Suspected arsonist appears in court over Melbourne synagogue fire that shocked the nation
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A suspected arsonist accused of destroying a Melbourne synagogue appeared in court seven months after the crime shocked the nation and triggered a large-scale investigation.
Giovanni Laulu, 21, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court Thursday after his arrest at a Melbourne home on Wednesday.
Police allege Laulu is one of three masked men who spread a liquid accelerant around the interior of the Adass Israel Synagogue then set it alight before dawn on Dec. 6. A worshipper preparing for morning prayers suffered minor burns.
Laulu is the first suspect to be caught, but police have foreshadowed more arrests. Police suspect there are also accomplices who planned the attack from overseas.
Laulu was charged with arson, reckless conduct endangering life and car theft.
Laulu confirmed his name but otherwise remained silent during the brief court appearance. He did not enter pleas or apply to be released on bail.
His lawyer told Magistrate Brett Sonnett this was not Laulu's first time in prison. Laulu was then remanded in custody and will appear in court next on Aug. 6.
Prosecutors sought 12 weeks to gather evidence against Laulu and said 11 cell phones need to be analysed. Sonnett gave the prosecution until Oct. 22 to present their case to Laulu's lawyers.
Federal and state police, plus Australia's main domestic spy agency, have been investigating the crime, which is suspected to be politically motivated. Police say more than 220 law enforcement officers have devoted more than 50,000 hours to the investigation.
State Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said Victoria Police would be relentless in pursuing and holding those involved in the synagogue arson to account.
'Victoria Police has seen first-hand the impact this incident has had in the Victorian community — the fear and distress a crime like this can cause,' Bush said in a statement.
'People deserve to be safe and feel safe, particularly when it comes to their places of worship. This is not negotiable in any way. We remain committed to identifying all those who seek to cause this kind of fear and harm, and ensuring they are brought to justice,' he added.
A wave of antisemitic attacks has roiled Australia since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel triggered the war in Gaza. The synagogue attack is the only incident that has been classified as an act of terrorism, a designation that increases the resources available to the investigation.
The federal government has committed 30 million Australian dollars ($20 million) to rebuild the synagogue.

A 36-year-old mother of four from Sacramento County and her 8-month-old daughter vanished more than two weeks ago after a doctor's appointment in Fresno, leaving family members desperate and law enforcement without any leads. Whisper Owen, 36, and her daughter, Sandra McCarty, were last seen on July 15, according to a news release from the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. The pair left Elk Grove, where Owen and her partner live with their three other children, at around 4 a.m. that day to make the approximately 160-mile drive to Fresno. Owen's mother, Vickie Torres, told the Los Angeles Times that the 36-year-old stopped at her house before the appointment to change Sandra's diaper and then checked in with the doctor's office at 8:30 a.m. After the 8-month-old's doctor visit, Owen and her daughter visited her brother's Fresno home until about 2:45 p.m. that afternoon before once again stopping at her mother's and, eventually, leaving Fresno around 5 p.m. At around 8 p.m., a license plate reader in Atwater, approximately 65 miles from Fresno, spotted Owen's silver 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, where Torres believes she likely stopped to use the restroom and, maybe, get baby formula for Sandra, The Times reported. Surveillance footage from a nearby smoke shop in Atwater showed Owen changing Sandra's diaper in the parking lot about a half hour before, authorities said. No one has seen or heard from the pair since. Owen's mother said it's not uncommon for her to stay in Fresno for days at a time, so when she didn't hear from her daughter's partner the night that she never made it home, it didn't occur to her to be worried. It wasn't until three days later that Owen's partner, who has not been identified, called Torres to ask about Owen. 'So then everything started to get scary at that point,' Torres told The Times. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office said that, so far, no information has been found to explain the pair's disappearance, and as of this week, the Fresno Police Department's Missing Persons Unit said there were no new developments in the case. In a statement to The Times, the police department said investigators haven't found anything that would suggest foul play was involved. With aP A New Zealand woman has been charged with child neglect after a bus driver found a two-year-old girl alive in a suitcase that was stowed in the vehicle's luggage compartment, police say. The bus driver noticed movement inside the bag during a planned stop at the settlement of Kaiwaka, north of Auckland, after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment, Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said in a statement. ‘Scream' mask vandal's graffiti spree
A vandal who repeatedly graffitied a Melbourne synagogue wearing a Scream-style mask is now the subject of a plea from police, who are desperate to uncover their identity. CCTV footage released by police on Monday shows the unknown man arriving at the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, South Yarra on a black e-scooter five times between March and July. Police say the venue was targeted with graffiti that read 'Free Palestine' and 'Iran is da bomb' on Tuesday March 11 about 1.45am, Saturday June 21 about 9.50pm, Sunday June 22 about 4.02am, Tuesday July 22 about 11.30pm and Wednesday July 30 about 8.35pm. The Herald Sun reported in the most recent attack, the synagogue was tagged with the phrase 'war crimes' with the Star of David standing in place of the letter a. Police said the man is likely caucasian, of medium build and bald, and while his clothing differs in each incident his usual attire includes a long black jacket and a 'black and white face covering'. During the July incidents the man concealed his identity with a mask from the popular horror movie Scream. Police said 'there is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behaviour'.
