Jennifer Aniston says 'Friends' cast was 'mourning' Matthew Perry long before his death: 'Part of me thinks this is better'

"I'm glad he's out of that pain," the "Friends" alum adds.
Jennifer Aniston is still grappling with Matthew Perry's death almost two years later.
In a recent profile for Vanity Fair, the Morning Show star recalled the last time she and Perry reunited with their costars, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer for the show's 2021 special Friends: The Reunion.
Unbeknownst to the six stars, the reunion would serve as a "final curtain call" for their group. Perry died on Oct. 28, 2023, from the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects listed as contributing factors. He was 54.
"We did everything we could when we could," Aniston told the outlet of her and her costars' attempts to help the actor with his longtime struggle with addiction. "But it almost felt like we'd been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight."
Perry openly discussed his decades-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as his friends' efforts to help him, in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. He became an outspoken substance abuse treatment advocate during his career. In 2013, he turned his former Malibu, Calif., home into a sober living facility called the Perry House, which ran for two years. He was regularly candid about his addiction struggles and difficult journey to sobriety.
In his memoir, Perry recalled how Aniston was the first costar to confront him about his troubles despite him never having been drunk on set.
Perry called the confrontation a "scary" moment during an interview with Diane Sawyer in 2022. He told Sawyer that Aniston remained in close contact with him during those dark times. "She was the one that reached out the most," Perry said. "You know, I'm really grateful to her for that."
Looking back on Perry's struggles, Aniston shared told Vanity Fair, "As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there's a part of me that thinks this is better."
"I'm glad he's out of that pain," she added.
News of Perry's sudden death sent shockwaves across Hollywood. His tight-knit Friends costars issued a joint statement about the "unfathomable loss" before sharing their own homages. In her own tribute, Aniston said the loss of her "little brother" Perry has "cut deep."
"Having to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I've never experienced before," Aniston wrote on social media at the time. "We all experience loss at some point in our lives. Being able to really SIT in this grief allows you to feel the moments of joy and gratitude for having loved someone that deep. And we loved him deeply."
Added Aniston, "Matty, I love you so much and I know you are now completely at peace and out of any pain. I talk to you every day… sometimes I can almost hear you saying 'could you BE any crazier?'"
Speaking with Variety in December 2023 in her first interview following Perry's death, an emotional Aniston said she hopes her late costar is remembered "as he said he'd love to be remembered' — someone who lived well and loved to help others. (The actor wrote candidly about his addiction struggles in his 2022 memoir, writing in an excerpt, 'When I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people.')
"I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy," said Aniston. "He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard."Perry's personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa and an alleged drug dealer known as "the Ketamine Queen" of North Hollywood, Jasveen Sangha, were among the five people charged last August for distributing ketamine to Perry during the final weeks of his life. All but Sangha have agreed to plead guilty in exchange for their cooperation.

Delusional Jussie Smollett remains as shameless as ever as he points the finger of blame at everyone else

