Aging Djokovic out to turn back time in push for U.S. Open glory
The Serbian great remains in pursuit of an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title, but comes to Flushing Meadows without a single competitive singles match since his Wimbledon semifinal loss to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.
Skipping hard-court tune-ups in Toronto and Cincinnati, Djokovic has placed all his chips on New York in what many see as his last realistic shot at Grand Slam glory.

LA28 basketball to start two days before opening ceremony
Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin two days before the opening ceremony takes place on July 14, the sport's governing body FIBA said on Wednesday. "This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than 12:00 PM, enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters," FIBA said after a meeting of its Executive Committee. According to a preliminary version of the competition schedule released by organizers of the 2028 Olympics last month, the basketball medal matches will be held on July 29 and 30. The basketball competition will take place at the Inglewood Dome, with the United States looking to defend their men's and women's titles. The 3x3 basketball competition is scheduled to start after the opening ceremony. A number of other sports like cricket, soccer, handball, field hockey and rugby sevens are also scheduled to begin before the opening ceremony.

Tennis: Nishikori to miss U.S. Open because of back injury
NEW YORK - Japan's Kei Nishikori said Wednesday he will miss the U.S. Open tennis championships starting this weekend because of a back injury. "Hi fans, unfortunately I will not be ready for the U.S. Open yet," the former world No. 4 wrote in an X post. "I had an MRI taken of my back and it's not 100 percent healed yet. Working hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for the support." The 35-year-old, currently ranked 88th, has struggled with injuries in recent years. The year's last Grand Slam tournament begins Sunday. Nishikori lost to Tommy Paul in the second round of the Australian Open in January before sitting out the French Open and Wimbledon. He returned to the ATP Tour in early August at the Cincinnati Open but withdrew from a Challenger event in Sumter, South Carolina, the following week, with a shoulder injury.

Cowboys optimistic Micah Parsons will play Week 1 despite trade request
Dallas Cowboys first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer said he is confident Micah Parsons will take the field for a Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rumors have swirled since the beginning of the month when the All-Pro edge rusher requested a trade, stating on social media that "I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys." Both sides remain in a stalemate as Parsons continues a hold-in. He has sat out all training camp practices while seeking a long-term extension to make him one of the NFL's highest-paid defensive players. However, the four-time Pro Bowler has attended team meetings and walkthroughs. "The business side of it is going to take care of itself," Schottenheimer said Wednesday. "I think at the end of the day, we feel like Micah's going to be out there when we line up against Philadelphia here in 15 days or whatever it is. "I feel good about that, yeah." Parsons, 26, is under contract with a fifth-year option that would pay him $24 million in 2025. In 63 games over four seasons with Dallas, the superstar pass rusher has 256 tackles (63 for loss), 112 quarterback hits, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. He tallied 12 sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles in 13 games last year. The Cowboys must finalize roster cuts down to 53 players by Tuesday, and the status of Parsons will affect other moves ahead of the team's meeting with the Super Bowl champions. "I feel good that Micah's going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles," Schottenheimer said, smiling. "All those things will play into things."
