Ballet Dramedy Etoile Will No Longer Have A Second Season

Last Updated: As per reports, the decision to cancel the second season comes in the wake of performance vs cost disputes. In disappointing news for Etoile fans, Prime Video has confirmed that the ballet dramedy will not be returning for a second season. Created by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel duo Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the show had initially been granted a two-season commitment. However, despite debuting in late April to positive reviews from both critics and viewers, the series has now been shelved. At the time, all eight episodes were dropped simultaneously on Prime Video. It is worth mentioning that in the Palladinos' follow-up to the critical and commercial hit, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, they received an initial order for two seasons in 2023. While most multi-season orders result in multiple runs, there have also been exceptions, as there is still an evaluation process after series receive approval with contingencies built in. According to a Deadline report, the decision came largely due to disputes over 'performance versus cost." On the other hand, it could also be attributed to the recent internal restructuring at Amazon with the former studio head's exit and Mike Hopkins taking over. What Is Etoile About? Said to be a passion project for Sherman-Palladino, Etoile is a story of dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies in New York and Paris. They will be seen embarking on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars. The show came as a deterrent for many casual viewers beyond their loyal fan base who have been following her from the iconic Gilmore Girls to Bunheads and the Emmy-winning Mrs Maisel. While the show is currently not returning for a second season, fans can stream the first part on Prime Video. First Published:

Wanda Sykes delivers epic 26-minute acceptance speech

Wanda Sykes closed the night in typical bombastic and hilarious fashion at the Critics Choice Association's Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television on Friday night in Los Angeles, delivering an impromptu speech that ran the gamut from community organizing to admitting she hasn't seen the Amazon Prime show 'Etoile.' Sykes was awarded the last trophy of the evening, for career achievement, wrapping a show that saw other LGBTQ-identifying stars acknowledged for their work over the past year, including Nathan Lee Graham from 'Mid-Century Modern' and the cast of 'Somebody Somewhere.' As Sykes began her speech, she held onto one of the cards that was on every table at the event, listing the evening's winners. She joked that she should have stopped drinking by the time Liv Hewson – who was awarded a rising star statuette for their work on 'Yellowjackets' toward the middle of the evening – came onstage. Admitting she had not written a prepared speech – 'I didn't know it was going to be this big of a deal,' she quipped – Sykes then proceeded to go down the list of winners and mention every single one, including her 'Other Two' costar Gideon Glick, who was recognized for his supporting work on 'Etoile' (Glick's win was bittersweet; while it was his birthday and the entire room broke out into a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' for him, news broke mere hours before the award show began that 'Etoile' has been canceled after one season). 'I didn't watch the show,' Sykes jokingly admitted on stage after talking about how much she loved Glick's speech earlier, in which he reminisced about his mother's acceptance of him when he came out at 12 and some of the struggles he later faced as a working LGBTQ+ actor. Sykes – who was recognized for her work in standup and as a film and television actor – also called out CCA award-winners Megan Stalter of 'Hacks' and 'Saturday Night Live' cast member Bowen Yang, both of whom she thanked for being unapologetically, and hilariously, themselves. About Sasheer Zamata – who won a breakthrough performance award for her work on 'Agatha All Along' and mentioned during her speech that she came out as queer last year – Sykes joked that she knew the former 'SNL' cast member was queer before Zamata did. Toward the end of her speech, Sykes addressed the reality TV award winners of the night, the Season 17 drag queens of 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' calling the show a 'staple.' 'Y'all were out there making noise for us before all of this,' Sykes said, gesturing to the event, before adding, 'Drag queens have always been the leaders, the fighters.' Finally, Sykes shouted out Niecy Nash-Betts, who had been awarded the groundbreaker award just before her, joking that the 'the LGBTQ+ community is such fire, that we got a new member, we got Niecy!' She also thanked Nash-Betts' wife Jessica Betts 'for doing your job.' (Nash-Betts and Betts got married in 2020.) To conclude her speech, Sykes addressed the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, but also said that protecting the trans segment of the community is 'our fight,' since 'they are getting their asses kicked right now.' 'We just got to love hard. So that means you gotta be proud, you gotta be loud, we have to protect our trans brothers and sisters,' she said. 'Thats our next movement.'

