SEATTLE - Brazilian and South American champions Botafogo survived a late onslaught to beat MLS side Seattle Sounders 2-1 in their Group B opener of the Club World Cup at Lumen Field on Sunday.
First-half headers from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus gave the visitors a deserved lead but a second-half deflected effort from Cristian Roldan handed the hosts a lifeline.
Despite coming under late pressure, Botafogo held firm to secure the three points, with goalkeeper John making a brilliant save deep in added time to deny Seattle an equaliser.
Botafogo captain Marlon Freitas said it was not his side's best performance.
"The important thing here was the result, the effort, but we know we didn't play well,' he told TV Globo.
'We have to learn lessons, both individually and collectively. This win helps ease some of the anxiety, but we must improve against our next opponents because playing like this, the result might not be the same.'
Botafogo took control early on and Seattle keeper Stefan Frei was called into action to produce fine saves from Igor Jesus and Alex Telles.
However, he was powerless to stop Cunha's opener in the 27th minute. A clumsy foul by Nouhou on Artur near the edge of the box gave Telles the chance to deliver a pinpoint free kick, which 20-year-old Cunha headed home.
Igor Jesus doubled the lead just before halftime when Vitinho's long cross from the right found the 24-year-old and he outjumped the Seattle defence to direct a towering header into the bottom corner.
Ryan Kent missed a golden opportunity to pull a goal back for Seattle in the 55th minute but somehow missed from close range.
The Sounders were rewarded for their efforts in the 75th minute when Roldan's header deflected off Igor Jesus to wrongfoot John and nestle into the net.
The goal energised the hosts and they dominated the final stages but could not find the equaliser, with John's reflex save in added time preserving Botafogo's narrow victory.
Botafogo are second in Group B on goal difference, following Paris St Germain's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid earlier on Sunday. They next take on PSG while Seattle face Atletico on Thursday. REUTERS

Food poisoning throws Salernitana's relegation fight into turmoil
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Serie A - Juventus v Salernitana - Allianz Stadium, Turin, Italy - May 12, 2024 Salernitana players celebrate after Niccolo Pierozzi scores their first goal REUTERS/Massimo Pinca/File Photo Salernitana's fight for survival has veered into chaos, with a bout of food poisoning hospitalising much of the squad halfway through their relegation showdown with Sampdoria. The Serie B side, fighting to avoid dropping to Italy's third tier, have formally requested a postponement of Friday's second-leg match against Sampdoria as players and coaching staff remain too ill to train. The drama unfolded on the plane back to Salerno following Sunday's 2-0 loss in Genoa, with 21 players and staff struck down, a large part requiring hospitalisation upon disembarking. "We are truly shocked by what happened and by the series of events that risk jeopardising Salernitana's smooth and peaceful approach to the final and crucial minutes of the season," club CEO Maurizio Milan said in a statement. The mass sickness has left the southern Italian side in competitive limbo, with the team unable to prepare for a match that could determine their footballing future. After suffering the drop from Serie A last season, Salernitana now face the prospect of consecutive relegations if they cannot overturn their first-leg deficit. "Many players and staff, at the moment, are not even able to show up at the sports centre to resume training," Milan added. The club said it had already made informal contact with Serie B officials and received "general openness" to evaluating their postponement request. Salernitana have also called for an investigation into the "causes of this widespread and serious episode." With the return leg scheduled for Friday and the team already facing a two-goal deficit, the clock is ticking on both the players' recovery and league authorities' decision on whether to grant additional time. Four people handed suspended jail sentences over Vinicius Jr effigy
Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences by a Madrid Court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, Spain's LaLiga said in a statement on Monday. They were all involved in hanging a banner reading "Madrid hates Real" and an inflatable black effigy in a replica of the Brazilian's No. 20 shirt on a bridge before a Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid in January 2023. According to the ruling, one defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having distributed images of the act online. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, LaLiga and the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF). "The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months," the LaLiga statement said. The first defendant was fined 1,084 euros ($1,250) and the other three 720 euros, with additional punishments including a 1,000-meter restraining order from Vinicius, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching soccer stadiums during LaLiga or RFEF matches. They will all be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination in order for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended. There was no immediate confirmation from the court and no immediate reaction from Vinicius. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Norwegian athletics coach Ingebrigtsen avoids jail in high-profile family case
OSLO - A Norwegian court on Monday found athletics coach Gjert Ingebrigtsen guilty of one count of minor assault against his daughter, while acquitting him of all charges of physical and mental abuse against his twice Olympic champion son Jakob. Ingebrigtsen was sentenced to a 15-day suspended prison sentence and must pay compensation of 10,000 Norwegian crowns ($1,000) to his daughter for hitting her with a wet towel on one occasion. He will not have to serve time in jail. Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of two-and-a-half years in a trial that captivated the Nordic nation. Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who won gold medals in the 5,000 metres at the 2024 Paris Games and the 1,500 metres in Tokyo in 2021, described during the trial in March a childhood he said was marked by fear and manipulation, accusing his father of incidents of violence. Gjert Ingebrigtsen, 59, had pleaded not guilty in the case and denied the charges against him, telling the court he had been an overly protective father who had tried to help his ambitious children. Gjert Ingebrigtsen will not file an appeal, his lawyer John Christian Elden told Reuters. "He is relieved and hopes the matter will be resolved quickly," Elden said. Reuters was not able to reach a lawyer representing Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his sister. The Ingebrigtsen family became household names in 2016 when the TV show "Team Ingebrigtsen" aired for five seasons on national broadcaster NRK, showcasing the family training and balancing their ambitions with daily life. A long list of witnesses was called to testify at the nearly two-month long criminal trial, including many family members, officials from Norway's athletics federation and other athletes and staff who worked with Gjert Ingebrigtsen and his sons. The verdict remains subject to potential appeal by prosecutors. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
