Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's residence to get an "anti-climb" fence after alleged arson

CBS News07-05-2025
A barrier described as an "anti-climb fence" is in the works for the Pennsylvania governor's official residence, the state police chief said Tuesday, less than a month after a late-night intruder jumped the existing fence, broke into the home and started a damaging fire.
Col. Christopher Paris' letter to state lawmakers mentioned the fence as part of a series of changes to bolster security at the brick mansion that is the Harrisburg home of Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family.
The alleged intruder, an unemployed welder, faces charges that include attempted homicide and arson for the fire at about 2 a.m. on April 13. Shapiro and family members were awakened and evacuated, hours after participating in a Passover Seder in the residence. No one was hurt but the building's damage has been estimated to total millions of dollars.
Paris told lawmakers he does not intend to provide them with a security review conducted by consultant Jeffrey B. Miller, who led the state police about two decades ago.
Miller's findings and his agency's own investigation, Paris told the legislators, have changed procedures, including "more frequent security assessments," the establishment of a uniformed division to oversee building security at the residence and the installation of a no-climb fence.
Fences of metal and brick about 7-feet (2-meter) high already circle the residence along the Susquehanna River about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the Capitol. Construction on the new fence did not appear to have begun Tuesday afternoon, although small marker flags along the property's perimeter indicated work is underway.
"While some of those improvements will be clearly visible to the public — such as the new anti-climb fence — many will not be," Paris wrote. He said Miller's report contained details about security operations that, if disclosed to the public, "would obviously risk jeopardizing the safety" of those the agency protects.

Vice President JD Vance reveals he has 'sacred time' with his family for a couple of hours every day

Vice President JD Vance revealed on Monday that he devotes a couple of hours every day to spending time with his wife and kids. "The thing that I try to do, and maybe this is like a good advice for, you know, husbands and fathers, is, I try to take a couple of hours every day and make them as sacred as possible," he said. "Yes, if like a war breaks out, then sometimes you have to cancel even the sacred time. But we've been pretty good about making sure that I have at least a couple of hours with my family every single day." Vance spoke with podcast host Katie Miller for an interview on her new podcast, "The Katie Miller Podcast." Miller is White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller's wife and a former adviser at DOGE. "And sometimes that means, you know, I'm on the phone until 3 a.m. or sometimes that means I'm back in the White House after I put the kids to bed. But just have that sacred time that you protect, that you tune out the phone, you tune out work, and you just focus on your wife and your kids. And that's - I think - that's worked very well for us," Vance added. Vance said that it was possible to carve out time for his family even in his current role. Miller also asked the vice president about his day-to-day routine. Miller's interview with Vance is the first conversation she released on her new podcast."We'll typically, you know, again, I try to have 6:00 to 8:00 be that time where we have dinner together and just hang out with the kids," he said. "Usually there's something going on from 8 to midnight. And if it's an easy night, you're done by 10:00. And if it's a tough night, you're done at 2:00." Vance told Miller he likes to make his kids breakfast as often as he can. "I actually like to make stuff as much as I can because, again, when you're vice president, you live in a bubble. I try to have as many of these rituals as possible that just remind the kids, 'I'm still your dad,'" he said. Miller's upcoming podcast guests include boxing legend Mike Tyson and former ESPN host Sage Steele. "We're going to do this once a week on Mondays to talk about lifestyle, what's going on, real honest conversations, none of the bulls---. With people from across the spectrum, whether that be politicians, business leaders, celebrities, musicians, artists, scientists, you name it, we're going to have it," she said last week after announcing her new venture.

Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley provisionally suspended for whereabouts violation

Sprinter Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended for an alleged anti-doping whereabouts violation. World champion in the 100m in 2022, Kerley won bronze over the distance at Paris 2024 but could face a two-year ban if the charge is upheld. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Tuesday that the 30-year-old had been charged and provisionally banned. The World Anti-Doping Code states an athlete cannot have a combined three missed three anti-doping tests or filing failures within a 12-month period. In a statement posted on social media, lawyers for Kerley said that their client intends to contest the allegation. '[Kerley] strongly believes that one or more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the doping control officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location," the statement added. Kerley won silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and has won two spring relay golds at the Worlds alongside his individual title. He was absent, however, from the US track and field trials for the Tokyo World Championships, writing on X, formerly Twitter, that he was taking time out. "The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles," Kerley said. "Thanks to all my supporters."

Macron slams disaster waiting to happen in Gaza, wants UN mission

Macron slams disaster waiting to happen in Gaza, wants UN mission PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday slammed Israel's plans to step up its military operation in Gaza as a disaster waiting to happen and proposed an international coalition under a United Nations mandate to stabilise Gaza. Last week, Israel's security cabinet approved a plan to take control of Gaza City, in a move that expanded its military operations in the shattered Palestinian territory and drew strong criticism at home and abroad. "The Israeli cabinet's announcement of an expansion of its operations in Gaza City and the Mawasi camps and for a re-occupation heralds a disaster of unprecedented gravity waiting to happen and of a drift towards a never-ending war," said Macron, in remarks sent by his office to reporters. "The Israeli hostages and the people of Gaza will continue to be the primary victims of this strategy," added Macron. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office did not immediately return a request for comment. Responding to international criticism in a press conference on Sunday, he said Israel is "applying force judiciously". By proposing a U.N.-mandated mission in Gaza, Macron is seeking to build on the momentum created by his recognition of a Palestinian state last month, which set off a domino of recognitions, with Britain and Canada following suit. Macron said the U.N. mission would be tasked with securing the Gaza Strip, protecting civilians and working in support of unspecified Palestinian governance. He said the U.N. Security Council should work on establishing the mission. "I have asked my teams to work on that with our partners without delay," he added. Solve the daily Crossword