'Exquisite' Amazon Prime show cancelled after only one series

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Amazon Prime Video have cancelled the TV series Étoile in spite of its impressive 85% fresh critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Helmed by Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Étoile had initially been greenlit by the streaming service for two seasons. Debuting in April this year, its story followed the directors of two rival ballet companies as they attempted to save their institutions from collapse. In a last-ditch effort to save these world-renowned institutions, they hatch a plan to switch leading ladies, swapping their most talented stars in an ambitious gambit. Starring Luke Kirby and Nymphomaniac star Charlotte Gainsbourg as the ballet companies' directors, it was released to strong word of mouth and favourable reception from viewers. However, that apparently hasn't been enough to save Étoile, which has reportedly been axed after only one series. Fans reacted to the news with dismay on social media, with many writing of their disappointment that another show had met its end so prematurely. 'Amazon keeps cancelling the few shows on Prime I enjoy. Such shame for Etoile,' wrote marsjfields. 'Amazon Prime u are DEAD to me (My Lady Jane, Wheel of Time and now Etoile?????)' said suvanias. 'Étoile on Amazon Prime Video is reportedly being cancelled according to Deadline. Hard to believe this is not a stunt to attract more viewership. The show is phenomenal. Heartbroken if true. Loved the show,' commented danpavacic. Those reacting with disappointment are in sync with its positive Rotten Tomatoes score – having garnered an 85% 'Fresh' approval rating from critics on the review aggregator. 'Étoile is one of the most perfect, and I don't use that term lightly, pilots I've ever seen,' wrote Neely Swanson of the Beverley Hills Courier. 'As ravishing as it feels radical,' said Joey Moser of The Contending. Contributing a 76% score, audiences were just as full of praise, with the user Madison J describing it as a 'fabulous show with exquisite talent, a great story line and gorgeous scenes.' In April, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino weighed in on whether the second series would come to pass, telling Variety: 'You'll have to ask Amazon.' 'It's pending,' agreed husband and co-creator Daniel. Sadly, it looks as though that second series never will come to pass, unless Amazon, for some reason,n decide to pirouette on their decision to axe. The ballet comedy-drama was the latest collaboration from Gilmore Girls duo Amy and Daniel, who subsequently worked together on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. More Trending Their most beloved hit ended in 2007 with a follow-up miniseries in 2016, but fans remain hopeful that the Gilmore girls might one day return. Last year, star Lauren Graham reunited with screen mum Kelly Bishop, giving fresh hope that Friday night dinners might one day resume service. Series creator Amy weighed in on the chances of another revival, telling Variety: 'It would be delightful. We love the actors, we love the world, we love writing those characters. The time just has to be right. It's alchemy.' View More » Series One of Étoile is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video. Got a story? Etoile canceled after one season at Amazon, despite two-season order

Etoile has danced its last dance. The Amazon Prime Video series from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has been canceled after one season, in spite of the fact that it was initially given a two-season order by Amazon back in 2023, per Variety. The news of the show's cancellation comes roughly six weeks after the series first premiered on Amazon in mid-April and garnered generally positive reviews. The show follows two struggling dance companies in New York and Paris who decide to switch their principal dancers in the hopes of saving their companies. Recommended Videos In spite of generally positive reviews, the show never cracked the Nielsen Top 10, and it filmed on location in both New York and Paris, which undoubtedly made the prospect of giving it a second season somewhat daunting. The series was given its initial greenlight by a previous administration at Amazon MGM Studios, headed by Jennifer Salke. Salke left that role after seven years in March, just a month before the series was set to premiere. The show's binge model release, once the default for streaming service, has become increasingly rare on Amazon Prime Video. Dropping all eight episodes at once, especially for a new series, leaves very little time for word of mouth to spread. Given the expense of filming the show on location, though, it's possible that the show was always going to be a tough sell for renewal. Coming off the success of Maisel, though, it seems like Amazon wanted to give Sherman-Palladino a blank check. Unfortunately, Etoile didn't cash in.
