From Toronto traffic to Croke Park: Donegal fan scores final ticket thanks to cop's banter

Extra.iea day ago
A spot of banter on the streets of Toronto has turned into a precious All-Ireland Final ticket for one lucky Donegal woman.
Clare O'Brien will be at today's game with her new friend Conor Holly – a Canadian policeman with Irish parents – thanks to a series of fortunate events that began unfolding on the day of Donegal's semi-final victory over Meath two weeks ago.
Ms O'Brien was sitting in traffic in Toronto, where she has lived for around three-and-a-half years, along with her visiting mother and stepfather.
She told Extra.ie: 'We'd been away for the weekend and were coming back through the city.
'I still had my Donegal jersey on and the window down, and a cop cycled past and shouted 'Up Kerry!' at me, in through the window. @connie.mc.granaghan #donegalgaa #donegal #toronto #canadalife #torontolifestyle ♬ original sound – connie.mc.granaghan☘️
'My mum is going through a little bit of a TikTok phase, so she happened to be recording at that time, caught it on camera, and was like, 'Oh my God, this is hilarious. I have to post it.'' The clip went 'a bit viral', attracting 'about 200,000 views'.
The video eventually got back to the cheeky policeman, Mr Holly, who then got in touch with Ms O'Brien's mother Connie directly.
Born and raised in Toronto, Mr Holly's father is from Kerry and his mother is from Belfast.
'He asked us if we wanted a tour of the police station that he works in,' Ms O'Brien said. 'So Mum, of course, said yes, and added, 'Clare will wear her Donegal jersey and you can wear your Kerry jersey.' They took us around the whole station. It was lovely.' Pic: Supplied
The new friends kept in touch through social media and planned to watch today's decider together in a Toronto bar. But Mr Holly got in contact on Wednesday to say that his father had secured a few tickets for the match, if she'd like to have one.
Ms O'Brien said: 'I was actually at work drinks, and I was like, 'I might need this evening to think about that,' – last-minute flights back are obviously really expensive.
'But I let my family know, and they were like, 'Oh my God, you have to come. This is such an opportunity.'' Ms O'Brien, who is programme manager for a digital mental health company, accepted the ticket the next day and flew overnight last night, due to land at 11.30am today.
Mr Holly flew into Ireland on Friday. 'His dad is coming too,' Ms O'Brien said. 'He said it's been his dad's dream to see Kerry in Croke Park.'

'I'm meeting my uncle in Drumcondra to leave my suitcase and stuff, and that's actually where an uncle of [Mr Holly's] lives, so he'll be in that area as well,' Ms O'Brien said.
'We will definitely meet up beforehand, and probably afterwards. It depends on how the match goes.'
She described the kind-hearted policeman as 'a really nice guy' who was 'very easy to chat to'.
'He has that kind of Irish, chatty way about him, even though he's Canadian.'
While the serendipitous meeting and ensuing friendship could be the set-up for a rom-com, Ms O'Brien laughed that her girlfriend 'might not be too impressed with that'.
She plans to stay in Ireland for a week, and will be heading straight home to Letterkenny after today's game.

How to dismantle the zone defence: reflections on Kerry's Croke Park clinic

THE architecture for Sunday's devastating All-Ireland final performance was a collaboration of minds and ideas in Camp Kerry. Both selector James Costello and coach Cian O'Neill have mentioned Jack O'Connor the delegator in terms of sharing the load and the lead on strategy. 'He's old school with a twist,' is how selector Aodán MacGearailt described it. It helps when you have a freak like David Clifford as your offensive plus-one, but what of Donegal's zone plus-one defence, and the questions its 'malfunction' left hanging in the ether on Monday? Most of the pre-final analysis indicated that, tactically, Donegal and McGuinness had Kerry down cold. In its wake, we are all a bit nonplussed. This is exclusive subscriber content. Roisin Black hails teammate Ailish O'Reilly as ‘one of Galway's most consistent players ever' after Tipp win

O'Reilly is in pursuit of a fourth All-Ireland medal, having scored a goal in the 2013 decider, two in 2019 and slotted a couple of points in 2021. The four-time All-Star from Oranmore/Maree got four points at the weekend. Praise for her own role as part of that stifling defence was deflected. Black countered: 'It comes from Sarah Healy in goals, all the way out. Our job is to deliver good ball to the forwards and they do a great job of keeping it up there.' Indeed, the keeper showed the benefit of all her experience with some solid work between the posts after a mis-control of a poor shot from Karen Kennedy resulted in a Premier goal in the 26th minute. "But we've a lot of hard work done and we've girls coming off the bench there and they finished it off strong for us in the second half.' Manager Cathal Murray loved what he saw from his players after that sticky patch. After leading his side to a fifth All-Ireland decider having won two of the previous four, he added: 'We showed huge resilience. "To put in a performance like that with players who weren't on the team last year but have really, really stepped up to the plate, that is massive for the group. Serie A side confirms signing of Irish defender as Kilmarnock fans react

Corrie Ndaba has completed his move to Serie A side Lecce on a three-year deal, with the option of two more, the Italian club confirmed on Monday. Ndaba's move from Kilmarnock was finalised after the Dubliner flew into Italy at the weekend to undergo a medical. The 25-year-old only joined Kilmarnock last summer from Ipswich Town on a three-year contract, having spent the previous season on-loan at Rugby Park. A former Cherry Orchard prospect, he played twice for the Tractor Boys in the League Cup, while he also gained first-team experience on loan at Hemel Hempstead Town, Chelmsford City, Ayr United, Salford City, Burton Albion and Fleetwood Town. His form at Kilmarnock, where he played 66 games across his two seasons there, brought him to the attention of the Italian side. And they confirmed on social media on Monday: 'U.S. Lecce announces that it has acquired, on a permanent basis, the rights to the sporting services of the footballer Corrie Ndaba from Kilmarnock FC. 'The Irish defensive winger, born in 1999, has signed a three-year contract with an option for an additional two years.' The club last weekend posted a picture of Ndaba with a club scarf, along with confirmation of his arrival for a medical. Ndaba reacted to the move, posting on social media: 'New chapter, delighted to sign for this club, Forza Lecce.' Fans of Kilmarnock reacted to the move by wishing the Irishman all the best. One posted: 'Look after him! Cracking player. Good luck Corrie and thanks for everything.' Another wrote: 'Best of Luck Corrie, Lecce have got themselves a top player' Other posters also wished the former Ireland underage international well, underlining his popularity among fans of his former club. 'Good luck corrie go smash it' 'Good luck, Corrie. You were an integral part of the team last season.' 'Hope to see you back at Killie some day' 'Best of luck Corrie, hope it all goes well for you! ktid' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .
