India Steps into the Global Wrestling Arena -- The Global League Wrestling Launches 17 September 2025

NewsVoir
New Delhi [India], August 13: For years, India has cheered from the sidelines as global wrestling spectacles captured imaginations worldwide. Now, it's our turn. This September, the spotlight swings to India -- not as a spectator, but as a creator, leader, and game-changer.
AdiGroupe and its sports innovation arm AEx SPORT, in association with Prasar Bharati, proudly announce the launch of Global League Wrestling (GLW) -- the nation's first global-format professional wrestling league, conceived in India and designed for audiences across the world.
This is more than sport. It's a national moment.
Launching on 17th September 2025 with a 40-week season, GLW will air on DD Sports, stream on Waves OTT, and broadcast through All India Radio beginning 4th October. Together, these platforms are expected to deliver a staggering reach of 1 billion viewers, from the largest metros to the smallest villages -- making GLW one of the most ambitious sports entertainment projects ever launched from Indian soil.
The Energy of India, the Spirit of the World
GLW combines the athletic intensity of professional wrestling with the richness of Indian storytelling. Expect powerful rivalries, heroic journeys, and emotional sagas -- inspired by our cultural identity yet crafted to captivate audiences everywhere. Every match will be a spectacle, every character a story worth following, and every victory a reason to celebrate.
At the heart of GLW, The Great Khali takes on the role of Brand Ambassador and Talent Commissioner, guiding a new generation of Indian wrestling talent and preparing them to stand tall on the global stage.
A Gift to the Nation
"GLW is India's statement to the world -- that we have the vision, skill, and execution prowess to create world-class sports entertainment," said Sanjay Viswanathan, Chairman of AdiGroupe, AEx SPORT, and GLW. "It's a platform for our athletes to rise, compete, and inspire -- and for our stories to echo far beyond our borders. This is a gift to the Bharat, and a celebration of our youth's energy and determination."
Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO of Prasar Bharati, added, "GLW offers something truly unique -- the discipline and drama of professional wrestling brought to life with the cultural depth of India. Through our platforms, we will bring this to every home, every community, and every generation."
History in the Making
With GLW, India is not entering the global wrestling map quietly -- it is stepping into the arena with the force of a billion hearts. From screens to stadiums, from local heroes to global icons, GLW will inspire a generation, showcase homegrown excellence, and unite the nation in pride and excitement.
Mark your calendars. 17th September 2025 is the day India enters the ring -- not as a contender, but as a champion unveiled.
This is our league. Our stories. Our glory.

Aakash Chopra Explains Why MS Dhoni Will Never Be India's Head Coach

Former Indian cricketer and renowned commentator Aakash Chopra has explained why MS Dhoni is unlikely to ever take up the prestigious role of India's head coach. While Dhoni has previously mentored India during the 2021 T20 World Cup, Chopra believes the World Cup-winning captain has little interest in returning to a full-time, high-pressure cricketing environment. Why Dhoni Will Not Become India's Head Coach Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted the demanding nature of international coaching, suggesting that Dhoni's priorities at this stage of life do not align with the grueling schedule that comes with the job. 'That is a big one. I don't think he is interested. Coaching is a difficult job. Coaching keeps you as busy as you were when playing, sometimes even more. You have a family, you have lived your life out of a suitcase, and you don't want to do that job now,' Chopra said. Chopra underlined that while many former cricketers take up short coaching stints in IPL franchises, a full-time India coaching role demands nearly ten months of commitment each year. That, he believes, is something Dhoni will not sacrifice, especially considering his desire to spend more time with family after years of relentless international cricket. 'That is why a lot of players don't get into coaching. Even if they do, it's a two-month IPL stint. But being the Indian head coach is a 10-month responsibility. I'll be amazed if Dhoni has that much time,' Chopra added. Kuldeep Yadav's Absence Raises Questions In the same video, Chopra also expressed his concern about Kuldeep Yadav's lack of opportunities in Test cricket, particularly overseas. The wrist-spinner, who last played an away Test in 2019, was once hailed by then-coach Ravi Shastri as India's No. 1 overseas spinner after his six-wicket haul in Sydney. Yet, despite his proven match-winning ability, Kuldeep was overlooked in all five Tests against England in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Chopra did not hold back his disappointment: 'You have to feel for Kuldeep Yadav. He hasn't played matches in eight years. If you don't, you are not a true follower of Indian cricket. I am very surprised and slightly frustrated. He will get old before he gets the chances he deserves.' This remark reignites the debate about India's spin strategy in overseas conditions and whether team management has been too rigid with its selections. Dhoni on Chennai Super Kings' Struggles and Future Plans While Dhoni has ruled out a career in full-time coaching, his immediate focus remains on Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The five-time IPL champions endured their worst-ever season last year, finishing at the bottom of the table with just four wins from 14 matches. Dhoni, who turned 44 this July, stepped in as captain midway through the campaign after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined. Speaking at a public event in Chennai, Dhoni admitted CSK have 'holes in the squad' that must be addressed in the upcoming mini-auction. 'There were certain holes we need to plug. Our batting order is more or less sorted with Rutu coming back. A small auction is coming in December, and we will try to plug those gaps. Fans feel disappointed, but players feel even more. Last year wasn't good, but looking ahead we will try to sort things out and hopefully be at our best,' Dhoni said. Dhoni also stressed that consistency and knockout performances are key to winning trophies in the IPL. Despite leading CSK to five titles, he acknowledged that the team has been below its usual standards over the past two seasons. 'The beauty of sport is that what you do on paper doesn't matter—it's about how you perform on the field. The last couple of years haven't been up to the mark. But every new season starts from scratch, and that's how we'll approach it,' Dhoni added.

Shubman Gill set to miss Asia Cup 2025? Young India batter likely to take opening slot, says report

The Indian senior men's selection committee is likely to meet on 19 August in order to pick the squad for the Asia Cup. Ahead of the official announcement by the Ajit Agarkar-led committee, a new report by Cricbuzz has revealed that Indian Test captain Shubman Gill and pacer Mohammed Siraj may not find themselves in the squad for the upcoming T20I event. Notably, Gill scored over 750 runs in the recently concluded England Test series, making him the second-highest run-scoring Indian in a Test series behind only Sunil Gavaskar. Meanwhile, Siraj also impressed in the series as he was the highest wicket-taker and the only pacer to play all five matches. While Gill also had a great IPL 2025 season, the Cricbuzz report states that the selectors are likely to stick with the pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal is said to be a strong contender for the backup opener slot. Gill is reportedly trailing in the backup opener race unless coach Gautam Gambhir makes a strong pitch for the Test captain. Reportedly, the other batters in contention for the Asia Cup squad are Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh and skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Another batting slot is yet to be decided, with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar as contenders. However, Shreyas Iyer, who had a great season with the bat this year and led Punjab Kings to the final of the IPL, may not find a slot in the squad. Meanwhile, Jitesh Sharma could be the second wicket-keeper in the side. As for bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead the attack, with the other pacer spots likely to be filled by Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Hardik Pandya could be the sole pace-bowling all-rounder in the side. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel could be the designated spinners.
