'Exquisite' Amazon Prime show cancelled after only one series

Amazon Prime Video have cancelled the TV series Étoile in spite of its impressive 85% fresh critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Helmed by Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Étoile had initially been greenlit by the streaming service for two seasons.
Debuting in April this year, its story followed the directors of two rival ballet companies as they attempted to save their institutions from collapse.
In a last-ditch effort to save these world-renowned institutions, they hatch a plan to switch leading ladies, swapping their most talented stars in an ambitious gambit.
Starring Luke Kirby and Nymphomaniac star Charlotte Gainsbourg as the ballet companies' directors, it was released to strong word of mouth and favourable reception from viewers.
However, that apparently hasn't been enough to save Étoile, which has reportedly been axed after only one series.
Fans reacted to the news with dismay on social media, with many writing of their disappointment that another show had met its end so prematurely.
'Amazon keeps cancelling the few shows on Prime I enjoy. Such shame for Etoile,' wrote marsjfields.
'Amazon Prime u are DEAD to me (My Lady Jane, Wheel of Time and now Etoile?????)' said suvanias.
'Étoile on Amazon Prime Video is reportedly being cancelled according to Deadline. Hard to believe this is not a stunt to attract more viewership. The show is phenomenal. Heartbroken if true. Loved the show,' commented danpavacic.
Those reacting with disappointment are in sync with its positive Rotten Tomatoes score – having garnered an 85% 'Fresh' approval rating from critics on the review aggregator.
'Étoile is one of the most perfect, and I don't use that term lightly, pilots I've ever seen,' wrote Neely Swanson of the Beverley Hills Courier.
'As ravishing as it feels radical,' said Joey Moser of The Contending.
Contributing a 76% score, audiences were just as full of praise, with the user Madison J describing it as a 'fabulous show with exquisite talent, a great story line and gorgeous scenes.'
In April, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino weighed in on whether the second series would come to pass, telling Variety: 'You'll have to ask Amazon.'
'It's pending,' agreed husband and co-creator Daniel.
Sadly, it looks as though that second series never will come to pass, unless Amazon, for some reason,n decide to pirouette on their decision to axe.
The ballet comedy-drama was the latest collaboration from Gilmore Girls duo Amy and Daniel, who subsequently worked together on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. More Trending
Their most beloved hit ended in 2007 with a follow-up miniseries in 2016, but fans remain hopeful that the Gilmore girls might one day return.
Last year, star Lauren Graham reunited with screen mum Kelly Bishop, giving fresh hope that Friday night dinners might one day resume service.
Series creator Amy weighed in on the chances of another revival, telling Variety: 'It would be delightful. We love the actors, we love the world, we love writing those characters. The time just has to be right. It's alchemy.'

The film has stirred up quite the conversation among fans, with one standout review on Letterboxd proclaiming: "13 years old saoirse ronan was robbed of that oscar for her performance as THE DEVIL." Things are getting nasty in the Dales after the discovery of Nate's body and accusations are levelled at two likely suspects. John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) – the actual perpetrator – is questioned by police, but not over his own possible guilt, Cain is the one in the frame. After arguing with Nate before he died, he is prime suspect. John does some quick thinking and talking to get Cain Dingle's (Jeff Hordley) name off the suspect list, and after Cain's own grilling by the police, he airs his suspicions that Tracy's dodgy behaviour makes her look guilty. So those are the two suspects, Cain and Tracy. John then does the unthinkable to secure Cain's freedom – he plants Nate's phone in the playhouse at Tracy's. When the police show up with a warrant, Tracy thinks she's done for when they find the mobile tucked away. Amazon Prime fans ‘livid' as show with ‘so much potential' cancelled
The new dramedy has been axed by Amazon Prime Video after just one season, despite the fact the series was initially commissioned for two Prime Video subscribers are livid as a gripping new drama series has been axed after just one season. The dance dramedy Étoile, crafted by Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel writers Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, sadly won't be making a comeback for a second series. This is despite the fact that the streamer originally commissioned the series for two seasons, leaving fans of the show particularly miffed. Set in both New York and Paris, the series features Luke Kirby as Jack McMillan and Charlotte Gainsbourg as Geneviève Lavigne, two artistic directors of prestigious ballet schools who decide to exchange their most gifted stars to rescue their companies. French principal ballerina Cheyenne Toussaint (portrayed by Lou de Laâge) heads to New York to be trained by Jack, while American choreographer Tobias Bell (Gideon Glick) joins Geneviève in Paris, reports the Mirror US. All eight episodes were launched in late April and were eagerly awaited by fans following the success of the Palladinos' previous hit comedy-dramas. Despite not being quite the runaway success Prime Video was evidently hoping for, Étoile garnered a passionate cult following who have taken to social media to lament the disappointing decision. Outrage erupted on X (formerly Twitter), as one fan vented: "you have to allow audience word of mouth to spread give it another chance Etoile is amazing and so is Amy Sherman Palladino you have to give shows time like we did in the 2000s cause people keep going back to them cause there timeless and well spaced." Another viewer expressed their dismay: "what's the point of creating art to cancel it for some reasons? I mean, etoile was good as hell, it was brilliant I don't understand what happened." An additional fan expressed their anger: "the way étoile was gaining more and more traction EVERY DAY (mostly through word of mouth) and amazon decided to cancel it less than two months after it premiered. i'm livid." Frustrated demands were aimed at @PrimeVideo: "@PrimeVideo how dare you cancel étoile after it ALREADY HAVING A SEASON TWO???? what is wrong with you," voiced a fourth supporter. The dismay over the scrapping of potential extended onto Reddit forums, where numerous individuals aired their grievances. One said with regret: "Gosh the show really found its groove in the later half of the season, I think season 2 had a lot of potential. Sad that we'll never see it." A disappointed viewer added: "I took a chance because this was a ASP show but this is the last time I'm watching a show that hasn't already released several seasons. "The way they're just canceling shows now is some bulls***. The cast should be very proud of themselves." Speculation remains whether a platform such as Netflix might swoop in to rescue Étoile, leaving many loyal viewers holding out hope for an unexpected revival.
