Messi and Alba suspended for one match for missing MLS All-Star

The Hindu25-07-2025
Lionel Messi has been suspended for one game after sitting out the MLS All-Star Game without prior approval, the league said on Friday (July 25, 2025).
The Inter Miami forward and his teammate, Jordi Alba, did not compete on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) despite not being injured, even though they were included in the All-Star roster.
"Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match," MLS said in a statement.
The suspension will see Messi, the league's main attraction, miss Inter Miami's match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday (July 26, 2025). Cincinnati lead the Eastern Conference standings.
Messi has scored 18 goals so far this season.
"I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player - or anyone - who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement.
"Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision."
All-Star competitions are a mainstay of North American sports, where the men's "Big Four" leagues use the exhibitions to boost their players' profiles, but a rarity in professional soccer.
"We're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve," said Garber.
Messi rested this week, according to Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano.
"Look, players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days," Mascherano was quoted as saying by ESPN.

Pete Alonso hits 252nd home run to match Darryl Strawberry for Mets record

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 252nd career home run Saturday night, tying the New York Mets record held by Darryl Strawberry for 37 years. The 30-year-old Alonso connected against Milwaukee Brewers starter Tobias Myers leading off the second inning for his 26th homer this season, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. The 413-foot shot to left-center came on a 1-2 fastball at the top of the strike zone. It was Alonso's fourth homer in eight games, since he went deep Aug. 1 against San Francisco to end an 0-for-19 slump. A homegrown star drafted by the Mets in 2016, Alonso broke into the big leagues with a bang in 2019, hitting 53 home runs to set a major league rookie record and establish a franchise high for a single season. The five-time All-Star has reached 40 two other times and been one of the most consistent sluggers in baseball since his arrival. After a protracted negotiation, he returned to the Mets as a free agent in February on a $54 million, two-year contract that includes a $24 million player option for 2026, which Alonso will likely decline. The only other active players who lead their current franchise in home runs are Manny Machado (Padres) and Mike Trout (Angels). Giancarlo Stanton, now with the New York Yankees, holds the Miami mark with 267 for the Marlins. Strawberry broke the previous Mets record with his 155th home run on May 3, 1988, passing Dave Kingman. The sweet-swinging outfielder hit 252 in 1,109 games for New York during his first eight major league seasons from 1983-90. He later played for the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees, finishing his 17-year career with 335 homers. Alonso played his 963rd game Saturday night. The durable first baseman has appeared in 370 straight, a team record. The Diamondbacks and Padres are the lone major league clubs that haven't had a player hit more than 252 homers for them. Luis Gonzalez holds the Arizona record with 224, and Machado entered Saturday with 187 for San Diego.

Sliding Mystics, Wings look to end losing skids

The Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings both shook up their rosters at the trade deadline. Since then, however, the moves haven't yielded wins. HT Image After being involved in all five in-season trades this year, and the three deals closer to the deadline, Washington and Dallas have each lost four in a row as the two sides meet again on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. The Mystics (13-17) shockingly traded leading scorer Brittney Sykes (15.4 points per game) to the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, further cementing their status as a rebuilding team. "Everybody just has to step it up a little bit more," Mystics center Shakira Austin said after Sykes was traded. "There's no pressure for anyone to get up more shots, but we do have to find a new flow. We do have to find what works best." Trading the All-Star guard has left a void of scoring production in the backcourt. In the two games since, starting guards Sug Sutton and Jade Melbourne haven't filled it. The pair has combined for 20 points on 9-for-30 shooting from the field in the last two contests. Dallas dealt wing DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx last week, ending a solid-but-inconsistent season with the Wings. Carrington averaged 10.4 points per game, third-most on the team, but shot 35.4 percent from the field and 26 percent from 3-point range. She also missed about a month of games with a rib injury and had been coming off the bench since mid-June. "When we were approached, we looked at the outcome and saw a chance to get young assets," Wings general manager Curt Miller said. "Still, it was hard to lose someone like DiJonai, especially given our relationship." The Wings (8-23) are clearly heading back to the lottery after this season, but the excellence of rookie guard Paige Bueckers has been the highlight of the year in Dallas. Bueckers has scored at least 20 points in four straight games -- although she missed Friday's 88-77 loss to the New York Liberty with a back injury and her status for Sunday's game hasn't yet been firmed up. The UConn product also had 20 against the Mystics on June 22, the teams' first matchup of the season and a 91-88 overtime win for host Washington. Dallas claimed the rematch six days later, a 79-71 home victory, without Bueckers. Washington's All-Star rookie guard Sonia Citron recorded a 20-point double- double -- 22 points and 10 rebounds in the first game followed by 27 points and 11 boards in the second -- in both games. --Field Level Media

Self-taught Pranav shows mettle

V Pranav CHENNAI: V Pranav's last few months have moved at the pace of a blitz clock. November 2024 brought him the Chennai Grand Masters challengers title, December saw him strike double gold at the Youth Worlds, and in March this year, he was crowned world junior champion. The Chennai boy's triumph in the challengers last season promoted him to the masters table this year. In a bold and rare move for someone stepping into this league, the 18-year-old has been his own coach for a few months. His campaign here began on an even keel: a composed draw with Karthikeyan Murali in the opener, followed by a stumble against current sole leader Vincent Keymer. On Saturday, playing with black pieces against seasoned Dutch GM Anish Giri, the youngest player in the tournament faced his toughest test yet. The second-seeded Anish was in the driver's seat and enjoyed a dream position, but Pranav hung in and walked away with a draw. Speaking after the hard-earned draw, Pranav said: 'For the past few months, I've been training by myself. I just wanted to try something different because I like doing this stuff myself... It will really help my chess a lot. I think the more work I do on my own, the better I will get. 'Let's say for this tournament, preparing for opponents would be one of the main things. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo I've been choosing for myself what to play and trying to find what I can do on my own. I think in the future it will really help.' Chennai GM organiser N Srinath told TOI that it's unusual for a player to go without a coach during the transitional stage of his career. 'It's definitely not common, but maybe he is in between changing two coaches,' Srinath said. Being his own coach, Pranav knows he tends to push too hard in some games and is working on fixing that. 'The year started very well, but after that, in a few open tournaments, I did not perform that well. Mostly it was just that in many games I was pushing a lot. I think that was the main issue, especially against lower-rated players, I was just not taking a draw (even when) in equal positions. These things happen and I just tried to rectify those mistakes. I think it's just my style. From a very young age, even if I'm playing a higher-rated player, I never… even if they offered a draw, I never took it,' said Pranav, who was last training under Shyam Sundar at Chess Thulir Academy. In the day's other results, Keymer made short work of Karthikeyan to stay perched at the top with a perfect three points. Breathing down his neck is Arjun Erigaisi on 2.5, after he outplayed Ray Robson. And the all-Indian duel between Vidit Gujrathi and Nihal Sarin was the last to finish, delivering plenty of drama. With the black pieces, Nihal surprised in the opening and gained a sizable edge on the clock, but Vidit steered into a stronger position. The contest remained balanced until a late blunder from Nihal turned the game decisively. Vidit converted with precision, handing his compatriot a second difficult loss after an intense fight. In the Challengers, Abhimanyu Puranik, M Pranesh, and Leon Luke Mendonca won their respective games, while B Adhiban and D Harika, and Aryan Chopra and Diptayan Ghosh, shared the points. Results: Round 3: Masters: Vincent Keymer bt Karthikeyan Murali; Arjun Erigaisi bt Ray Robson; Awonder Liang bt Jorden van Foreest; V Pranav drew with Anish Giri; Vidit Gujrathi bt Nihal Sarin.
