FBI franchise viewers left furious after sudden series cancellation

Independent06-03-2025

Two US dramas have been suddenly cancelled despite having solid viewers, leaving fans infuriated.
FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, successful procedural spin-offs of CBS ' FBI franchise, are officially drawing to a close after six seasons and four seasons, respectively.
Just like with the departure of Most Wanted star Alexa Davalos in 2023, the announcement has caused confusion among the fandom, especially as the show's appeared to be commercially successful – but it's been reported that the decision stemmed from the network's desire to cut costs.
However, fans are pointing out that it most probably has something to do with the forthcoming spin-off FBI: CIA. Many believe that the network is making way for the new show, which has led to the demise of one of the current spin-offs.
This has left fans particularly infuriated by the shows' unceremonious cancellations.
'I knew one would be cancelled to make way for FBI:CIA but thought they'd keep one,' a viewer said, with another angrily adding: WHAT THE F*** CBS?? WE DON'T WANT A NEW SPINOFF. WE WANT THE SHOWS AND CHARACTERS WE ALREADY LOVE.'
An additional fan concurred: 'No one asked for another FBI spin off, no one wanted this,' with another stating on X/Twitter: 'Did anyone even ask for an FBI: CIA? Anyone?'
Some of the cancelled show's lead cast members – including Most Wanted 's Dylan McDermott and Shantel VanSanten and International 's Jesse Lee Soffer – may be out of a job having moved from the main FBI show to the spin-offs.
However, the Dick Wolf-produced shows often see characters move from one show to the next, so their return to the main series is possible.
Deadline also reports that the shows have a few episodes left to shoot, so will receive series finales as opposed to ending on a cliffhanger, which was a fate suffered by the cancelled NCIS: Hawaii in May 2024.
FBI: Most Wanted, created by René Balcer, premiered in 2020 while FBI: International, created by Wolf and Derek Haas, followed in 2021.
The main FBI show is currently on its seventh season, but received a three-season order, meaning it will remain on air until at least its ninth season in 2027. It started in 2018.

2025 Tony Awards: How to watch, what time, who's hosting, nominations and more

The biggest night in theater is back Sunday as fans gear up for the 78th annual Tony Awards, which gave nods to nearly three dozen Broadway shows. Here's what to know. How to watch The awards show takes place Sunday at New York City's Radio City Music Hall, running from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. The show will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Some awards will also be announced during a preshow broadcast, hosted by Darren Criss (nominated this year for the first time for 'Maybe Happy Ending') and Renée Elise Goldsberry (who won a Tony in 2016 for her role in 'Hamilton'), that will air on Pluto TV beginning at 6:40 p.m. ET. Who is hosting and presenting? Cynthia Erivo, who starred alongside Ariana Grande in the record-breaking film adaptation of the Broadway musical 'Wicked,' will be hosting this year's main show. Erivo got her own Tony Award in 2016 for her performance as Celie in 'The Color Purple.' She's also a Grammy and an Emmy winner. 'Cynthia is a remarkable talent and with her deep roots in the theater community, we are honored to have her host this year's Tony Awards on CBS,' Mackenzie Mitchell, CBS' vice president of specials, said in a statement. 'There is no doubt with her innate creativity and captivating presence, she will deliver an unforgettable evening highlighting the extraordinary achievements of this Broadway season.' Erivo is taking over the reins from three-time host Ariana DeBose, who will return to the stage as a presenter. Other stars, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Samuel L. Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Paulson and Charli D'Amelio, are also expected to present. Expect a night of performances In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of 'Hamilton,' the original cast is slated to reunite for a special performance. The night will also be filled with performances from the casts of 'Buena Vista Social Club,' 'Dead Outlaw,' 'Death Becomes Her,' 'Floyd Collins,' 'Gypsy,' 'Maybe Happy Ending,' 'Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical,' 'Pirates! The Penzance Musical,' 'Sunset Boulevard,' 'Just in Time' and 'Real Women Have Curves.' A look at the nominees Nominations run across 26 categories, with a full list of nominees available on the Tony Awards website. A few groups and individuals, however, will receive special awards on Sunday. One award will go to the musicians who make up the band in 'Buena Vista Social Club,' while another award will be presented for the illusions and technical effects of 'Stranger Things: The First Shadow.' Four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein will get a special award for lifetime achievement in the theater. 'Harvey Fierstein's contributions to the American theatre, both as an artist and activist, represent an extraordinary legacy,' Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, and Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League, said in a statement. And Celia Keenan-Bolger will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award, which honors a member of the theater community who has 'made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations,' according to the Tony Awards. The 2025 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will also be presented to PBS' long-running 'Great Performances,' theatrical producer Michael Price, performing arts nonprofit New 42 and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. A potentially history-making night Audra McDonald, who holds the record for the most acting wins with six Tony Awards, could bolster her lead even more if she wins this year for her performance in 'Gypsy.' Kara Young, the first Black actress to be nominated for a Tony four years in a row, could also become the first Black person to win two consecutive Tony Awards. She is nominated this year for her performance in 'Purpose.' Daniel Dae Kim, who received his first Tony nomination for his performance in 'Yellow Face,' became the first Asian nominee in the category of best leading actor in a play. And Marjan Neshat and Tala Ashe, who star alongside each other in 'English,' are competing in the same category on Sunday. Both have a chance to become the first female performers of Iranian descent to win a Tony Award.