Don't call it a comeback. Call it another shameless and truth-challenged stab at relevancy. Hate-crime hoaxer extraordinaire Jussie Smollett wants to return to show biz. And with the unmitigated gall of O.J. Simpson claiming he's still looking for the real killer, the disgraced 'Empire' actor wants everyone to know who the real bad guys are. 'The villains are the two people who assaulted me, the Chicago Police Department and, if I may be so brave, the mayor [Rahm Emanuel],' Smollet told Variety in a fluff piece meant to smooth the road for his imminent reboot. 6 Jusse Smollett is trying to reboot his career with a stint on Fox's 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test' and shameless, continued claims that he was the victim of a race attack and a corrupt mayor and police force. FOX Yes, the perpetual victim is sticking to his infamous story about a 2019 'beatdown' — and channeling the great modern philosopher Shaggy, who once said, 'It wasn't me.' Smollett has a new R&B album to promote and will be competing on Fox's reality show, 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test' Plus, he was interviewed for the documentary 'The Truth about Jussie Smollett?' premiering August 22 on Netflix. But it matters not which projects he has in the pipeline or in his past. The greatest performance of the actor's life will always be playing the role of an innocent and wronged man. According to Smollett, he was assaulted for his skin color and sexuality — and tossed to the wolves by a corrupt mayor and law enforcement attempting to shift attention from their botched handling of a police-involved fatal shooting in 2014. 6 In a 2019 interview with Robin Roberts, Smollett complained that some folks doubted his story about being attacked in Chicago. ABC News It's simply too rich for words. But shame has never been his strong suit. 'We're living in a world where the higher-ups, their main mission, in order to do all of the underhanded things that they're doing, is to distract us with the shiny object,' Smollett told Variety. I would say he's living in a bubble of delusion if he thinks anyone is buying the baloney he's peddling. Smollett's concocted MAGA fantasy was truly something. He claimed to have left his Chicago apartment at 2 a.m. — during a polar vortex — to grab a delicacy from Jared Fogle's preferred sandwich shop. 6 Brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo said that Smollett paid them to choreograph the attack on him. Suddenly, Smollett alleged, a masked man screamed, 'Empire!' followed by a gay slur, another 'Empire' and then an anti-black slur. The attacker screamed 'This is MAGA country' and punched him in the face. Then a second man joined, and the pair worked him like a tag team on 'Monday Night Raw.' Only after they left did Smollett realize they had placed a noose around his neck and doused him in bleach. The tale was so insane, he should be banned from ever touching a script with his own pen. Still, sympathy poured in from boldface believers. After all, it was 2019, a time when the truth mattered less than the perception of victimhood. On Twitter, then-Sen. Kamala Harris called it 'an attempted modern day lynching.' Robin Roberts landed an exclusive interview with Smollett on 'Good Morning America,' where he cried and shook his fists at the doubters. If only his attackers were 'Muslim or Mexican or someone black,' he would have more support, dammit. 6 Smollett was arrested less than a month after claiming he was attacked in 2019. CPD He declared himself the 'gay Tupac.' Most sensible people smelled a rat. Then a pair of Nigerian-American siblings, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo — who had been extras on 'Empire' — were busted. During questioning, the brothers Osundairo said Smollett had planned and paid for the beatdown. They even claimed there had been a dress rehearsal. Smollett was arrested for filing a false police report. Charges were initially dropped in exchange for community service and bond forfeiture. The city of Chicago sued him for reimbursement of the money wasted investigating his hoax — and he had the stones to sue right back, claiming he was the victim of 'mass public ridicule and harm.' 6 In his 2019 special 'Sticks & Stones,' Dave Chappelle mocked Smollett's account, calling him 'Juicy Smollye.' Netflix He was indicted again, found guilty, and his conviction was upheld on appeal. In 2024, the verdict was tossed on a technicality. He was not exonerated. Back in May, he soft-launched his return on instagram, writing, 'This false narrative has left a stain on my character that will not soon disappear.' Subtract the word 'false' and this is the most honest statement the man has ever made. He's a spotlight-craving fabulist who exploited racial tensions to increase his fame and, apparently, his 'Empire' paycheck— with no regard for the tax-payer resources he wasted. Or the public trust he broke. 6 Back in May, Smollett soft-launched his return on instagram, writing, 'This false narrative has left a stain on my character that will not soon disappear.' FOX In a 2019 bit about the hoax, comedian Dave Chappelle repeatedly called him 'Juicy Smollye' the 'famous French actor,' while 'The Daily Show' put out a hilarious Lifetime movie-style spoof. In 2023, Fox News released a documentary where the Osundairo brothers recreated the choreographed fight at the scene of the crime, leaving no doubt that they were far more entertaining than Smollett. But America is a forgiving place. Just ask Al Sharpton, who weathered the fallout from a disgusting race and rape hoax in the 1980s — and is now treated as a respectable commentator on MSNBC. What a great country. Not that Smollett will ever admit that fact. Or the real truth about what happened that freezing night in 2019.

A$AP Rocky's Latest Look Is The Sweetest Homage To Rihanna

THE RUNDOWN: Last night, A$AP Rocky stepped out on the red carpet for the premiere of Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest in Los Angeles. The rapper, who shows off his acting chops in the upcoming film, looked dapper in a relaxed nylon suit from the ERL fall 2025 collection. He accessorized with a custom polka-dot tie from the brand, designed by Eli Russell Linnetz. The look was styled by Matthew Henson—who you can also thank for Rocky's quilted blanket ERL moment at the 2021 Met Gala. If the ensemble looks familiar, it's because last month, Rihanna wore the same suit and tie out to dinner at her favorite spot, Giorgio Baldi. (No look is too daring for the style icon to dine in; she also wore sculptural Alaïa to the same restaurant.) Unlike Rocky, Rihanna skipped the nylon button-down shirt and instead sported a see-through Savage X Fenty bra, further cementing her as the foremost trendsetter for edgy maternity style. Rocky and Rihanna might be one of the most stylish couples out there, so it makes sense that the two would dig into each other's closets, share looks, and double their sartorial impact. In an interview with Variety on the carpet at the 2025 Met Gala, the rapper joked that Rihanna was a 'thief' when it came to his closet. 'She be stealing all my pieces, my favorite pieces,' he said, adding that he was waiting to get her back. Now, that time has come, and the pair couldn't look better.

A Source Reveals Why Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau Are 'Just Casual'

THE RUNDOWN Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are keeping things informal as they continue to spend time together. A source speaking with Entertainment Tonight said the pop star and former Canadian prime minister are 'having fun together and getting to know one another.' 'Justin is charismatic and has great energy, which is exactly what Katy wants and needs at the moment,' the source shared. 'For now, things are just casual.' The insider also commented on Perry's dynamic with her ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom, from whom she split in July after six years of being engaged. The pair also shares a 4-year-old daughter, Daisy. According to the source, Bloom is 'doing his thing and dating,' but 'things still aren't great' between him and Perry. 'Their relationship is a bit awkward and strained,' the insider said. Perry and Trudeau first sparked romance rumors in late July when they were seen together on a three-stop date in Montreal. They were photographed walking in Mount Royal Park, dining at Le Violon, and then having drinks at Taverne Atlantic. Two days later, Trudeau attended Perry's concert in the city with his daughter, Ella-Grace, where fans saw him singing along to 'Firework.' Earlier this month, a source told People, 'They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes. She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.' 'Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would,' the source added. 'But there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities. For one thing, they each have an ex. So, duties are split in half. And long-distance relationships, while still hard, are possible for these two.' Neither Perry nor Trudeau has publicly commented on the nature of their relationship.
