£18m Barnardo's donation is largest in its history
Children's charity Barnardo's has been handed £18m in the largest single donation it has yet received.
The "extraordinary" donation will be used to create 45 homes for the charity's Gap Homes programme, which supports young people leaving care by providing them with suitable accommodation.
A third of the homes will be built in Lincolnshire, Birmingham and Glasgow, with locations for the other 30 still to be finalised.
The donation has been made by the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust, which was set up following the death of the 1920s racing driver who helped shape the Aston Martin brand.
The trust has supported the charity for more than 60 years, particularly in North East Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire.
Barnardo's chief executive Lynn Perry said: "This extraordinary donation from the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust is monumental for Barnardo's.
"We believe it's the largest single gift in the charity's history and it's hard to express just how much of an impact that will have for so many young people."
John Richards, chair of trustees at the charitable trust, said: "Katherine Martin was a remarkable woman who believed in the power of philanthropy to change lives.
"This significant donation is testament to her enduring legacy."

Aston Martin has revealed its new Valkyrie LM hypercar, which is derived from its Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) counterpart competing in the world-famous race this weekend. The Valkyrie LM's 10 owners will enjoy the same 7-speed transmission and 6.5-liter V-12 engine in the LMH version, but this modified engine produces 697 hp compared to the race version's 670. Aston Martin is making the Valkyrie LM accessible to amateur drivers by removing race series-specific elements like added weight and FIA-regulation electronics in favor of a cockpit interface tailored for track day usage. The automaker also changed the Valkyrie LM's torque control to a friendlier open-loop configuration instead of closed-loop with fewer internal adjustments, removed torque sensors managing power delivery for less technological oversight, and altered the V-12 engine to accept standard fuel. Operating in rear-wheel drive, the one-seater Valkyrie LM features Pirelli tires, semi-automatic paddle shifters like the LMH version, and a double-wishbone front and rear suspension with pushrod-actuated torsion bar springs with adjustable side and central dampers. This race-derived suspension set-up optimizes track performance and adjustability, and the cockpit contains a custom carbon-fiber race seat with shoulder support and headrest padding. This multi-million dollar Aston Martin also has an FIA safety harness, fire suppression system, and steering wheel with an integrated display and shift lights. Aston Martin is ensuring the Valkyrie LM's 10 buyers get the most out of their purchase with its optional track day program launching in Q2 2026. The track day program ensures each car is set up and prepared as it should be, with assistance from professional engineers, allowing drivers to push the model's limits, which include top speeds exceeding 200 mph. Before hitting the track, the program has owners train on a simulator with driver coaching sessions. Each Valkyrie LM comes with a helmet, Head and Neck Safety (HANS) device, driver's suit and boots, molded earpieces, driver's gloves, and fireproof underwear. Drivers opting into the track day program will have Aston Martin store their Valkyrie LM, allowing them to simply fly in, race, and fly out. Adam Carter, Aston Martin's Head of Endurance Motorsport, said in a release: "It is important to emphasize that the Valkyrie LM is close to identical to the race car that is currently competing in WEC and IMSA, with only a few minor deviations to ensure it is a non-homologated variant and is accessible for customers to experience and enjoy. Valkyrie LM represents the most authentic Hypercar track experience that is now available." The Valkyrie LM distinguishes itself beyond its ability to resemble race car dynamics and low production count. While the 10 Valkyrie LM owners will be part of a small club, Aston Martin facilitates a community aspect within this exclusive group through its track day program. Customers participating in the program will enjoy a Q2 2026 hand-off event marking first drives, two fully supported track days in Q3 2026, and additional track runs at F1 circuits in Q4 2026. Former owner of well-known venue admits VAT fraud
The ex-owner of a restaurant, bar and wedding venue has pleaded guilty to evading VAT and deliberately defrauding HM Revenue and Customs. Jack McDaid, 67, who previously ran Casa Brighouse in West Yorkshire under the company Casa Events, was due to stand trial at Leeds Crown Court along with business partner Samuel Revy-Holmes, 35, and accountant Robert Brook, 47, but changed his plea on Tuesday before the start of a trial. His Honour Judge Simon Phillips KC told McDaid he would be sentenced at the end of the trial, which was expected to last about two weeks. Mr Revy-Holmes and Mr Brook have both denied conspiracy to evade VAT and cheating the public revenue and their trial began on Tuesday. McDaid, Mr Revy-Holmes and Mr Brook have all been granted conditional bail. At the start of the trial, jurors at Leeds Crown Court heard the business's turnover had been almost £10m during the period when the alleged offences took place between October 2011 and June 2018. However, from November 2013 until May 2018, a total of 19 VAT returns were submitted which all showed no sales had taken place and no goods had been purchased, meaning no VAT was due. At that time, McDaid, of Sandal Magna, Halifax, owned Casa Events, while Mr Revy-Holmes, of Upper Marsh, Halifax, was registered as a company director. Mr Brook, of Orchid Grove, Netherton, was director of Yorkshire Accountancy Services and worked as the accountant for Casa Events, Mr Russell told jurors. Prosecutor Brian Russell told the court all three men were "jointly responsible for ensuring the company's tax liabilities and obligations were met". However, they "knowingly and deliberately conspired together to commit the criminal act of evading VAT", Mr Russell said. The court heard that the alleged offences came to light when HM Revenue and Customs began investigating another of McDaid's companies, Castelite Developments, in September 2017. That investigation got under way after no VAT returns were made for the business, despite it being registered for a period of about three years, jurors were told. The trial continues. CarPlay Evolves with iOS 26: All the New Features Explained
According to Apple, its CarPlay feature is being used worldwide 600 million times a day (except in some American vehicles). It has evolved from being a bonus feature for vehicle-owning iPhone users into an essential feature for car drivers with updates to the system coming with every major iOS rollout. During its keynote at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in Cupertino, California, several updates were revealed for the newly minted iOS 26. An evolved version of the Apple CarPlay was also shown, and here's a brief breakdown of every crucial new feature, including the brand-new CarPlay Ultra. Chief among the Apple CarPlay updates that go with the iOS 26 is the system-wide refreshed visual design, featuring icons that adapt seamlessly to light and dark modes. Those who receive a call while on the road will see a compact display, allowing users to continue seeing screen content like navigation while taking calls. Apple also introduced Tapbacks for messages, which are instant emoji-style reactions to messages, presumably so the driver won't have to take their eyes off the road. Pinned conversations are also available for quick access while driving. Meanwhile, Apple also added widgets to CarPlay, which are designed to be quick, glanceable, and informative without distracting the driver. These widgets also employ live updates to help drivers stay informed of important activities (e.g., a friend's flight status), without losing focus on the tiller. These Apple CarPlay updates are expected to go live as soon as iOS 26 rolls out to users this fall. The tech company didn't disclose an exact date for the public launch of the new system, but a public beta is expected to roll out in July, according to reports. Apart from the generic Apple CarPlay, the company also reintroduced CarPlay Ultra, which was announced last month. The new system is touted as the "ultimate" CarPlay experience, offering a unified, consistent interface across all driver-facing screens in the vehicle. Customizable layout and design of dashboard information are among the key features of CarPlay Ultra, adding vehicle controls such as radio and climate settings directly within CarPlay. Apple said that this is just the beginning, as more features are coming for CarPlay Ultra. Aston Martin vehicles were the first to get the CarPlay Ultra upgrade, with the DBX and Vantage, among others, getting first dibs on the feature. The tech giant said that it is collaborating with multiple auto brands to bring CarPlay Ultra to more cars, with the Hyundai Group reportedly next in line.
