Police probe viral video of roadside riot in Butterworth
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman said a local man lodged a report at the Butterworth police station in connection with the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred when the complainant tried to assist a suspect who had been involved in a road accident while riding a motorcycle and was lying on the road.
"Suddenly, the suspect got up and punched the complainant and incited several people at the scene to start a fight.
"The cause of the incident was that while the suspect was lying on the road, he allegedly heard offensive remarks from unidentified members of the public nearby," he said in a statement.
Anuar said efforts were ongoing to trace and arrest the suspect.
The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
He also urged the public not to speculate or sensationalise the case in a manner that could disrupt public order or interfere with ongoing investigations.
"Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Muhammad Adib Ikmal Sukri, at 04-576 2222 (extension 2275) or any of the nearest police stations," he added.
