NCAA Coaching Carousel: Iowa Hires Drake Coach Ben McCollum
Ben McCollum, who won 31 games in his first and only season at Drake, has been named the head coach at the University of Iowa, as expected.
He replaces Fran McCaffery, who was fired earlier this month after 15 seasons.
In his lone season at Drake, McCollum guided the Bulldogs to a sweep of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles. It marked the first outright regular season championship achieved by Drake since the 2007-08 season and the third consecutive MVC Tournament championship for the Bulldogs.
Under his leadership, the Bulldogs earned a birth to the NCAA Tournament and achieved their first NCAA Tournament win since the 2021 First Four. Drake's win over the No. 6 seeded Missouri Tigers marked the first time the Bulldogs won a game in the round of 64, which propelled the Bulldogs into the round of 32 for the first time since 1971. Overall, McCollum and the Bulldogs finished the 2024-25 season a with a record of 31-4 and went 17-4 in MVC play, which also marked the most conference wins in program history.
'We are grateful to the student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fanbase that helped make this historic year possible,' Drake director of athletics Brian Hardin said in a statement. 'Certainly, we hoped for more than 12 months together with Coach McCollum, but Drake fans will always remember the feelings that were generated from this magical season. I wish Ben, Michelle, Peyton, Tate, and Grace well in Iowa City.'
McCollum, who was hired in April of 2024, was named MVC Coach of the Year this season, while leading his players to multiple MVC and national accolades.
Drake said it will 'begin an immediate national search for the next Drake men's basketball head coach.'

ATHENS, Ga. — Glenn Schumann says comparisons are not fair to Georgia teams of the past or present. Even so, the defensive coordinator isn't ducking the fact that the 2024 defense didn't meet the Georgia standard even while the Bulldogs won their third Southeastern Conference championship in the Kirby Smart era. Georgia's path to 11 wins, the SEC championship game victory over Texas and a spot in the College Football Playoff was filled with harrowing results by the defense. The defense produced three NFL first-round draft picks — Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker and Malaki Starks — despite giving up 41 points in a loss to Alabama and closing the regular season with a 44-42 win over Georgia Tech in eight overtimes. It's no coincidence that Georgia's back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022 were built on defense under Smart, a former defensive coach. Georgia led the SEC in points and yards allowed in three consecutive seasons, beginning with the 2021 team that led the nation with 10.20 points allowed per game. The proud tradition of strong defenses slipped in 2024 when the Bulldogs fell to eighth in the league with 20.57 points and 329 yards allowed per game. 'You start rationalizing stats, then you're just making excuses for a performance that wasn't up to our standard,' Schumann said. 'The number one thing we need to do better in run defense is tackle better. In fact, we did not tackle to our standard last year.' Georgia, No. 5 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll, carries high expectations, including on defense. The belief the 2025 defense can return to its lead role may be at least partly based on the championship standard of units led by such players as Travon Walker, Jordan Davis, Eric Stokes, Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith. 'Speaking of a defense, I think it really comes down to the little things,' said linebacker CJ Allen, expected to be a leader of the unit. 'Our whole theme and this message this whole offseason for the whole team has been fire, passion, energy. Playing with fire, passion, energy, being able to affect each other means a lot. Just coming out doing the little things.' Freshman defensive lineman Elijah Griffin, one of the top signees, has an opportunity to make an immediate impact. 'EG's doing great,' Schumann said. 'You always want to temper expectations on young players, but he has a maturity to him, a work ethic to him. He's obviously a big guy with a lot of athleticism. So we hope that Elijah's able to help us this year. ... He's had a good start to camp.' Linebacker Raylen Wilson and safety KJ Bolden are other leaders of the defense. Smart said he is watching the defensive line, led by junior tackle Christen Miller, as a key to the emphasis on stopping the run. 'We need him to be a playmaker,' Smart said of Miller. 'We need him to be disruptive. We talk about habit, we talk about quickness, speed, experience. He's our most experienced player. He has taken on this role of knowing the burden lies with him to set a standard for that group.' Smart said the goal of stopping the run 'starts with that group. I mean, it's everybody, but it really starts with the defensive line, and what kind of mentality that room has. And so far, he has approached that the right way.'

See where Tom Izzo landed in a newly released head coaches rankings list heading into next season Despite having one of his best seasons in the last five years, Tom Izzo is not considered a top 10 coach nationally by one popular college basketball social media account. College Basketball Report -- a popular social media account known for putting together rankings and other lists -- has released their list of top 50 coaches heading into the 2025-26 season. Izzo was obviously pretty high on the list, but not as high as some may have had the hall of famer. College Basketball Report has Izzo as the No. 12 coach nationally entering the season. Here's a list of the coaches ahead of him in the rankings: The list itself isn't bad -- in my opinion -- when you start to look at who all is ahead of Izzo in the rankings. The one thing I would nitpick on is having Scott Drew ahead of Izzo. Sure, Drew won a national championship in 2021, but other than that season, he hasn't led the Bears to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament since 2017. So if we are playing a comparison game, I find it hard to have Drew ahead of Izzo based on both recent success and overall success.
