Starlink has cleared its final regulatory hurdle for launching
commercial broadband
in India.
Starlink
has now received the important approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe). After this final approval, Starlink becomes the third satcom operator after Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and the Reliance Jio-SES joint venture, to receive all the necessary clearances for operating in the Indian market.
Starlink's Starlink's Gen 1 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, which comprises 4,408 satellites capable of delivering 600 Gbps throughput across India. Last month, Starlink obtained its Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) permit.
Starlink's India approval comes with an expiry date
The satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, has cleared all the regulatory hurdles, but till the company will have to wait for the full-scale commercial launch of its service. Like the other competitors, Starlink will also have to mandatorily procure trial spectrum and meet security compliances set by the
Department of Telecommunications
(DoT) before being allowed to start its services commercially.
Eutelsat OneWeb and the Jio-SES JV received their trial spectrums last year and they also received an extension of six months. Now both the operators are waiting for their final security compliance approval. DoT is also expected to issue trial spectrum to Starlink.

On the basis of TRAI's recommendations, DoT is also expected to soon finalize pricing and allocation rules for satellite spectrum. TRAI has proposed an administrative allocation model with a 4% fee on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) for five years. Urban users may face an additional ₹500 per subscriber annually, while rural users are exempt.
Starlink in India may face hurdles
However, a widespread adoption for Starlink in India may face hurdles, particularly concerning hardware costs. Globally, Starlink's hardware kits range from $250 (approx. Rs 21,300) to $380 (approx. Rs 32,400). This represents a significant upfront investment compared to existing Indian home broadband offerings, which typically feature much lower hardware costs, provide speeds up to 1 Gbps, and often bundle Over-The-Top (OTT) app subscriptions.

Your salary won't make you rich. CA shares a simple formula that can help you build wealth

Is your salary making you rich? (Istock- Image used for representative purpose only) In a world where everyone's chasing bigger paychecks, CA Nitin Kaushik is urging people to pause and ask the uncomfortable question—is your salary really making you wealthy? Spoiler: In most cases, the answer is no. And according to him, there's a simple reason why. In a viral post on X, Kaushik drops what he calls a truth bomb about how the Indian economy works—and why many salaried people are stuck in a cycle of earning without actually building wealth. He points out that while India has over 140 crore people, only about 7–8% actually pay income tax. At the same time, the top 1% of Indians own close to 40% of the country's wealth, while the bottom 50% make do with just 15%. The gap isn't just wide—it's growing. But Kaushik doesn't just highlight the problem; he offers a shift in mindset. Most people follow a money formula that sounds logical but doesn't work in the long run: Income – Expenses = Savings. We spend first and save whatever's left. The wealthy, however, flip that around. Their formula? Income – Savings = Expenses. In simple words, they pay themselves first. They make saving and investing non-negotiable, and then figure out how to live within the remaining budget. CA Nitin Kaushik's message is simple but powerful: your salary alone won't make you rich unless you learn how to use it right. Wealth isn't just about how much you earn—it's about what you do with it. He concluded by saying, "Your money is your responsibility. Period." Trump's 25% tariffs: Government starts talks, industry seeks sops to offset hit

NEW DELHI: Within hours of President Trump announcing a 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US, the commerce department sought to comfort exporters while also nudging them to explore other markets. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Exporters responded with suggestions that govt offer them assistance to overcome the adverse impact of US actions. During consultations led by Rajesh Agarwal, special secretary in the commerce department, exporters suggested govt immediately come up with measures that would also boost sentiment. "There is low-hanging fruit govt can address immediately," said a source in an export promotion council. A senior govt official told TOI the commerce department was also seeking to speed up reforms for special economic zones, which would help exporters as well as boost capacity utilisation by making it easier to sell in the domestic tariff area (Indian territory outside SEZs). One of the recommendations from exporters was to immediately start the export promotion mission, announced in the Budget but yet to become operational. In fact, during a meeting with commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal, some of the elements, including marketing support and assistance to deal with trade actions, were also discussed. Although the outlay is a little over Rs 4,000 crore for the current financial year, the department is hopeful of the allocation being increased. While only a handful of industry bodies have sent their inputs so far, interest subsidies are something several executives said were required to help exporters tide over the crisis as it would hurt orders in the short term and might create some cash flow issues as well. "There is also a need to process duty drawback claims and GST refunds for exporters faster to ensure adequate liquidity," said another executive with an export promotion body. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While exporters had queries on the "penalty" proposed by Trump, govt officials said they were awaiting clarity on the issue. Businesses have suggested an early bilateral trade agreement with the US will reduce disruption in the market, and are hoping for positive news during the next round of talks from Aug 25.

Trump tariff: 'Muted' impact on growth, may 'hit exports'

NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump's move to impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports from August 1 and an unspecified "penalty" for buying Russian oil and defence equipment is unlikely to have a major impact on India's overall economic growth but short-term sentiment may be dented. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Growth is expected to be in 6.2%-6.5% range in the current fiscal despite some short term pain for exports and uncertainty for a few key sectors. Estimates by brokerages show the impact on GDP growth could be in the 30-50 basis points range. The optimism on growth is based on a raft of factors, the key being the fact that the Indian economy is largely led by domestic demand which is expected to remain intact. Several key indicators are showing signs of robust expansion against the backdrop of global uncertainty and a recent finance ministry report for June said with inflation remaining within the target range and monsoon progress on track, "the domestic economy enters the second quarter of FY26 on a relatively firm footing", as domestic supply and demand fundamentals remain resilient. "While the US is India's largest trade partner, the Indian economy is relatively more domestically oriented than most of the region and relies far less on trade," said Aditi Raman, associate economist at Moody's Analytics. "Pharmaceuticals, gems, and textiles are key sectors that are likely to be hit. A point of contention is market access to the key agricultural and dairy sector, which India has historically been reluctant to grant," said Raman. India still remains the fastest growing major economy and the IMF in its latest forecast has raised its GDP growth projection for FY26 to 6.4% from the earlier 6.2%. It also lifted the projections for global growth, citing easing global trade tensions. Some experts see a muted impact of the latest threat from the US President on the country's growth. "At 25%, tariffs on India are higher than emerging market Asian peers, but we expect final tariffs to settle lower as trade deal talks progress. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We estimate 30 basis points (bps) of GDP growth impact should this threat materialise," Barclays said in a note. Some economists said the extent of the impact on growth would also depend on the size of the penalty if it is imposed as talks are still ongoing. "The tariff (and penalty) now proposed by the US is higher than what we had anticipated, and is therefore likely to pose a headwind to India's GDP growth. The extent of the downside will depend on the size of the penalties imposed," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ratings agency ICRA.
