No plans to lengthen runway at Mount Pleasant Regional Airport, mayor says

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — Mayor Will Haynie pushed back on rumors Friday regarding the future of the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport.
According to Haynie, rumors falsely claiming that there were plans to extend the airport's runway recently began re-circulating on social media.
'Despite the fervor on the infamous NextDoor platform, there are NO PLANS nor have there EVER been any plans to lengthen the runway at Mount Pleasant Regional Airport,' Haynie wrote in a Feb. 21 Instagram post. 'Not now, not ever.'
Haynie serves as a board member for the Charleston County Aviation Authority, which owns and operates the Charleston area's three airports. He said the idea had not been considered during his seven years on the authority's board.

His post also included a statement from Executive Director Elliott Summey, which reads in part: 'There are absolutely zero plans to extend the runway at LRO…we don't have enough real estate over there to do any more expansion beyond what we already have.'
The airport, located on a roughly 300-acre plot of land in northern Mount Pleasant, opened to the public in the summer of 1986. It has one paved runway measuring about 3,700 feet long and 75 feet wide.
Haynie said similar rumors spread during past election cycles, and he accused some council candidates of attempting to use it as a 'political wedge' issue again.
'Any council candidates who continue to spread false information about this are fear mongers who are just desperate for attention,' he wrote.
News 2 has reached out to Mayor Haynie for further clarification.

UK households could face 10pm curfew under possible law change from Labour

The government is considering implementing new online safety measures that would limit the time children spend on social media, according to the BBC. Essentially, during the curfew hours, children would no longer be able to access social media websites or apps such as TikTik, Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook. The details of how these rules would work or how they would be reinforced remain to be seen, but in an interview on BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said he was looking at the "addictive nature of some of the apps and smartphones". Read more: Cash ISA savers warned accounts' future remains 'in a state of flux' after Spending Review Online safety and safeguarding expert, Marry-Ann Round from certified training specialists Virtual College by Netex has shared her opinion on the proposed meansures, included whether or not they will even work. She explained: 'While there are existing measures available on social media apps to set screen time limits, research shows that the take-up of these features is low. 'Should the new safety rules roll out, social media companies will need to think about how the rules can be enforced, without relying on parental guidance, to truly support the limitation of screen time. 'While it has not been made clear how or when these new guidelines will roll out, the Government should continue to strengthen the Online Safety Act to help support the safety of children online." If these rules were to come into force, they would naturally impact child of different ages differently, Mary-Ann has also provided guidance on how to approach a conversation surrounding online safety with them. She said: 'Once you've spotted a change in behaviour, knowing how to discuss this with your child is key. 'Always consider their age first as a conversation with a 6-year-old should look very different from one with a teenager. 'The key is meeting children at their level — with empathy, age-appropriate language and a non-judgemental tone, to ensure children feel safe coming to you. How to talk to younger children (ages 5–8): 'At this age, it's about teaching them the basics, such as not talking to strangers online, and telling a trusted adult if anything feels upsetting or strange. 'Use simple comparisons they understand to help them understand their online use and why it's important to stay safe. 'Reassurance and building trust at this age is key as this will encourage them to talk to you and open up as they get older, without the fear of being in trouble. Preteens (ages 9–12): 'Preteens start to socialise online and may be exposed to peer pressure or online bullying sometimes referred to as cyberbullying, making this age a critical time to start talking about handling uncomfortable situations. 'Try to make it a two-way conversation, ask what they're seeing online, who they talk to and which games they play. 'Check in regularly to stay close to it, checking in on group chats and the tone of online conversations. Teenagers (ages 13-16): 'With teenagers, it's about trust and respect. At this age, they want independence and therefore may be reluctant to talk or open up at first. 'Frame the conversation as an open discussion, rather than blaming or putting restrictions on their online activity, as this could cause the situation to escalate and they might become closed off. 'It's less about control and more about empowering them to make informed decisions.'

Seattle mayor urges peaceful protests, warns against fueling Trump narrative

The Brief Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is urging peaceful protests in Seattle, saying violence is what Trump wants to "spin his false narrative" about the city. An anti-ICE rally is set to take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cal Anderson Park. A national "NO KINGS" demonstration is planned for Saturday, President Trump's birthday. SEATTLE - Mayor Bruce Harrell is urging Seattle protesters to remain peaceful, warning that violence and property damage would reinforce a narrative President Donald Trump could use to misrepresent the city. As the nation witnesses violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement in Los Angeles, people in other cities, like Seattle, are holding similar rallies in solidarity. This week alone, Seattle has already seen anti-ICE demonstrations at the Federal Building and pro-Palestine rallies at the U-District light rail station urging the University of Washington to cut ties with Boeing due to the company's military contracts with Israel. More protests are expected in the coming days. "The Trump administration's actions in Los Angeles are an extreme and egregious overreach of federal authority meant to escalate tensions and distract from his failures to live up to the promises he hasn't delivered on," the Mayor wrote in part. "We disagree with Trump's ICE policy of mass deportations that has already been on full display in American communities with arrests, detentions, and deportations often occurring in violation of due process." An anti-ICE rally is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Seattle's Cal Anderson Park, calling on the federal government to stop the deportations conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). What they're saying "The people of Los Angeles and surrounding areas have taken a courageous stand against Trump's reign of terror targeting immigrant families," wrote Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL) wrote in an Instagram post. "In response, the administration has falsely labeled those taking to the streets in protest of the brutal war on immigrants as "rioters" and called in thousands of National Guard soldiers for a crackdown." The PSL called on protesters not to "let this repression intimidate" the community and encouraged Antifa to "invade Seattle" on Wednesday. Amid recent violence in Los Angeles, Harrell reiterated that violent actions would only serve to justify Trump's policies. "Seattle strongly supports the First Amendment rights of our residents, and we encourage residents to stand up for their values peacefully," Mayor Harrell wrote. "There is no room for violence. Violence and property damage are exactly what Trump wants to spin his false narrative of our city." Major anti-Trump demonstrations are scheduled across the U.S. on Saturday, June 14, including several in Washington state. The "NO KINGS" campaign is promoting a national day of action to protest what it calls the "increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption" of the Trump administration. The event coincides with President Trump's birthday and is intended to counter a planned military parade in Washington, D.C. What they're saying "In America, we don't put up with would-be kings. NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies," read a statement from NO KINGS organizers. "We've watched as they've cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. They've done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies." In addition to the protest at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle, demonstrations are planned in: Everett Tacoma Olympia Vancouver Spokane Other cities across the state The Source Information in this story comes from an official statement from Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, SUPER UW, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, "NO KINGS" demonstration organizers and original reporting by FOX 13 Seattle.
