To function as a nation-state, Pakistan need not inject hate into Islam
Pope Francis will be buried today but his footprint in history will stay forever. In fact, Pakistan's army chief Pope's message and delete, delete, delete, his Muslims-are-not-Hindus hate message. Of course, Muslims aren't Hindus, nor are they Jews, Christians, or Buddhists or, whatever. Shias aren't Sunnis either. Yet, as Pope Francis reminded us, we are 'one' across religions.
In saying this, Pope fast forwarded the Catholics into the 21st century by holding firm to Jesus's core message.

OBC quota deadlock dominates politics in West Bengal; new list an appeasement move, says BJP

The deadlock over the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation continues to dominate politics in West Bengal with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership accusing the State government of 'appeasement politics' on Wednesday, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that'backwardness'wasthe only benchmark to decide OBC categories. Addressing the State Assembly while tabling the annual report of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes for the financial year 2024-25,the Chief Minister had said on Tuesday that a commission set up by the government is holding a survey on 50 new subsections for inclusion in the category. The Calcutta High Court in May 2024 had struck down the OBC reservation awarded to 77 categories, highlighting a complete lack of legislative policy within the 2012 scheme to classify any group as OBC. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court. On March 19, 2025, the State government told the Supreme Court that it would complete the fresh OBC survey within three months. Since the fresh list of OBC reservation is not available, the admission to colleges in the State has not started almost a month after results of Higher Secondary Examinations have been declared. The State government on Tuesday also tabled in the Assembly an interim report on the new OBC list for reservations. 'One-sided benefits' Reacting to the developments, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took to social media and said, 'If this reservation list is not prepared with the intention of providing 'one-sided benefits' exclusively to Muslims, by deliberately depriving Hindus and other communities, then the sun rises in the west.' Meanwhile, State Education Minister Bratya Basu has assured that there will be no disruption in the academic calender due to the OBC reservation list.

5,500 Annapurna Bhawans to have fair price shops, common service centres

Lucknow: Around 5,500 upcoming 'Annapurna Bhawans' will be a blend of fair price shops and common service centres (CSC) provisioning essential govt and non-govt services to citizens in rural and urban centres of Uttar Pradesh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The key feature will be the hallmark of these centres which would be constructed across all districts – the state govt plans to set up at least 75 Annapurna Bhawans in each district. The development comes a week after the cabinet gave its nod to step up the construction of Annapurna Bhawan by utilizing funds and sources other than Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). These centres may now be set up using MP/MLA Local Area Development Fund, tourism development fund, Bundelkhand Vikas Nidhi or any other govt-approved scheme. The feature comes as an add-on after the successful implementation of PM Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana, Centre's flagship scheme that was put in place at the peak of coronavirus pandemic. The state govt has already set up around 3,500 Annapurna Bhawans. "Another 2,000 are in the pipeline," food and civil supplies minister Satish Sharma told TOI. Currently, there are around 80,000 fair price shops in the state. Sharma said that selected shops would be shifted to Annapurna Bhawan free of cost. "The objective of the scheme is to improve the accessibility of fair price shops and ensure their transparent operation," he said. In a communique to all divisional commissioners, principal secretary, food and civil supplies, Ranveer Prasad said that each Annapurna Bhawan would be constructed over an area of around 484 sq feet. The shop will comprise two sections – one for the fair price shop, the other for CSC. These centres will also have a 96 sq ft verandah, which would serve as a waiting area. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These centres may also be constructed in clusters in the urban areas after due approval from the district magistrates. The district administration will choose the working agency – gram panchayat in rural and development authority in urban areas.

Congress expels Digvijaya's brother Lakshman for 6 yrs

Bhopal: In a major blow to former chief minister Digvijaya Singh , the Congress party on Wednesday expelled his brother and former MLA Lakshman Singh for six years from primary membership of the party. A release from AICC disciplinary committee member Tariq Anwar on Wednesday afternoon, said, "Hon'ble Congress President has expelled Lakshman Singh from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress for a period of six years, with immediate effect, due to his anti-party activities. After the Pulwama terror attack on tourists, former MP from Rajgarh seat, Lakshaman Singh gave statements in public against Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi , Robert Vadra — husband of MP from Wayanad AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi — and Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah which was perceived as indiscipline and anti-party activity. Speaking to reporters, former state Congress president Arun Yadav said, "I don't agree to speaking against the party in public." State BJP president VD Sharma said, "This is the decision of the Congress party. I don't need to say anything on it. But many times, Lakshman Singh showed Congress the mirror. And this is what happens to people who show the mirror of truth to the Congress party." On April 24, at a function organised to pay homage to the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Lakshman Singh said, "Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra are immature. The country is suffering the consequences of their immaturity." He also said, "Robert Vadra is Rahulji's brother-in-law. He said that the (Pahalgam) attack is because Muslims are not permitted to offer Namaz on the roads. Till when are we going to tolerate such childishness? Rahul Gandhi should think before he speaks, he is the LOP." Lakshman Singh further alleged that Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah was in collusion with terrorists and Congress should withdraw its support from the alliance with the National Conference govt. "I am saying this on camera that the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir is in collusion with terrorists. I urge Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to withdraw support from him," Lakshman Singh said. The former MLA from Chachoura assembly seat had even said, "If the party wants to remove me, they may do so today." After one-and-half months, the party finally acted on the recommendation sent by the AICC Disciplinary Committee to expel him from primary membership of the party. On May 9, the DAC member secretary Tariq Anwar issued the show-cause notice to Lakshman Singh with a directive to respond within 10 days.
