July car sales hit six-year peak

July car sales hit six-year peak

The Heralda day ago
Despite the looming threat of tariffs, South Africa's domestic new-vehicle market continued full throttle in July, delivering the highest monthly sales since October 2019.
In the tenth straight month of increased volumes, 51,383 units were delivered last month, up 15.6% from July 2024, which industry body Naamsa attributed to improving consumer confidence, favourable credit conditions and a steady recovery in disposable incomes. It firmly re-established pre-Covid-19 levels and momentum in the market's recovery.
Passenger cars were the best performing segment last month at 36,248 units, the highest since January 2017 and a gain of 20.1% compared to July 2024. Car rental sales accounted for 14% of last month's figure.
Sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and minibuses at 12,356 units were 6.9% higher than July 2024.
Medium trucks sold 703 units (+13.9%) while heavy trucks and buses dropped 1.3% to 2,076 units.
The much-welcomed decision by the Reserve Bank in July to further reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7% — its third cut this year — will further inject much-needed stimulus into the economy, said Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa.
'Encouragingly, household credit extension has continued to improve, while consumer sentiment is rebounding — especially among middle- and upper-income groups. The implementation of pension reforms has also unlocked additional liquidity for big-ticket purchases such as vehicles. This positive trend is further reinforced by improved logistics performance, a more stable electricity supply and a sustained demand for high-spec, cost-effective vehicles across market segments,' he said.
Year-to-date sales of 330,274 new vehicles this year were 13.9% up on the first seven months of 2024.
'There remains a direct correlation between the rate-cutting cycle and the upturn in new vehicle sales,' said Lebo Gaoaketse, head of marketing and communication at WesBank. 'The market should continue to expect growth if interest rates remain lower.'
'The cumulative interest rate cut of 1.25% since the cycle started is saving a typical new car buyer about R257 per month. The sweet spot of the new vehicle market is a price point of R370,000 according to WesBank's book. More critically, the interest saving over the loan period could be over R18,500, which shows the impact lower rates have on stimulating the market and aiding affordability.'
Vehicle exports have shown resilience in the face of the 25% automotive tariffs imposed by the US in April. Export volumes last month decreased 1.9% to 35,379 units compared to July 2024, but year-to-date exports were still 2.5% ahead of the same period in 2024. However, the 30% tariffs imposed on South Africa from this month are expected to cause economic headwinds for some local motor manufacturers.
'Despite global uncertainty and the looming threat of tariffs, South Africa's vehicle market continues to show remarkable resilience,' said Brandon Cohen, chair of the National Automobile Dealers' Association (NADA).
A key contributor to the robust passenger market is the growing influence of Chinese and Asian vehicle brands, he said. Four Chinese importers are now among the top 15 best-sellers, including newer entrants such as Omoda/Jaecoo and Jetour.
'Financial institutions have also shown confidence in these brands by offering white-labelled finance packages, further supporting their market penetration. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Kia and Mahindra continue to feature prominently in the top 10, reflecting strong demand for affordable, value-driven options, a trend that has also underpinned Suzuki's consistent success.
'The rapid rise of Chinese and Asian brands reflects a shift in buyer preferences towards affordability and value. It's a trend we expect to intensify as more brands enter the market,' said Cohen.
Toyota retained its lead as South Africa's most popular brand in July. The top 15 selling brands were:
1. Toyota — 12,694
2. Suzuki — 6,257
3. Volkswagen group — 5,738
4. Hyundai — 3,161
5. Ford — 2,877
6. GWM — 2,436
7. Isuzu — 2,427
8. Chery — 2,160
9. Kia — 1,891
10. Mahindra — 1,441
11. Renault — 1,320
12. BMW group — 1,249
13. Nissan — 1,190
14. Omoda and Jaecoo- 1,069
15. Jetour — 717

