changes would likely strike a careful balance between innovation and practicality. While exact dimensions remain unconfirmed, the possibility of larger screens underscores Apple's commitment to staying competitive in a market where screen real estate is a critical factor for consumers. Design Adjustments to Support Bigger Screens To integrate larger displays seamlessly, Apple may need to implement significant design adjustments. Strategies such as reducing bezel size or adopting edge-to-edge displays could allow for a larger screen without drastically increasing the device's overall footprint. Apple's design philosophy, which emphasizes sleekness and functionality, suggests that any modifications would preserve the brand's iconic aesthetic. Additionally, advancements in materials and engineering could result in a lighter, more ergonomic device, making sure that a larger screen does not compromise portability or comfort during extended use. Apple's potential design changes could also include innovations in display technology, such as improved OLED panels or even the rumored micro-LED technology. These advancements could enhance visual quality while maintaining energy efficiency, further solidifying Apple's reputation for delivering innovative devices. How Larger Displays Could Affect User Experience A larger screen on the iPhone 17 could significantly enhance your overall experience by offering more immersive visuals and improved multitasking capabilities. For instance, split-screen functionality could become more practical, allowing you to use multiple apps simultaneously without feeling constrained by limited screen space. This could be particularly beneficial for productivity tasks, such as editing documents or managing workflows on the go. However, larger displays may also introduce challenges, such as reduced one-handed usability. Apple's software solutions, including gesture-based controls and adaptive interfaces, could play a crucial role in addressing these concerns. Features like Reachability, which allows users to access the top of the screen more easily, or customizable interface layouts could ensure that the device remains intuitive and user-friendly, even with a larger form factor. Potential Impact on Device Dimensions The introduction of larger displays is likely to influence the iPhone 17's overall dimensions. While Apple may strive to keep the device compact, a larger screen could result in a slightly taller or wider form factor. This raises practical considerations, such as how the device fits in your hand or pocket. Apple's ability to balance ergonomic design with increased screen size will be critical in making sure the iPhone 17 remains both functional and comfortable for everyday use. To address these challenges, Apple could explore innovative design solutions, such as curved edges or a thinner chassis, to maintain a sleek and manageable profile. Additionally, the use of lightweight materials could help offset any increase in size, making sure that the device remains easy to handle and carry. What This Means for Apple's Design Strategy The rumored shift to larger displays represents a potential evolution in Apple's approach to smartphone design. By carefully balancing screen size, usability, and aesthetics, Apple has the opportunity to deliver a device that meets the demands of modern users while staying true to its design principles. This move could also signal Apple's intent to further differentiate its flagship devices from competitors, offering a unique blend of functionality and style. While these changes remain speculative, they highlight Apple's ongoing commitment to innovation and its ability to adapt to shifting market trends. If the iPhone 17 does indeed feature larger displays, it could set a new standard for smartphone design, reinforcing Apple's position as a leader in the industry. As more details emerge, the potential impact of these changes will undoubtedly continue to generate excitement and anticipation among users and industry observers alike. Franchón Crews-Dezurn faces Citlalli Ortiz on Friday in world championship bout
Franchón Crews-Dezurn will defend her WBC super-middleweight title on Friday against Mexican-American challenger Citlalli Ortiz. Crews-Dezurn, 9-2 (2), will be defending her title over ten rounds at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, in a bout that will be broadcast live and exclusive on DAZN. The event will take place as part of this weekend's induction at the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2023, Crews-Dezurn made her way to England where she lost a majority decision at the Manchester Arena to Savannah Marshall. After that, she made her way back to the US, where she won the vacant WBC title in December 2023 against Shadasia Green. Catch all the latest boxing action on DAZN Crews-Dezurn's other loss came when making her debut against Claressa Shields in 2016. That fight saw her lose a unanimous decision over four rounds. This weekend's fight marks the first defence of her title. Her opponent, Ortiz, 4-1 (1), last fought in July 2023 when she outpointed Jordanne Garcia in Albuquerque, New Mexico. So far, Ortiz's only loss has been an eight-round split decision against Diana Tapia Castro in their 2022 rematch. A professional since 2021, Ortiz won her first three fights before that loss to Tapia Castro in March 2022. She then fought her most-recent fight, against Garcia, in July 2023. Ortiz's Instagram profile indicates that she was a six-time Mexican national champion during her amateur career, alongside being a seven-time US national champion. She also won medals at the Pan-American and Central American Games and was a world youth champion in 2017. Her amateur record is indicated to have been 27-6 (3). According to the WBC's official rankings, Ortiz is currently ranked eighth within the organisation behind Raquel Miller, Lani Daniels, Shadasia Green, Melinda Watpool, Lina Tejada, Bolatito Oluwole, and Elin Cederroos. Interestingly, neither Crews-Dezurn nor Ortiz are ranked within BoxRec for their weight class due to inactivity. The top-ranked female at super-middleweight, according to the site, is Shadasia Green, 15-1 (11), followed by Hanna Gabriels, 22-2-1 (13); Melinda Watpool, 7-1 (2); Adriana Dos Santos Araujo, 6-3 (1); and Wendy Gcado, 4-1-1 (0).