'Exquisite' Amazon Prime show cancelled after only one series

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Amazon Prime Video have cancelled the TV series Étoile in spite of its impressive 85% fresh critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Helmed by Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Étoile had initially been greenlit by the streaming service for two seasons. Debuting in April this year, its story followed the directors of two rival ballet companies as they attempted to save their institutions from collapse. In a last-ditch effort to save these world-renowned institutions, they hatch a plan to switch leading ladies, swapping their most talented stars in an ambitious gambit. Starring Luke Kirby and Nymphomaniac star Charlotte Gainsbourg as the ballet companies' directors, it was released to strong word of mouth and favourable reception from viewers. However, that apparently hasn't been enough to save Étoile, which has reportedly been axed after only one series. Fans reacted to the news with dismay on social media, with many writing of their disappointment that another show had met its end so prematurely. 'Amazon keeps cancelling the few shows on Prime I enjoy. Such shame for Etoile,' wrote marsjfields. 'Amazon Prime u are DEAD to me (My Lady Jane, Wheel of Time and now Etoile?????)' said suvanias. 'Étoile on Amazon Prime Video is reportedly being cancelled according to Deadline. Hard to believe this is not a stunt to attract more viewership. The show is phenomenal. Heartbroken if true. Loved the show,' commented danpavacic. Those reacting with disappointment are in sync with its positive Rotten Tomatoes score – having garnered an 85% 'Fresh' approval rating from critics on the review aggregator. 'Étoile is one of the most perfect, and I don't use that term lightly, pilots I've ever seen,' wrote Neely Swanson of the Beverley Hills Courier. 'As ravishing as it feels radical,' said Joey Moser of The Contending. Contributing a 76% score, audiences were just as full of praise, with the user Madison J describing it as a 'fabulous show with exquisite talent, a great story line and gorgeous scenes.' In April, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino weighed in on whether the second series would come to pass, telling Variety: 'You'll have to ask Amazon.' 'It's pending,' agreed husband and co-creator Daniel. Sadly, it looks as though that second series never will come to pass, unless Amazon, for some reason,n decide to pirouette on their decision to axe. The ballet comedy-drama was the latest collaboration from Gilmore Girls duo Amy and Daniel, who subsequently worked together on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. More Trending Their most beloved hit ended in 2007 with a follow-up miniseries in 2016, but fans remain hopeful that the Gilmore girls might one day return. Last year, star Lauren Graham reunited with screen mum Kelly Bishop, giving fresh hope that Friday night dinners might one day resume service. Series creator Amy weighed in on the chances of another revival, telling Variety: 'It would be delightful. We love the actors, we love the world, we love writing those characters. The time just has to be right. It's alchemy.' View More » Series One of Étoile is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video. Got a story?