BMA introduces traceable stamps to tighten border security

The Border Management Authority (BMA) is rolling out a series of security upgrades as part of its ongoing strategy to modernise South Africa's border management system. Speaking at a press conference on the first quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato highlighted key developments, including the introduction of secure, traceable immigration stamps, drone-based surveillance and new training initiatives in counterfeit detection. He said the BMA introduced new security stamps on Friday, replacing the old, vulnerable stamps that had been used by immigration specialists. This followed widespread misuse of the stamps, with individuals illegally stamping people's passports with fraudulently reproduced stamps in the past few months. Masiapato said the initiative formed part of the BMA's broader commitment to strengthening national security and represented a deliberate step towards enhancing the integrity of border control processes. The authority had collaborated with the Government Printing Works and designed the new stamps with the highest security standards, including the BMA logo to prevent tampering, forgery and unauthorised use. 'Each of the immigration officers has been allocated a specific stamp with its unique number linked to each officer to trace back should their allocated stamp be found to facilitate illegal migration into the country,' he said. The BMA was now embarking on redesigning new stamps for other specialised functions such as agriculture, health and environment. Masiapato also announced that six border guards had qualified as drone pilots in July . This is as the authority tries to strengthen border security efforts by leveraging technology-driven solutions such as the usage of drones for border surveillance. To increase drone operation capacity, he said they plan to send more border guards for pilot training. 'The skills they have acquired will strengthen border security efforts through enhanced surveillance and increased visibility, particularly in the identified vulnerable segments of the borderline. Further, we have also partnered with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and trained the border guards in counterfeit detection and currency handling, giving them the necessary skills to identify counterfeit banknotes and coins in circulation.' Between April 1 and June 30, the BMA intercepted and deported 9,954 individuals who had attempted to enter South Africa illegally. Of these, 5,826 were found to be undocumented, 2,127 were deemed inadmissible and 2,001 were classified as undesirables. The majority of those intercepted and deported individuals were Basotho, Zimbabweans and Mozambicans. 'In this quarter, our border law enforcement team also intercepted and handed over to SAPS a total of 15 high-powered suspected stolen vehicles for further handling. Incrementally, since July 2022, the border guards have intercepted more than 349 vehicles which were meant to be smuggled out of the country by criminal syndicates,' Masiapato said. During the quarter under review, port immigration specialists processed 8,582,250 passengers entering and leaving the country. Port health specialists processed 986 permits for the movement of mortal remains during the three-month period, of which 44 were imported into the country while 942 were exported out of the country. About 13 children were intercepted across the various ports, of which five were unaccompanied and handed over to officials of the department of social development for further processing. 'The remaining eight who were with their parents were refused entry as they did not meet the entry requirements into the country. We would like to re-emphasise the requirements for the cross-border movement of children. A child who is under alternative care must produce a certified copy of an authorisation letter from the provincial head of the department of social development before departure,' he said. TimesLIVE

Omoda fixes initial shortcomings of the C5 X Series

When Omoda entered the South African market in 2023 with the C5, it turned heads with its striking looks and how many features were present in a car selling for under R500 000. However, one thing many of us were skeptical about was Omoda's decision to pair a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine to a CVT gearbox. While it didn't make it a bad car, the CVT in the crossover contributed lazy initial throttle response and jerkyness. But Omoda recently released the C5 X Series, which is not a special edition of the original C5, just a refreshed version of the model with light aesthetic changes and improvements to the gearbox and suspension. The marque has ditched the CVT for a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) gearbox in the C5 X Series but it must be noted that the CVT is still present in the C5 Style and Street variants which are available at a lower price. The DCT allows for rapid gear shifts, which enhances performance and gets rid of that lazy initial throttle response as the vehicle is always primed to shift into the next gear. This improvement also allows easier overtakes on the highway and makes the vehicle a pleasure to drive. The improved suspension also contributes to the silky-smooth drive that the C5 X Series provides. Omoda has moved from the beam axle suspension to a rear multi-link suspension. The beam axle suspension is where a single beam connects the wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle. This design is commonly found in heavier vehicles and is a dependent suspension, meaning that the movement of one wheel directly affects the other, while the multi-link suspension is an independent suspension that uses multiple control arms to connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's chassis. This means that the C5 X Series has more precision when it comes to handling, ride comfort and stability. I enjoyed driving the C5 X Series more than the initial Chinese vehicles, which all used the CVT gearboxes, although the figures around power and torque remained the same. It was easier to access the vehicle's power without feeling as if I was dragging the engine. In terms of fuel consumption, Omoda claims 6.9 litres/100km. I managed 8.1 litres/100km, which is far above that figure, but it went down to around 7.5 litres/100km on the open road. On the outside, Omoda has not done too much. It has redesigned the front fascia to give the vehicle a sportier look. The diamond matrix grille is more polished and the headlights have been restyled, while the daytime running lamps have been sculpted for a more dynamic look. The brand has tried to bring the looks of the C5 more in line with the flagship C9. I feel this is good for the C5, and Omoda, because it speaks to building brand identity as it continues to expand in South Africa. On the inside, the cabin is tech heavy, clean, modern and comfortable. The dual 10.25-inch screens across the front feed into the stylish interior and integrate into the cabin effortlessly. You also have a sunroof and some very nice ambient lighting in the cabin. Verdict and pricing Omoda has listened to feedback on the original C5 and produced a much more refined and better driving experience in the C5 X Series. After passing 1 000 vehicle sales for the month of June, it's easy to predict that the C5 X Series will be the one of the brand's biggest sellers going forward, especially because the brand has kept the price so competitive. The C5 X Series is available in two variants: the C5 Lux X and the Elegance X. The former is priced at R425 900 and the latter at R465 900. The C5 X Series comes with a five-year/150 000km warranty, five-year/70 000km service plan and a 10-year/1 million kilometre engine warranty as part of the standard price.
