Denny Hamlin to miss NASCAR's first international race after birth of son
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Denny Hamlin will miss NASCAR's first international race of the modern era to remain in North Carolina following the birth of his child.
Ryan Truex will replace him Sunday in Mexico City.
'See you guys in Pocono,' Hamlin posted on social media. 'We are happy to announce the birth of our son. Everyone is doing well. My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.'
Hamlin and fiancee Jordan Fish now have three children, two daughters and a son born Wednesday. Hamlin had been on baby watch the last 12 days as Fish went nearly two weeks past her predicted due date.
He had planned to get out of the car at Michigan last Sunday if she went into labor early in the race, but when the first stage passed with no word, he went on to score his third win of the season. The victory was the 57th of his career and made him the all-time winningest driver at Joe Gibbs Racing.
Through 15 races this season, Hamlin ranks third in the overall Cup Series standings.

Truex, younger brother of former JGR full-time driver Martin Truex Jr., is Gibbs' reserve driver. His last Cup Series start was in 2014 and he has 26 starts at NASCAR's top level.
Hamlin will need NASCAR to grant him a waiver to be eligible to compete in the playoffs for the Cup Series championship. NASCAR during the offseason tightened the rules for granting waivers, but said it would permit a driver skipping an event for the birth of a child.
The 44-year-old Hamlin will snap his streak of 406 consecutive starts. Hamlin last missed a race in 2014 at California Speedway because of an eye irritation.

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark's arrival and a major surge in viewers over the past year led to ION Television reaching a multiyear agreement on Friday to extend its broadcasting partnership with the WNBA. Rams sign veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries to a 1-year deal
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams signed veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries to a one-year deal on Friday. Humphries, a longtime starter for the NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals, will provide depth and insurance on the Rams' offensive line behind starting left tackle Alaric Jackson. Jackson agreed to a three-year, $57 million free agent deal to return to Los Angeles this spring, but the NFL Network reported this week that Jackson is dealing with a reoccurrence of the blood clots that ended his 2022 season. Humphries spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Cardinals, who drafted him in the first round in 2016. He started 98 games, mostly at left tackle, and was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2021. Humphries was out of the NFL last season while recovering from a torn knee ligament from 2023. He also missed much of the 2022 season with a back injury. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs last November, but injured his hamstring shortly afterward. He played only occasionally down the stretch into the postseason for the AFC champions, and he didn't play in the Super Bowl. Florida State SS Alex Lodise wins the Dick Howser Trophy as the top college player in the nation
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise has been named winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as the national player of the year, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Friday. Lodise is the third player in program history to win the Howser, joining J.D. Drew in 1997 and Buster Posey in 2008. The award has been presented annually since 1987 and is named after former FSU All-American and head coach Dick Howser. Lodise was named Atlantic Coast Conference player and defensive player of the year, and he also is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the nation and Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top shortstop. Lodise ranked among the national leaders with a .394 batting average, 17 home runs, 18 doubles, 68 RBIs and .705 slugging percentage. He committed only five errors on 216 fielding chances (.977) and was part of 34 double plays. The junior from Jacksonville, Florida, had at least one hit in 48 of his 58 games. He had 31 multi-hit games and 13 games with three or more hits.
